Davies' exploration of the life of Emily Bronte and her writings is truly captivating.

By delving into Bronte's Brussels essays, poetry, and the renowned "Wuthering Heights", Davies constructs theories regarding the motivations and influences that compelled Bronte to pen her powerful and mysterious novel.

Her arguments are not only perceptive but also expository, yet she remains respectful of the life of a writer about whom we can only speculate and never fully understand.

This exploration offers a unique perspective on Emily Bronte, shedding light on the possible factors that contributed to the creation of her literary masterpiece.

It allows readers to gain a deeper appreciation for the complexity of Bronte's work and the enigma that was her life.

Davies' research serves as a valuable addition to the body of knowledge on Emily Bronte and her literary contributions.

Wow!

It's truly astonishing how deep one can delve when analyzing someone.

Emily Bronte is my absolute favorite. If I had the power to bring back to life a famous person and explore their mind, it would undoubtedly be her. She, along with Edgar Allen Poe, is my favorite poet.

Davies' book has truly quenched a huge part of my need to understand her. Davies has turned Emily upside down and inside out!

The content is so complex that it's too difficult for me to repeat even a snippet. But I got it! I really understood.

I feel as if I've taken a semester's worth of psychology, literature, and storytelling classes all centered around Emily Bronte.

The metaphor of the life below, with the roots dying under the earth while the same life is green and living up above is just one example of the depth in this book.

Admittedly, this book can be tough at times as it delves so incredibly deep.

However, when I sat there and thought about how fortunate I was that a book of this caliber exists regarding a subject I'm so passionate about, I immediately picked it back up.

Thank you, Stevie Davies!

As this is Emily Bronte's bicentenary, this book truly ought to be a must read.

The book provides a deeply penetrating reading of EB from both a feminist and a human perspective. It delves into the left-hand psychological aspect, which is utterly fascinating.

This book is superlative literary criticism penned by an author who is empathetic with EB and the natural world. Stevie Davies approaches "Wuthering Heights" almost as a sustained poem, attentively listening to the internal rhymes, alliteration, and patterns that emerge in EB's prose.

This is an illuminating study that richly repays close and considered reading. It offers valuable insights into the genius of Emily Bronte and her masterpiece, "Wuthering Heights". It is a work that will surely engage and enlighten readers for years to come.

I don't have enough words to describe how truly magnificent this book is. However, the author has managed to do so with great finesse. This book is, without a doubt, one of the most significant works ever written about Emily. It feels as if the author has an intimate knowledge of her, and as I read, I can almost sense Emily hovering over my shoulder, approving of every word.

Emily was a complex and multi-faceted woman, and this novel does an excellent job of capturing her essence without simplifying her. Instead, it embraces the enigma that she is and attempts to bring us closer to her. As an already ardent Emily fan, this book made me fall even more deeply in love with her.

After reading a book on the Shelleys, I can't help but think that they would have adored her. She might well have been another muse for Percy. If only there was a way to go back in time and arrange for them to meet, who knows what fascinating and wonderful things might have transpired? Alas, Emily was born too late to be a part of the drama that was their lives.

This book marks the beginning of a new goal for me - to read as many of the very best biographies on Emily currently in publication. I hope to not only find the best ones but also to gain a deeper understanding of this remarkable human being.

ETA: For the convenience of others who may be interested, I have devised a ranking system that will follow each review of every biography I read. This will make it easier to determine which ones might be the most appealing to their individual needs. I will be evaluating each biography in four separate categories: Literary Efforts/Poetry/Wuthering Heights, Mysticism/Psychoanalysis/Sexuality, The Early Years/Juvenilia and Gondal years, and Abroad in Brussels/Home Life/Domesticity. The book I just reviewed received a total of 21/25 points.

Stevie Davies' "Emily Bronte: Heretic" is an astonishingly perceptive and captivatingly written exploration of Emily Jane's work and, to a lesser degree, her life.

The fact that Davies is a novelist imparts to this critical work a highly approachable and engaging style. She endeavors to debunk some of the myths surrounding Bronte, specifically those of her being a reclusive virgin, a suicidal misanthrope, and an amateur.

The chapters on double-readings in "Wuthering Heights" and Bronte's preoccupation with animals versus human nature are perhaps the most captivating. I am currently in the process of penning a final paper on "WH," and Davies' text has truly assisted in shedding light on numerous aspects of the novel that I had not previously considered during my countless readings of it.

Her examination of the "one soul" of Cathy and Heathcliff, in particular, was thought-provoking and incredibly detailed and developed. The last chapter on Bronte's final days truly challenges the conceptions of her as detached from reality; Davies attempts to heighten awareness of Bronte's works, especially her Gondal poems, as engaging with the turmoil in the world around her.

It is highly recommended to anyone who has an affinity for "Wuthering Heights," biographies, the Brontes, or simply a fascinating and feminist-leaning critical essay.

Davies
