Here I am, at the age of 27, and finally delving into the works of Maya Angelou.

Surprisingly, I never had the opportunity to read her during my school days, and somehow, I overlooked "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" every time it caught my eye on the library shelves.

Well, as they say, better late than never, right?

"And Still I Rise" is Angelou's third poetry collection, first published in 1978.

Given the immense praise she has received, I was rather taken aback when I wasn't completely overwhelmed by this collection.

To be fair, I did like it, but there was just something that seemed to be lacking.

I can't quite put my finger on what it is exactly.

There were several poems that I truly enjoyed, such as "Men," "Refusal," "The Lesson," "The Singer Will Not Sing," "Still I Rise," and "In Retrospect."

These poems had a consistent undercurrent of history, truth, and encouragement, along with a critical yet uplifting perspective on womanhood and African American life.

However, for all these wonderful poems, there was an equal number that simply didn't resonate with me.

Perhaps I went into it with overly high expectations, which is admittedly a bit foolish since I had never read any of Angelou's work before this.

These works are simple, but simplicity can be powerful.

Nevertheless, some of these poems just didn't quite hit the mark for me.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still eager to read more of Angelou's work.

I'm hoping that her other pieces will have a greater impact on me than this collection did.

I almost always enjoy books read by the author, and this was no exception. It was truly special how she infused so much of her personality into the tonality and rhythm of her reading.

My two favorite poems from the book were "Still I Rise" and "Life Doesn't Frighten Me." They both embody the courage and strength she must have possessed to thrive in her arduous life.

"Still I Rise" is about her defiantly "rising up" in the face of her oppressors. No matter how strenuously they attempt to keep her down, she always prevails and rises above, much to their chagrin. Her laughter at the oppressors' anger in this reading is palpable and genuine. They simply cannot bear to witness someone so unyielding.

"Life Doesn't Frighten Me" is dedicated to children who refuse to admit they are frightened, but I firmly believe it could inspire people of all ages to find the courage within themselves to confront fear.

All the poems in this volume convey a message of hope in the midst of difficult times. The slaves endured and persevered so that she could have a better life, and she, in turn, does the same for future generations.

Her words are a powerful testament to the human spirit's ability to overcome adversity and shine brightly.
