Raised by the hunters who discovered her, Atalanta grew up to be an extraordinary being. She could run like the wind and her skills with the bow and arrow were such that she could hit any target with precision.

When she reached the age of sixteen, her cruel father, a king, summoned her back to his palace. There, he demanded that she marry and produce an heir. But Atalanta, having made a vow of chastity to Artemis, was afraid to betray it. Instead, she told her father that she would only marry the man who could defeat her in a race. The losers, however, would face the harsh penalty of death.

Many suitors came forward, eager to win Atalanta's hand, but all of them failed. That is, until the handsome Hippomenes arrived to compete. Suddenly, Atalanta found herself no longer certain that she wanted to win.

I absolutely loved this retelling. Atalanta was portrayed as a strong and independent character, which I really admired. The verbal sparring between Artemis and Apollo added a touch of humor to the story and made me chuckle. Additionally, the element with the lions was something new and unexpected. I have read several versions of this tale before, but I had never come across that particular twist. It really made this retelling stand out and kept me engaged from start to finish.
