Roses Are Red...yet another nursery rhyme title given to a book in the Patterson Alex Cross series. And what a puzzling rhyme it is indeed. After reading this, my sixth Alex Cross book, a distinct pattern has clearly emerged in this series. There are brutal and graphic depictions of murders and crime scenes, numerous red herrings that lead the reader astray, and finally, the capture of "a villain," but not "the villain" - the one who manages to elude Cross time and time again, causing him great pain. And then there are the doomed love interests. Sigh. Roses Are Red covers a rough patch in Cross's life, to say the least. However, his unwavering devotion to capturing the bad guys never falters. He never quits, not even when it comes at a great personal cost. This is yet another high-action, bloody, and crime-ridden novel, as I suspect they all are. Yes, it's all-consuming and extremely difficult to put down. I will definitely continue with the series.

I can't wait to see what other twists and turns Patterson has in store for Alex Cross and his readers. The combination of intense crime-solving and Cross's personal struggles makes for a captivating read that keeps you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end.

Amy and I chanced upon this book by the curb in a town in Germany. On a whim, we picked it up. After reading the first chapter, which consisted of about 4 pages and perhaps 1000 words or maybe even less, we both put it down. The start was unbelievably unpromising. And there it sat, taunting me from a shelf in our apartment for approximately a month. Yesterday at 4 pm, I finally picked it up again. Four hours later, I was done with it. After 130 chapters of absent character development, a random and generic plot, and the regular use of italics to DRAW INTEREST OF THE READER TO CRITICAL STUFF (!!), I'm looking forward to casting this book far, far away from my life.

Now, having said that, around page 100, this book reached a point where it was so bad that it actually became good. If you're in the mood to recall why you read books that are periodically emotionally exasperating or obtuse, this one would offer a few years' worth of context. It's a strange phenomenon really, how a book can be so terrible in so many aspects and yet, at a certain point, manage to turn into something almost enjoyable in its awfulness. It makes you question your own standards and what you're willing to put up with in a story.

I simply cannot put into words just how much I loathed this book. It was completely uninteresting from start to finish. The main character failed to capture my attention or evoke any sense of appeal. Moreover, the writing was truly abysmal. The story ended on a cliffhanger, but quite frankly, I couldn't care less about obtaining the next book to discover the conclusion of the tale. This happens to be the very first James Patterson book that I have read, and it will most definitely be the last.

Roses are Red by James Patterson is an extremely exciting mystery. It is led by D.C.’s top detective, Alex Cross. A group of professional bank robbers and their leader, “The Mastermind,” plan and carry out perfect robberies. At the same time, they commit malicious murders of “innocent” people.

Cross’s life is a complete mess throughout the book. He has to deal with family problems while trying to stop the craziest psychopath he has ever seen. This book is not just a great read. It also shows the significance of family life and how quickly someone can be on the verge of dying. It makes you realize how much you should cherish life and enjoy every single minute of it.

James Patterson is an exciting author. His writing style makes reading feel like a movie playing in your head. His easy-to-read style and his suspenseful scenes make you feel as if you’re following the book through a video camera. For example, “He dived off the deck - which was five floors above the street” and “Francis had made a dive five stories down to a shimmery blue swimming pool” (Page 362). He vividly draws pictures in your head, from crazy murderers to his valued family situations.

I could never put this book down because from chapter to chapter, I couldn’t predict what was going to happen next. However, the only downside to this book was that sometimes I felt like the characters did things that put them in danger and could have been easily avoided if they had used common sense.

If you’re a Law and Order or CSI crime lover, then this book is definitely for you. It doesn’t matter whether you’re fourteen or fifty. Patterson writes in a way that anyone can enjoy it as long as you love a good mystery. So if you are an action junkie who loves unpredictable twists and turns, then Roses are Red is without a doubt a great book for you. I would give it 5 stars out of five. This book is an absolute thriller and a roller coaster ride right up to the end.
