After just completing my first reading of Ulysses, I feel compelled to add my voice to the chorus of appreciation for Blamires's guide on Goodreads. MJ described it as indispensable in his review, and I wholeheartedly concur with his assessment.
Blamires offers short, exquisitely written overviews of each episode. However, these overviews are not mere summaries. Although his summaries are indeed indispensable in certain passages and episodes that might otherwise prove difficult to follow. Instead, Blamires also delves into various approaches to interpreting Ulysses. He points out themes and motifs that recur throughout the novel, gently guiding the reader to start appreciating the intricate web of connections that Joyce weaves.
I have likened Blamires's The New Bloomsday Book to the synopses of operas in playbills. He gives a sense of the action and highlights some crucial elements to consider while reading Ulysses. Yet, he does so in a manner that allows readers to respond to Ulysses in their own unique ways. It is an extremely challenging balancing act, one that he accomplishes with absolute perfection.
