Had it not been for this, I would not have been able to finish reading James Joyce's masterpiece, Ulysses.

Ulysses is the kind of book that seems insurmountable for most people.

They hear it's good, buy it, attempt to read a few pages, then give up, but still display it on their shelves like a trophy, never to be read again.

For an ordinary reader like me, without in-depth formal training in literature, I believe the only way to avoid this is to have Blamires' guide book.

Blamires wrote a caveat in his introduction, stating that "it would be foolish to pretend that my view of Ulysses is exactly the same as the next man's."

This cannot be emphasized enough.

James Joyce is a genius who wrote a book to puzzle generations.

Doris Lessing, in her introduction to her equally brilliant The Golden Notebook, said that the more interpretations a reader can give to a novel, the better it is.

She almost detested fictions that could not be read in another way, deeming them mediocre.

I believed her, and this statement was what I kept in mind while reading Ulysses.

I also noticed that Blamires used Homer's characters as chapter titles in his book.

Perhaps this did not originate from him, but it greatly helped me appreciate Ulysses more.

It gave the book a better structure, and Blamires even introduced each chapter by providing the Homeric parallelisms.

I am still yet to read Homer's works.

These books, Ulysses and this guide, have made me more interested in Homer, so I have now included his two works in my to-be-read list for this year.

Will it help to read Homer's Odyssey first before tackling Ulysses?

My answer is no, but it will be beneficial.

The reason for the no is that if you use this Blamires book, everything will be explained to you.

Also, Joyce made heavy references to Shakespeare's works such as Hamlet, Macbeth, As You Like It, etc.; his own works like A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and some of his short stories in Dubliners; Chaucer's tales in Canterbury such as The Wife of Bath and The Prioress' Tale; and of course, the Holy Bible.

So, if you want to read Ulysses and have to read all of these first, it will take you forever to be fully prepared.
