Excellent book!

The context is interesting as it was written 50 years ago. Since then, society has changed significantly, perhaps even declined in some aspects.

The author, being British, sometimes focuses too much on the then-current events and situations. For example, he delves into their educational system or how church leaders were chosen in his denomination.

However, overall, the book is very good and different from anything else I've read. I would love to hear his perspective on what we could do today.

It leans more towards social commentary rather than providing a step-by-step guide on how to fix things. But understanding how we got here is often the first step in finding solutions.

My dad had the foresight to give me this remarkable book nearly 48 years ago. It was printed in 1963, and at that time, I was just 12 years old in 1966. I believe my dad thought that all 12-year-olds needed to have their minds activated, and he was absolutely right! I have read this book countless times, and in every season of my life, I still discover a newfound freshness within its pages.

My dad didn't stop there. He also gave me other wonderful books, such as J.B. Phillips - N.T. & Plain Christianity, The Hobbit, and C.S. Lewis' Screwtape Letters & The Great Divorce. With these books, my long journey into life was launched, although there were a few stops along the way.

This particular book is truly wonderful. I use it in every course I teach at CCU, along with others. It is a "Thinking Christianly" book that you simply must not miss. I encourage you to read all four listed below and then the rest, if you know what's best for you. You might just start, yes, Thinking Christianly!!

Devil's Hunting Ground (1954, 1st novel of trilogy)
Blessing Unbounded: A Vision (1955)
Cold War in Hell (1955, 2nd novel of trilogy)
Highway to Heaven (1955, 3rd novel of trilogy)
Book 1 The Christian Mind ISBN 1-57383-323-1
Where Do We Stand
Book 2 The Post-Christian Mind
Book 3 On Christian Truth
These two are for those who can read and really want to - The Bloomsday Book (A guide through Joyce's Ulysses - Word Unheard (A guide through Eliot's Four Quartets)
The Will and the Way (A Study of Divine Providence and Vocation) (1957)
The Tyranny of Time: A Defence of Dogmatism (1965)
Book 4 - Recovering the Christian Mind: Meeting the Challenge of Secularism (1988)

This book, which was written in the early 1960s, delves into the crucial topic of how to approach secular subjects from a Christian perspective.

The author places great emphasis on the significance of the eternal perspective and the reality of evil in the formation of the Christian mind.

In many respects, the book is prophetic. Blamires explores social problems that were perhaps just emerging in their infancy during the early 60s but have since ballooned to epic proportions over the years.

I discovered that many of the specific issues he raised were both interesting and highly thought-provoking. Additionally, I believe that he held some views that differed from what the majority of Christians might hold today, particularly regarding issues related to the natural environment and the development of city life. However, he presented a robust Christian foundation for his ideas, which added depth and credibility to his arguments.

This book serves as a valuable resource for those seeking to understand how to integrate their Christian faith with the complex and ever-changing secular world.

This, however, is something of a digression.

This quote, which is found in the middle of The Christian Mind, sums up a significant aspect of the book. Blamires has a tendency to digress from the main topic on numerous occasions. He uses these digressions to share his thoughts and ideas on how specific areas of life could potentially be transformed to better reflect a Christian mind.

Nonetheless, I have an absolute love for this book. It offers some truly wonderful and profound insights into the art of thinking in a manner that brings glory to God. The book delves deep into the subject matter, providing readers with valuable perspectives and practical guidance.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in exploring the intersection of faith and daily life. It has the potential to inspire and challenge readers to think more deeply about their beliefs and how they can live out those beliefs in a meaningful way.

CCS Spring 2023 All-Staff Yearly Reading - pg. 175

"A Living Christian... transcend."

In the CCS Spring 2023 All-Staff Yearly Reading, on page 175, the concept of "A Living Christian... transcend" is presented. This idea emphasizes the importance of being a truly alive and active Christian. A living Christian is not just someone who adheres to the outward forms of religion but one who truly embodies the teachings of Christ in their daily lives.

To transcend means to go beyond the ordinary, to rise above the limitations of this world and reach for a higher spiritual plane. It is about having a deep and abiding faith that enables us to overcome the challenges and difficulties we face. A living Christian who transcends is constantly growing and evolving in their faith, seeking to know God more deeply and to serve others with love and compassion.

This concept challenges us to examine our own lives and ask ourselves if we are truly living as Christians who transcend. Are we allowing our faith to transform us from the inside out? Are we actively seeking to make a difference in the world around us? By reflecting on these questions, we can strive to become the kind of living Christians who truly transcend.

It's about the mind, so prepare for deep thinking.

The mind is an incredibly complex and mysterious entity. It is the seat of our thoughts, emotions, and consciousness. It shapes our perception of the world and influences our actions and decisions. To truly understand the mind, one must be willing to engage in deep thinking and exploration. This requires us to look beyond the surface and delve into the inner workings of our own minds. We must question our assumptions, beliefs, and values, and be open to new ideas and perspectives. By doing so, we can gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us.

Deep thinking about the mind can also lead to personal growth and transformation. It can help us to identify and overcome our limitations, and to develop our full potential. It can also enhance our creativity, intuition, and problem-solving abilities. So, if you're ready to embark on a journey of self-discovery and intellectual exploration, then prepare for deep thinking about the mind.

First off, Blamires presents a compelling argument in his 1963 book. He contends that "as a thinking being, the modern Christian has fallen prey to secularization."

The Christian may embrace religion in terms of its morality, worship, and spiritual culture, but rejects the religious perspective on life. This perspective situates all earthly matters within the context of the eternal, relates all human problems - social, political, and cultural - to the doctrinal underpinnings of the Christian Faith, and views all things in terms of God's sovereignty and the transience of the earth, as well as Heaven and Hell.

The Christian has surrendered the entire intellectual battlefield to secular assumptions and methods of argumentation. In fact, Blamires challenges the reader to think "christianly" on any issue, free from preconceived biases or political stances, and then engage in debate with fellow Christians. It quickly becomes evident how isolated this position is. No one communicates in this manner. In fact, conceding ground can seem perilous as it might advantage a political adversary. Christians must "reaffirm the status of objective truth as distinct from personal opinion." Only then can we hope to regain "the Christian mind - a mind trained, informed, and equipped to handle the data of secular controversy within a framework of reference constructed from Christian presuppositions."

The Christian Mind thinks supernaturally, is cognizant of evil and firmly rooted in the truth; it accepts authority and is centered on humanity; it views all things as sacramental. Sadly, this type of thinking is severely limited today. Even highly intelligent Christians can default to secular thinking with the belief that "no one will accept arguments based on theology." While there is some truth to this view, it is unacceptable. If we are unable to offer the world a Christian way of thinking about the issues confronting society, we risk becoming just another discordant note in a very cacophonous world.

I found the book to be thought-provoking. Other reviewers have criticized Blamires for his dogmatism. I suppose he is dogmatic, but that is precisely his point. Christians have yielded too much ground. I am confident that he would be willing to engage with his critics if they approached the discussion from a christianly perspective.

Pretty insightful book on how Christians ought to think as Christians into every aspect of life.

This book, although "old," has a very good application to this day.

The church in England had failed to cultivate Christian thinking. It allowed secularism to be the one and only voice speaking about various subjects. In these areas, the Christian, with his unique worldview, should have been able to speak more clearly and truthfully.

However, due to the church's negligence, secularism dominated.

This work should serve as an important reminder for modern-day churches in America.

They need to learn from the mistakes of others and not repeat the same errors.

By doing so, they can better cultivate Christian thinking among their members and have a more significant impact on society.

In conclusion, this book offers valuable lessons that are still relevant today.
