All in all, this book is not very well-written. In fact, it's mostly a dreary read. However, within all the fluff, it contains an interesting review of many of Castaneda's magic concepts such as intent, the assemblage point, spirit, stalking, not-doing, and more. There are also some cool bits about poetry and storytelling as a means to reveal the workings of magic. Whether the information in this book holds any practical value remains to be seen.

Carlos Castaneda portrays a rather misanthropic and psychopathic image of the "warrior" or sorcerer. By now, the man of knowledge has become a person without compassion, who masks that lack, manipulates others through "stalking", severs ties with his family, and has no altruistic values. He only desires to be in touch with an abstract Spirit, increase his "power", have interesting mental experiences, and escape death. Warriors or sorcerers apparently have no genuine love relationships and contribute nothing to the community. They only seek freedom of perception for themselves and their sorcery disciples.

The book was published in 1987 and supposedly covers the time Castaneda spent with his Yaqui Indian teacher Don Juan between 1960 and 1973. It's interesting to note that only in book 5 did Castaneda discuss what happened after Don Juan's departure from earth, and not in any of the later books. In book 6, he came up with a new idea that allowed him to go back to Don Juan as the instructor.

The content of "The power of silence" continues the path set out in book 7. It focuses on the idea of shifting the assemblage point, which is described as a point in the energetic field of a human being. The book also expands on "stalking" and revisits terms like "stopping the world" and "the art of non-doing". However, the book is a cumbersome read due to all the fluff about the interactions between guru Don Juan and his pupil, which is mechanical, uninspired, repetitive, and redundant.

The theory in book 8 centers around the assemblage point and how it can be shifted to access other parts of reality. The book also delves into the concept of "intent", which is a force similar to Schopenhauer's "will" and is closely linked to destiny and life purpose. According to Castaneda, human history has seen two basic positions of the assemblage point, and he introduces a "third" position for the magician.

Some of the ideas in the book may be interesting, but others are rather silly, such as sorcerers using the "shine" in their eyes to beckon intent. Overall, the book is a complex and often confusing exploration of Castaneda's magical theories.

This is a truly great book.
