This work is nowhere near as good as "Journey to Ixtlan". It fails to convince the reader on many levels.

The story lacks depth and authenticity. The characters seem one-dimensional and the plot feels forced.

There is no real connection established between the reader and the events unfolding. The writing style is平淡无奇 and does not draw the reader in.

Compared to the masterpiece "Journey to Ixtlan", this work pales in comparison. It does not have the same power to move, inspire, or make the reader think.

Overall, it is a disappointment and fails to live up to the standards set by other great works in the genre.

Perhaps with more effort and a deeper understanding of the subject matter, the author could have created a more engaging and convincing piece.

As it stands, it is simply not good enough and fails to leave a lasting impression.

Enter Dona Soledad, La Gorda, Josefina, Lidia and Rosa. This is the first time that these'sisters' and Pablito's mother have had a significant presence in the series. Having been mentored by Don Juan and Genaro, they, along with Pablito, Nestor and Benigno (The Genaros), are all now prepared to take things to an entirely new level with Carlos.

Carlos has had time to reflect on his teachings from Don Juan and read through his copious notes taken during his time with him. Now, he is ready to take a leap of faith, not only into the abyss from the mountain top but also with his own mind, his perception of the world, and the thought processes he uses to make sense of everything that occurs to others and himself.

Meeting Dona Soledad for the second time, he is astonished by her appearance and the look in her eyes. She has utilized the powers of sorcery and the directions of the wind to transform herself. I would love to share this transformation with you now, but for the sake of those who have not read the book, all I can say is that once we see the way others view us and use the power of nature to heal ourselves, amazing things can unfold. Not to mention that if this book were more mainstream, the current weight watchers and slimmers world programs would surely face some competition (from the more open-minded individuals among us, that is!).

This is the essence of Carlos' books. One must be open-minded and willing to empty their mind of the things they already believe to be true. This is precisely why Carlos has had so many difficulties understanding the world of sorcery. He simply couldn't let go of the barriers he had erected in his mind, as we all do, towards things we cannot fathom. We must release our fears, prejudices, and opinions, and once we let go and start from nothing, anything becomes possible.

In this book, we learn about the 'direction' he faces and its impact on his life and future, the winds and how they govern the sense of being. We revisit luminosity and being whole, impeccability as a person and as a warrior. We gain more insights into the night when Carlos, Pablito, Benigno, and Nestor all jumped into the abyss from the top of the mountain, the effects it had on them, and their journey into the deeper world of sorcery.

With an introduction on how each of the sisters, Dona Soledad, and the Genaros met Don Juan and Genaro, and the way they were drawn into the world of sorcery, it becomes easier to envision them, making them more engaging. Before, they were just names. This book combines so many of the elements previously touched upon and makes understanding the process more believable. La Gorda's explanations of Don Juan's teachings not only assist Carlos in understanding things more clearly but also help the reader better understand the teachings. This is obviously the intention of the book and an important part of Carlos' journey. Having had so many things become clearer, it aids Carlos in making a choice about whether he will continue along the path of a warrior, an impeccable warrior, or turn his back on this life for good.

The experiences he has with the females in the group throughout this book, especially the final one, would make most people flee screaming. So, I find it remarkable that Carlos decided to stay. But will he stay and complete his journey? Will he 'complete' himself? I don't know, but I can't wait to read the next 'chapter' in this remarkable journey to find out!

This installment in the series is by far the worst. It really isn't very good at all.

There are numerous aspects that contribute to its lackluster performance. The story seems disjointed and fails to engage the reader on a deeper level. The characters lack development, making it difficult to form any emotional connection with them.

The writing style is also rather平淡, lacking the excitement and vividness that would have made the reading experience more enjoyable. It feels as if the author didn't put in as much effort as they should have.

Overall, this is a disappointment and leaves a lot to be desired. It's a shame that this particular entry in the series has fallen so short. One can only hope that future installments will be an improvement and bring back the magic that made the series initially appealing.

This book may not be the best in the series, but it is an essential one within the universe of Carlos Castaneda.

It offers unique insights and perspectives that contribute to a deeper understanding of the overall body of work.

While it may not possess all the qualities that make some of the other books in the series stand out, it still holds its own value.

The ideas and concepts presented in this particular volume can enhance the reader's appreciation and knowledge of the complex and fascinating world that Castaneda has created.

It serves as a necessary piece of the puzzle, filling in gaps and adding depth to the overall narrative.

Without this book, the complete picture of Castaneda's universe would be incomplete.

It is a worthwhile read for both fans of the series and those who are new to the works of Carlos Castaneda.

In the first four Castaneda books, women had a minimal role, with only a silly skirmish involving "La Catalina". However, in book four (Tales of Power), Castaneda seems to recognize this omission when he comments on the possibility of female "warriors". It appears that he wanted to make amends. This book is filled with women, who essentially form Castaneda's harem. There is a significant amount of sexual tension, which is very different from the first four books. The book also takes a darker turn: there are several actual murder attempts by the women on Castaneda, which I believe reflects his attitude towards and fear of women.

In the first four books, everything revolved around learning from nature: water spirits, mist spirits, power in the wind, power animals, power plants, etc. Now, it suddenly becomes all about power struggles between people, who must steal each other's power by killing one another. The book gets truly dark here: all people are apparently parasites or predators. We are supposed to believe that having children creates an irreparable dark hole within you; if you want to be a warrior and sorcerer, you must cut yourself off from your children, abandon your attachment to them, and steal back the power they have taken from you by being born, thereby condemning them to a life of civilian mediocrity as they now lack the magical power to become a sorcerer. Yes, this is precisely what Castaneda teaches.

In the first four books, Castaneda repeatedly emphasized the extreme danger of receiving power from the wind, allowing your attention to drift away with the water, etc. But here, the fighting becomes real, with the women attempting to kill Castaneda several times before ultimately joining forces with him. Interestingly, there is no actual sex. The women frequently lift their skirts to show what they have, they often lie in beds with Castaneda, they embrace in a foursome or even nibble on his side or face, but somehow it never leads to real sexual intercourse.

It all sounds very much like an allegory of Castaneda's own life. The first woman, Soledad, which means loneliness, could represent the loneliness he experienced in the early years of his success. He became a recluse and then surrounded himself with four female admirers. He tried to have a woman for each wind direction: south, east, west, north, just as in the book.

La Gorda, the leading girl, essentially replaces Don Juan, who has vanished into the "nagual", the land of magic behind ordinary reality or Imagination Land. La Gorda follows an endless number of instructions given by Don Juan before he left. It goes on and on, and it's quite astonishing how detailed Don Juan's instructions to La Gorda must have been.

Apart from the violence and sexual suggestions, Castaneda continues to do what he did before: rehashing the teachings, changing them, and adding new elements on the fly, essentially rewriting his textbook of Mexican sorcery again and again. He retrospectively attributes countless new teachings to Don Juan, "remembers" things about Don Juan that he never mentioned before, abandons earlier ideas, and introduces new ones as his fancy dictates. I think the concept of what constitutes an "ally" has changed at least three times in the book series so far. In addition to "looking" and "seeing", he now adds "gazing", which was never previously mentioned but now becomes very important, an aid and extension to "dreaming". Gazing begins with looking at piles of dry leaves for four years, but of course, it can also be learned in an hour-long session. Also, Castaneda introduces the concept of "stalking", here described as focusing all your attention on your own shortcomings until they disintegrate. (In the later books, stalking evolves to be more about getting what you want by wearing a mask and tricking people). The complete technique is not fully explained in this book. Many of the additions, little rules, tricks, and things that suddenly have to be done (such as putting a stick on your forehead and turning three times! Be careful, or you may die! Oo, there comes the nagual out of your nose!) sound completely arbitrary to me. What I like less and less is the insistence that everything a man-of-knowledge/sorcerer/warrior/nagual does is mortally dangerous, the idea that everything in life is a fight, the sectarian notion that you must break all your former relationships, the idea that you must break the bond with your children and steal their power back, etc. It's cute to read about girls running across walls or hiding their entire bodies behind their hands, but it's also a bit like reading a children's book. Castaneda knew his writing, but his world-view comes across to me as hostile and demeaning, Darwinistic and reductionistic. The sorcerers who fight each other to the death are supposedly a superrace, and the rest of humanity is irrelevant. Warriors should not feel compassion, and people cannot help each other, which is what this book teaches. It all suits a man who chose to live in total isolation for the last 20 years of his life.

In this book, it is mentioned for the first time that true sorcerers do not die; they simply disappear into the Nagual. Castaneda died of liver cancer in his bed. He had definitely had some magic in his hands, but mostly in his writing.

Castaneda, a graduate student majoring in Anthropology, was conducting research for his thesis on Mexican Shaman and their utilization of regional plants and herbs to produce psychotropic effects with the aim of curing various illnesses. He initially adopted a scientific perspective, being a skeptic. However, what occurred to him later completely astonished him and became his lifelong pursuit. If you intend to read these books, it is advisable to begin with "The Yaqui Way of Life", which is the first volume. Prepare to be deeply engaged in Don Juan's teachings.

As Castaneda delved deeper into his research, he witnessed phenomena that challenged his preconceived notions. The power and efficacy of the Shaman's practices were beyond his imagination. Through his experiences with Don Juan, he gained insights into a world of ancient wisdom and spiritual healing. The books not only provide a fascinating account of Castaneda's journey but also offer valuable lessons on human nature, consciousness, and the power of plants.

Reading these books can be a transformative experience, opening one's eyes to new possibilities and perspectives. It is a journey that takes the reader into the heart of Mexican Shamanism and reveals the hidden mysteries of the natural world. So, if you are ready to embark on an adventure of the mind and spirit, pick up these books and let Castaneda's story inspire you.

With this fifth volume, Castaneda definitely sanctions the metamorphosis from a plausible diary to a novel tending towards the fantastic. Once again, it is worth remembering that in the case of Castaneda, it is more important to look at the content and the teachings present on its pages than to worry about the consistency of facts, dates, and circumstances. Certainly, the apparent naivety of the expository style of the first three novels is now a faded memory in time: here we find an author capable of captivating his reader until the end, with an effective narrative and a more fantasy-like than reportage-like taste.

The fifth volume seems to mark a significant departure from the earlier works. The shift towards the fantastic adds an element of mystery and excitement that keeps the reader engaged. It's as if Castaneda is taking the reader on a journey into a world that is both strange and alluring. The teachings within the pages, although perhaps not as straightforward as in the previous novels, offer valuable insights and food for thought.

Despite the change in style, Castaneda's ability to tell a story remains intact. The narrative flows smoothly, drawing the reader in and making them eager to discover what lies ahead. Whether you are a fan of his earlier works or new to his writing, this fifth volume is sure to leave an impression and keep you coming back for more.
