Şibumi öyle garip bir kitap ki zamanın kitapta kullanımı olarak "Her Şey Aydınlandı" romanına benziyor. Karakterler ve siyasi olayların düzenlenmesi olarak "Yüzyıllık Yalnızlık" ve "1984" gibi romanları hissettiğiniz yerler var. Fakat garip olan şu ki kitap bir film gibi. Yani kime sorsam ya da nerede görsem filminin çekilmediğine şaşırıyor. Ben kitapta bir "Old Man" filmi de gördüm. Lafı uzatmadan artı ve eksi yönlerine geçiyorum :

Artı yönleri :
- Romanda çok sayıda kültürle iç içe olabiliyorsunuz bunun içinde Amerikan kültüründen Japon kültürüne, Bask kültüründen Fransız kültürüne ya da Kosta Rika kültürüne kadar çok sayıda kültür bulunmakta. Bunun nedeni kitabın ana karakteri Nicholai Hel'in bu kültürlerin hepsinden birer parçası olması. Özellikle de Japon kültürüne ait "Go" oyunuyla beraber hayatını da buna göre düzenleyip hareketlerini buna göre belirleyebilmesi, algılarını buna göre geliştirebilmesi kitabın ana konularından biri.

- Kitabın adı aslında aş��rı bilgelikten basitliği yakalamaya yönelim anlamı taşısa da kitabın vermek istediği mesajlar başka konularda ve çok fazla bulunuyor. Roman bilgilerden geçip basitliğe varmak dışında Amerikan kültürü eleştirisi, modernizmin getirdiği kahramanların klişe özelliklerine eleştiriler, CIA ve FBI gibi örgütlerin Arap kültürlerine bakış açıları, Rusların, Japonların, Amerikalıların, Çinlilerin birbirleriyle olan ilişkilerinde birbirlerine karşı bakış açıları gibi çok geniş bir yelpaze var. Yani esas konu dışında kendinizi bazen Pearl Harbor saldırısında da bulabiliyorsunuz Hiroşima'da da bulabiliyorsunuz. Ama dediğim gibi bunlar romanın konusuna o kadar ince serpiştirilmiş ki bu saldırılar salt siyaset olarak verilmemiş. Kitap daha çok bir Batı kültürü eleştirisi ve genel yargı olarak çoğu kitabın hep Batı'ya yönelmiş olması. Romanda çoğu zaman Doğu kültürü ve onun kenara atılan spiritüel özellikleri irdelenmiş.

- Artı yön olarak vermek doğru mu bilmiyorum fakat kitabın son baskılarında ilk baskılarında verilmiş olan Hel'in saldırı taktikleri konuları çıkartılmış. Bunun nedeni olarak bu kitabı okuyan insanların bu taktiklerden etkilenip de cinayetlere sebebiyet olmalarından dolayıymış. Bu kitabın bir yerinde dipnot olarak geçiyor.

- Romanın bende bıraktığı etki olarak uyuduktan sonra diğer günün hemen gelmesini istedim çünkü bu kadar interaktif bir karakteri okumak gerçekten çok zevkli. İçinde mağaracılık hobisi bulunan bir adamın meditasyon anılarından savaş zamanlarındaki düşüncelerine, Go oyununu hayatına yayışına kadar bir çok deneyimleme bulunuyor.

Eksi yönleri :
- Kitabın E Yayınları ile çıkan basımında ufak tefek de olsa imla hataları var. Okumanızı etkilemiyor.
- Romanın bazı yerlerinde abartıya kaçılmış gibi hissettim. Bunda Hel'in yakınlık duygusunun etkisi var. Bu duyguyu bir insana koyunca çevresindeki insanların nerede olduklarını ve nereye gitmek istediklerini anlayan bir adam haline dönüşmüş. Fakat aslında bunun nedeni Hel'in Allah vergisi dil öğrenme ve düşünme yetenekleri ayrıca Go oyununu düşündüğü sırada kendini çok başka yerlerde hissedebilmesinin de etkisi var.

The first warning sign was that the author goes by only one name. Any guy who attempts this little bit of artifice not doubt has an ego that impedes upon gentle ingress and egress of doors, automobiles, sweaters, etc. Even the people who have pulled off the single moniker still have full names that are known to their most ardent fans (e.g., Elvis Aaron Presley, Jesus Horatio Christ). Still, this was enough to have me determined to root against the guy's protagonist out of sheer spite, but I digress...

The writing of this book was mostly heavy-handed 2-star fair (predictable plot, stereotypical characters) with occasional 1-star bits (the protagonist has a sixth "proximity" sense that let's him identify danger in the dark, he was also a mystic, and the world's greatest lover*). The only reason I didn't give it 1 star is that there are brief passages that are well written and offer keen insights into either the human condition or the American personality (in as much as either truly exists). Of course, there are passages where he tries the same and misses (or just beats the Americans-are-shallow angle to death). In the end, I am embarrassed to admit, I did end up rooting for the protagonist and don't entirely regret the time I spent reading this one, so it I'll let him keep the second star for the time being.

*This book was written before I was born. The rankings have likely been adjusted in more recent years.

UPDATE -- I am absolutely shocked to realize that after more than 2000 reviews, this book has a higher average rating than The Glass Bead Game, The Name of the Rose, or Gravity's Rainbow. Proof that not all hive-minds are created equal...

Seldom does a book come along that is completely riveting from the first page until the very last.
This book is story within story within story, unfolding so quickly that you might find yourself gasping for air ... right after giggling like a 4 year old.
Complex and subtle, raunchy and humorous, unputdownable and yet, one must often pause to simply savor a beautiful display of master word craftmanship, the many nuances hidden between the lines.
I admit it, I've fallen in love with this book and highly recommend it to adventure fans.

I rarely write book reviews, but I have a bone to pick.
There were many very interesting parts of this book, and it started strong. Half-way through, when the main character (Hel) catches up with the present, all goes to hell.
1) Trevanian substitutes thesaurus use for style.
2) None of the main characters have any redeeming value. Despicable human beings.
3) Every woman is an easy lay, and "our hero" is more than happy to oblige. Give me a break.
4) This book was sold to me as "off the beaten path." Yet it was utterly conventional. With more depth, it might've been Clancy. With more action, it might've been Ludlum. It struck an unhappy medium.
5) And worst for last... Trevanian has created a character who belongs to no culture. From that pinnacle, he (Hel, and presumably Trevanian who doesn't pull back from his awe of Hel)is well-perched to pass judgment on all cultures. And America takes the worst beating. Hel wasn't shy about hopping up on every available piece of furniture to spit on the culture of the USA. And Trevanian was more than happy to help, by painting the absolute worst image of America's people, principles, and organizations. This is a shoddy way to treat the country that gave you birth, education, and employment for so long. We *made* you, Mr. Whitaker.

I picked this up after catching a glimpse of it in the trailer for the upcoming adaptation of Bullet Train. It's clearly a fave of the film's director David Leitch, the book also having made brief appearances in both John Wick and Atomic Blonde.

Not sure what I expected - what I got was a throwback airport thriller with a long middle section entirely devoted to the intricacies of caving.

Written under the pseudonym Trevanian (last names are for barbarian Americans) this feels like such a product of its time, perfectly suited for 12 year old me that was currently riding the era's obsession with ninjas. Our protagonist is born in Shanghai, raised by a Japanese general and infused with the mystic sensibilities of the East. Of course Nicholai Hel is white, with piercing bottle green eyes and is a superior Asian to all the Asians he's surrounding by. Capable of mystic transport and incredibly strategic Go play, Nicholai has dedicated his life to the pursuit of Shibumi or elegant simplicity. At the same time he's a master assassin who can never be photographed due to his "proximity sense", is a master of Naked/Kill - capable of turning everyday objects into deadly weapons, and is a Stage IV lover capable of ruining women for all future partners who would inevitably fail to come close to the ecstatic orgasms he could inflict.

Trevanian is a man before his time! If this was released today you know the author would be a 350lb ginger neckbeard who writes haiku and unironically owns several katanas and a Sailor Moon dakimakura.

I'm not immune to the guilty read, but this felt plodding and anti-climactic. I was hoping for more outlandish daring-do and outrageous exploits, instead I got inscrutable musings about Americans, Arabs, Brits and Australians with some global oil conspiracy theories thrown in for good measure. It just doesn't lean far enough either way to work as thriller or satire and ends up as a mediocre romp.

What a waste of paper and time.

Much like the Locator "series", our protagonist, Nicholai Hel, is at the end of his career. The first third of the book covers Hel's upbringing in war-torn Japan, then there are 50+ pages of excruciating detail about cave exploration, which seems to be the introduction to a minor character. Following that, the bad guys warn Hel off the job they think he will take to assist the niece of an old friend. More pages about this and that and kicking Volvos before the action happens, but it is all done "off screen".

This is not an action story. It is more of a means for the author to comment about the decline of America, the impotence of the French, the westernization of Japan, the evils of corporate greed, and how the oil cartels are secretly run the world (of the mid-70s). *yawn*

This book is for people who like James Bond, Jason Bourne, and all those other super-ninja Gary Stu action heroes fueled by atomic testosterone. Except if you pay attention, Trevanian is laughing at you. Shibumi shamelessly exploits every single cliche in the genre and then sneers at them. Trevanian's mockery of American culture is acidly funny and not particularly affectionate. Sometimes the self-aware satire and the angry derision seem to blend together.

“It was not their irritating assumption of equality that annoyed Nicholai so much as their cultural confusions. The Americans seemed to confuse standard of living with quality of life, equal opportunity with institutionalized mediocrity, bravery with courage, machismo with manhood, liberty with freedom, wordiness with articulation, fun with pleasure - in short, all of the misconceptions common to those who assume that justice implies equality for all, rather than equality for equals.”

So what to make of a book where the main character is named Nicholai Hel? His mother was a Russian aristocrat, he was born in Shanghai, he was raised by a Japanese go master, and in the aftermath of World War II, he becomes the most ninjaest ninja ever. He learns Basque while spending three years in solitary confinement and so he moves to Spain to hang out in Basque country with his Afro-Euroasian concubine who is lovingly described as a collection of all the best body parts from the sum of her ethnicities.

The plot is your basic revenge thriller: Hel's ties of duty and obligation bring him into conflict with the Mother Company, which is the umbrella organization representing all the world's energy interests and pretty much controls the Western world. In between snappy dialog in which Hel shows off how he is just so refined and Shibumi and shit with derision leveled at every Western country (the Brits, the French, the Italians, and the Germans all get it in the neck at some point, but no one more than Americans), there are action scenes where Hel proves he can do everything from cave diving to killing people with playing cards, equally over-the-top sex scenes 'cause of course learning to kill and play go also makes Hel totally awesome at the sexing.

What elevated this book above the schlock it is pretending to be is the vicious satire and the clever writing. Trevanian could write some sophisticated literary pulp fiction. He was having fun while poking his readers in the eye. He plays it straight all the way through: Shibumi reads like you are supposed to take it seriously, but you can kind of hear the author's snicker echoing in the main character's dialog. I suspect the racism and sexism was part of the performance. This is a Men's Adventure novel for the cynical hipsters of the 70s, back before appropriating Japanese culture was what all the cool kids did and the idea of structuring a killer thriller around the Oriental game of go (yeah, Shibumi uses words like "Oriental" unironically, and also refers to Arabs as "goat-herds" and portrays all the Arab characters as cowardly gay terrorists) made all the literati who wanted to read something a little more masculine than J.R.R. Tolkien groove on Trevanian's way cool, like, deeep understanding of Oriental culture, man.

Alas, I can't mock Trevanian nearly as wittily as he mocks me.

This was a fun novel, entertaining on multiple levels. It really does have the tone of a literary author slumming in a chanbara cinema.

Çabuk okunan keyifli bir macera romanı. Süper kahraman, komplo teorileri, cinayetler, terör eylemleri, aşk, cinsellik, üstüne bir de batı düşmanlığı ve mistisizm.

Kitabı gömmek istemem çünkü okurken, bazı kısımlar hariç gerçekten keyif aldım. İlk yarısında, yani kahramanın Japonya’daki hayatının anlatıldığı kısımda Nicholai Hel karakterinin geçmişi ve kişiliğini oluşturan ögeler ilgi çekiciydi. General ve Go ustası ile diyalogları çok güzeldi. Şibumi’nin anlatımı efsaneydi.

İkinci yarıda ise detaylı ve uzun mağara bölümleri sıktı beni. Bu kısımları atlayarak geri kalanını ise bir macera filmi izliyormuş gibi sürüklenerek okudum. Süper kahramanlı macera filmlerini de, komplo teorilerini de çok severim. Son beş yıldır küresel elitler, reptilyanlar, büyük sıfırlama, annunakiler…vs. konularına kendimi biraz fazla maruz bıraktığımdan mı  bilmem kitaptaki Ana şirket, CIA, OPEC’in dahil olduğu alengirli olaylar pek yavan geldi. CIA ve şirket adamları karikatürize, diyaloglar klişeydi.

Kitabın ilk yarısını okurken hikâyeden ve karakterlerden etkilenmişken kitap bittiğinde ne yazık ki o etki silindi gitti.

Shibumi is a thriller like no other. Although on one level, it is a story about Middle Eastern terrorists and a desperate attempt to wreak vengeance upon them, it is also the story of a CIA controlled by and compromised by the Mother Company, a consortium of oil companies determined to do whatever it takes to keep the oil flowing, including embracing and supporting the amoral terrorists that have become the darlings of the Arab world. In writing about such things, Trevanian calls into question the values that lead the Western world to embrace materialism and consumerism to the expense of justice, morality, decency. It is also the biography of a unique man who is of no country and of no nationality. Nikolai Hel, born in the Shanghai of Nationalist China between the two world wars to a Russian Countess and a German adventurer, raised by a Japanese Imperialist General during Japanese Occupation. Hel is a European with Asian consciousness. Eventually, after years of torture and imprisonment, he becomes the world's foremost assassin and, although now retired and living in the Basque provinces, he is the one who perhaps can stand up to the machinations of the Mother Company. This is a lengthy novel and is large in scope, taking on numerous themes from the corporate military complex to environmentalism to consumerism to mysticism and finding inner peace.

No hay razón para que este libro resulte tan largo.
Sobran demasiadas descripciones innecesarias y no logré sentir empatía con ninguno de los personajes, todos me resultaron sobreactuados, cosificados, exagerados.
El autor parece querer demostrar su erudición y amplitud de alcance intelectual en temas poco usuales para el lector promedio occidental; cocina exótica, manejo de poliglotismo en idiomas complejos como vasco, ruso, japonés y chino; conocimientos detallados de espeleología y equipamiento técnico de escalada, hoplología y balística, técnica y estrategia del Go, filosofía oriental, en fin...
El protagonista pretende ser superhumano; descolla inteligencia, es amante perfecto, tiene un supersentido de ubicación espacial, una percepción chamánica de las auras de las personas y más cosas que ya ni recuerdo.
Van tres estrellas porque en algunas escenas de la crianza de Niko hay conceptos budistas que están bien planteados.
Igual, me pareció pesado y pedante.

trevanian ile tanıştığım için inanılmaz derecede mutluyum.

bir müze, yazarın kitaplarından birinde müze soygununu detaylıca anlattıktan sonra aynı şekilde soyulmuş. bu yüzden o bölüm kitaptan çıkarılmış. yine başka kitaplarında ve şibumi'de bahsedilen ileri düzey cinsel teknikler ve hoda korosu yani "the art of improvised weaponry" tekniği ile alakalı da sansürlemeye gidilmiş. hoda "çıplak" anlamına geliyor, korosu da "öldürmek". etraftaki basit nesnelerle bir insanın hayati organlarına saldırmak üzerine kurulu bir teknik. joker'in sihirbazlık yaparak kalemi kaybettiği sahneyi hatırlattı bana.

"Bildiğin gibi Şibumi, sıradan, olağan görünümlerin altında yatan gizli üstünlükleri anlatır." ya da "Şibumi için bilgilerden geçip basitliğe varmak gerek." ibareleri şibumi felsefesinin o alçak gönüllülüğünün, mütevaziliğinin yanı sıra görünmeyen heybetini de anlatıyor.

kitapta bahsedilen go oyununu hiç merak etmedim bu arada. satranç tadında oyunlara pek kafam basmadığından muhtemelen. fakat ana karakterimiz nicholai hel'in mistik oluşu beni mistisizmi araştırmaya sevketti. ekstaz, trans ve bilumum üst bilinç durumlarıyla alakalı şeyleri okudukça he-man'in abisi çetindeki kaplan gibi zevkleniyorum..

Reading Shogun reminded me this gem that I first came across in my teenage years. I don’t know how much of its satire I caught back then but was a page turner for me just as a spy thriller. I still have a lot to learn about Go even after decades I first found it out. five stars for blowing my mind as a teenage boy way back.

hey gidi. ilk gidişim nerdeyse kırk sene olmuş eskiden seksenlerde Eskişehir’de eski kitapçı vardı Köprübaşı civarında “Al Götür Oku Getir” diye. Daha çok Teksas Tommiks serilerini deste deste alırdım ve diğer süper kahraman çizgi romanları, Kızılmaske, Süpermen gibi. Sıcak sular tarafında mı yoksa Sakarya yanında bi arasokakta mı çıkaramadım şimdi. Hay bin kunduz! Profesör Oklitus gibi kayboldum. Neyse arada Jason Bourne, Şogun, Şibumi gibi güzel gerilim maceralar da çıkardı. Ergen oğlan olarak okuyunca Şibumi aklımı başımdan almıştı. Aynı yaz Travenian’ın Katya’nın Yazı da devirince tersim dönmüştü iyice. Şibumi okurken Fuseki ne ki Sabaki ne ola ki diye epey Meydan Larousse karıştırmıştım. Sonra bazı klasiklerin çevirilerini de ilk orda buldum sanırım. NŞA da para yetiştirip alamıcan kitapları yüzde on fiyatına al oku getir. Kim düşünüp açtıysa ozaman ruhu şad olsun.
