The best friend of man had a very good adaptation in 2008.

And with the reading (finally) of the book that inspired the movie, we completed this circle that closes in my life.

Eight years of wanting to read it and finally, after the death of two of my life companions, I was able to do it.

Everything comes when it has to come, and I'm grateful to keep growing with readings like this and with my four-legged friends.

The movie adaptation might have introduced many people to the story, but reading the book offers a deeper and more immersive experience.

It allows us to explore the characters' thoughts and emotions in greater detail.

Although it took me a long time to get to this point, it was well worth the wait.

I'm sure that this book will continue to have a profound impact on me and that I'll cherish the memories of reading it for a long time to come.

John and Jenny, the newlyweds, have a rather charming idea.

Despite not knowing much about dogs, they firmly believe that a puppy will be the perfect addition to their already blissful marital life.

They do receive some valuable advice on how to choose a dog, but unfortunately, they choose to ignore it.

It's almost as if disaster is looming large and can be seen from a mile away.

Luckily, however, all the parties involved are deeply committed to each other.

Just like all Labradors, Marley thinks the world of his owners and believes they are the best thing since sliced bread.

Even though Marley grows into a rather rowdy and mischievous dog, causing havoc on their lives, their home, and even their friends, he remains an integral part of the family.

He is there through all the ups and downs, through triumphs and disasters.

Of course, he is also the source of a fair share of troubles.

And, as is the case in all relationships, he brings about a wide range of emotions and contributes to a great deal of personal growth.

This is indeed a lovely and entertaining story.

Although it may not be entirely unique in its concept, it is well-written and engaging.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and would highly recommend it to others.

I still find myself shedding tears whenever I think about this book. It holds a special place in my heart, like a precious golden treasure. The story is so touching that it has the power to bring on a flood of emotions and start the water works within me. Just the mere thought of this book is enough to make me get all emotional. The writing is truly beautiful, with every word carefully crafted to draw the reader in. And as you read, you can't help but fall deeply in love with Marley. He is such a charming and endearing character that he will stay with you long after you've turned the last page. I was extremely disappointed in this book.

What I had expected to read was a hilarious story about a naughty dog. However, all I ended up getting from it was an illustration of how some individuals fail to think carefully before impulsively going out and purchasing a dog, only to find themselves overwhelmed with a dog that is not suitable for their lifestyle.

This book serves as a sort of "what not to do" guide for dog ownership. It presents a rather negative perspective that might deter those who truly love dogs.

If you have a deep affection for dogs, then perhaps it would be best to avoid reading this book. It may not provide the kind of entertainment or positive insights that you are seeking.

Overall, my experience with this book was far from what I had hoped for.

The entire book simply gives the impression of being dated. Grogan comes across as thoroughly unlikeable. He refers to teenage girls as 'cute' in a rather inappropriate way. He describes his coworkers solely based on their physical attractiveness, which is quite shallow. He also shames sex workers and even goes as far as to call women with breast implants'sex dolls'. These are just a few of the major things that really turn one off.

To be quite honest, my heart goes out to Marley. It seems as if Marley is in a situation where he has to deal with Grogan's less than admirable behavior. It makes one wonder what kind of an impact this has on Marley. Overall, the book's portrayal of Grogan and his actions really detracts from what could have potentially been a more engaging and positive story.

Perhaps if Grogan's character had been developed in a more empathetic and respectful way, the book might have had a better chance of winning over readers. As it stands, however, the unlikable nature of Grogan and the outdated attitudes he displays make it a rather difficult read.

A movie was crafted based on this very book. The story is truly captivating.

From IMDb, it is described as a family that acquires significant life lessons from their endearing, yet mischievous and neurotic dog.

How could one not fall in love with this narrative? Even though I may not be an ardent fan of Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston, I wholeheartedly adored this movie, Marley & Me (2008).

How can you not love this book?

It truly reminded me of my family dog and the unconditional love he showered upon us. Although he wasn't as crazy as Marley, he possessed the same level of devotion and loyalty.

This book has an incredible power to tug at your heartstrings. I'm certain that even if you haven't owned a dog, you will still thoroughly enjoy it. It made me both laugh and cry, and I found myself nodding in recognition of some of the hilarious antics that Marley got up to.

The writing is simple and straightforward, making it an easy read. I would highly recommend this book without a doubt.

NB: Interestingly, I actually saw the film before reading the book. Despite all the negative press it received, I thought the film was outstanding. It captured the essence of the book brilliantly. So, if you haven't seen the film yet, I would also highly recommend that!

Ahhh! I truly adored this book. It brought a plethora of emotions within me. I laughed heartily at the humorous anecdotes, cried tears of joy and sadness, and reminisced about my own beloved black Labrador, Duff. Just as John said, "They really are they when you need them." Duff was always by my side. We went on countless walks, down the hill, across the streets, and along the Golf Course, with the sun setting in the background. We would sit on the couch together, engrossed in a movie. Or we would be out on the hill, at my sunny spot, where I would write or listen to music, and Duff would be there, faithfully.

Sometimes he would sleep on my bed, although usually he had too many fleas. I took care of him, feeding him, giving him water, and taking him on more walks than any other family member. In a way, he helped me lose weight. But as he grew old, he got sick. He was 13 years old. During his last months, I was there for him. I was living at my parents' house and happened to be there when he was declining. I took him on some of his final walks through the countryside. He would sniff the cows, and they would try to knock him over, probably thinking he was a "dumb old dog." But he was ours, and we loved him dearly.

Michelle saved another dog from a vicious attack. I was too afraid to do it, but she bravely jumped in and rescued the dog. I mopped up Duff's mess when he was too old to move. That's how much I cared about him. Dad would lift and carry him up and down the stairs, and I would give him hugs. I loved his little face. He was a constant presence throughout my teenage years. We got him when I was around 11, and he passed away when I was 24. I love Logan, but I have a special place in my heart for Duff. Probably because of the long walks we took together. We would walk for hours on the ranch, and I would let him chase things in the river or down the gravel path. I loved playing frisbee and ball with him when we lived at 5899 Marigold Ln at San Miguel Elementary. He was so good at it. He also kept us safe. When my parents were out at business meetings until 2 or 3 in the morning, Duff was there, watching over us all, barking at anyone who came to the door. He was one of the best things that happened to our family, one of the few things that made us feel "normal" and human.

I loved our trips to Healdsburg memorial Beach with Duff and Dad. Jeff and Michelle would come too, and we would play for hours at the river. Duff would swim, fetch sticks, and grab rocks in the water, struggling to bring them back to Dad. It was one of the times when my Dad was truly happy. If it wasn't for Duff, I don't know if we would have spent as much time together as a family. He was a beautiful, genuine soul. He made my mom a dog lover, and I myself will always be a dog lover. I have a dog personality rather than a cat personality. I'm fun-loving, carefree, and free-spirited. Dogs are truly amazing! My favorite quote from the book is: "I have a theory, and writing the book sharpened it, that people can learn a lot from their dogs. Lessons on how to lead happier, more fulfilling lives. Lessons for successful relationships. Think about it. Many of the qualities that come so effortlessly to dogs - loyalty, devotion, selflessness, unflagging optimism, unqualified love - can be elusive to humans. My hunch is that people who act more like dogs have happier marriages. That's assuming, of course, you don't marry someone who emulates cats. Then you're in trouble. Cats will outsmart dogs every time." Page 304

Yes, I am a dog person, and yes, my first marriage was to a cat person! He has said he loves cats! So that's why it didn't work out! Now I look for someone who has that same free-spirited nature that I have.

This book made me think deeply about my beloved black lab. I pray that I can have my own black lab someday. I want one so badly! But I know I need a house, a stable job to care for the dog, time, and patience. It's funny because the way I think about having a dog is similar to how most people think about having children, in terms of the responsibility factor. For me, having children was like, "Yeah, let's just jump right in!" But with dogs, I know better. I know what it takes.

I love this book with all my heart, and I'm so glad John Grogan wrote it. His memoir is so complete, moving, and beautiful. I want to live with that family. I want to be able to have Marley or Duff to lean on when times get hard. I absolutely love and cherish this book and will probably reread it just to experience it all over again. I was at work when I was reading it, and I was sitting there at my desk, literally shedding tears. No one saw me though! I also highly enjoy the fact that John is a journalist, editor, and columnist. He inspires me! I want to go to his book signing in November 2008 down in Corte Madera. I may actually go and meet him. He is that good of an author and now one of my favorites! Love it, love it, love it!!!

This book truly had me in stitches on several occasions, which is an extremely rare occurrence, especially for books that are primarily centered around humor.

We own a rescue lab mix, and it was quite a delight to come across the account of a dog that misbehaves even more than ours. It gave me a sense of relief and made me realize that our dog's antics are not so out of the ordinary after all.

I was also very glad that the author chose the rescue route the second time around. It shows a great deal of compassion and responsibility towards these animals in need.

This not only adds a heartwarming element to the story but also serves as an inspiration for others to consider rescuing pets. Overall, this book is not only entertaining but also has a positive message to convey.

A dog has no use for fancy cars or big homes or designer clothes. Status symbols mean nothing to him.

A water-logged stick will do just fine. A dog judges others not by their color or creed or class but by who they are inside.

A dog doesn't care if you are rich or poor, educated or illiterate, clever or dull. Give him your heart and he will give you his.

I never 'dog-ear' pages in the books I read. I like my books to remain looking as new as possible and I enjoy perfectly pressed paper with no hint of wear.

Last night as I finished the last few pages of the book, "Marley & Me" I dog-eared two pages; very unlike me. I couldn't help it.

I was so moved by Grogan's words that I wanted anyone (myself included) who read or re-read the book to be as moved as I was.

This book for me was something special. I am stingy about giving 5 stars to any book I read. When I was about 2/3 of the way through, my husband asked me what I thought of the book.

I hesitated before responding, "Uh, its alright". I was not overly impressed at that point. I was enjoying the story but I knew where it was heading.

I knew I would finish the book with tears (which is not out of the ordinary for me). Sure enough, when I finished the book, tears streaming down my face I was sad it was finished and knew, for me, it was going to be a 5-star book.

I was swept away with the writing and the story. It moved me emotionally and the more I think about it, the more I love it.

The author, John Grogan, is the owner of the crazy dog and the storyteller. For his profession, Grogan is a columnist so he has amazing writing skill.

I enjoyed his sarcastic humor and the creative way he told his story about Marley. My husband and I are non-pet owners and will likely remain so.

We both work full time. We are clean freaks. We like to travel. That being said, my mind for a half of a second wanted to change as I dog-eared the second page:

"He became part of our melded fabric, a tightly woven and inseparable strand in the weave that was us. Just as we had helped shape him into the family pet he would become, he helped to shape us, as well- as a couple, as parents, as animal lovers, as adults.

Despite everything, all the disappointments and unmet expectations, Marley had given us a gift, at once priceless and free. He taught us the art of unqualified love. How to give it, how to accept it. Where there is that, most of the other pieces fall into place."

I'm not sure I'll see the movie because I know the book is better. I don't have to see the movie to know that I already like the book more.

A movie can't capture the thoughts of Marley's family like the book can. The movie will also lose the enchanting writing of very talented author.

Moreover, the book allows the reader to fully immerse in the details and emotions that might not be as vividly portrayed in the movie.

It gives us the opportunity to imagine the scenes and the characters in our own minds, adding a personal touch to the story.

The movie might simplify some of the complex themes and relationships in the book, losing the depth and nuance that made it so special.

So, even though the movie might be visually appealing and entertaining, I believe the book will always hold a special place in my heart.

It's a story that will stay with me for a long time and I will continue to recommend it to others.

Okay, I read two dog books in a row because my book club decided to do this for our February meeting.

That said, this book made me laugh so hard I cried and then, of course, I cried at the end as one must with all dog books if one loves dogs.

I am the former owner of four Marley's--a black Lab, a yellow Lab (pure breed AKC registered and probably Marley's first cousin), a chocolate Lab, and a Lab/Husky/Wolf mix. They all cost me thousands of dollars in vet bills, household and yard improvements and repairs, and pet sitters and dog walkers.

Like Marley, none of them could tolerate fire crackers, thunderstorms, or being kept in a kennel. Maybe I am unable to learn from previous experience or just a bad dog owner/trainer.

I loved them all and think of them almost every day. I loved their loyalty, empathy, exuberance, and unconditional love. Like Marley, these qualities made me overlook their inability to really follow the rules and their selective hearing whenever I gave them commands.

It's truly amazing how dogs can bring so much joy and chaos into our lives at the same time. Their presence is like a warm embrace on a cold day, yet they can also cause us to pull our hair out with their antics. But in the end, it's their love and the memories we create with them that make it all worthwhile.
