These stories, although they may not possess the same intense emotional or lyrical impact as those of Katherine Anne Porter or Faulkner, are still highly enjoyable and beautiful.

What I truly appreciate about Welty is her unassuming and direct approach in depicting life in rural Mississippi. She reveals both the heartwarming and beautiful aspects, while never shying away from uncovering the dysfunction and even violence that lies beneath the surface of seemingly ordinary families, towns, and lives.

Due to my family's deep roots in Mississippi that span multiple generations, I feel a particular connection to her writing. However, there is also a sense of disconnect because of my own upbringing in a Southern city, which is worlds apart from the small town South.

I firmly believe that I will revisit these stories in the future, and I anticipate that I will discover an entirely new set of meanings upon a second reading.

This anticipation adds an element of excitement and curiosity to my literary journey with Welty's works.

The book, which is a collection of short stories, was decent. There were a significant number of what I would refer to as "pulp fiction" style stories. However, there are also some truly outstanding stories that showcase Welty's remarkable ability to create unforgettable characters within just a few pages.

Some of my personal favorites and highly recommended stories include: "A Worn Path", "The Whistle", and especially "Why I Live at the P.O.", to mention just a few. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who has an appreciation for (Southern) women writers or for Southern rural life.

The stories in "A Curtain of Green and Other Stories" offer a diverse range of perspectives and experiences, painting a vivid picture of the South and its people.

Eudora Welty's writing is engaging,细腻, and full of heart, making this collection a must-read for anyone interested in exploring the rich literary traditions of the South.

Eudora Welty's literary range is truly staggering.

During the initial part of the book, I was completely immersed in the intricate back-and-forths of her Southern characters. Each one was brought to life with such brilliance by Welty that it felt as if they were real people right in front of me.

In the second section, I found myself continuously dog-earing corner after corner to mark the passages that simply lifted me up and away. There is truly no other way to describe the impact these passages had on me.

I am now eagerly anticipating reading more of her works. Her writing has a unique charm and power that keeps drawing me in, and I can't wait to see what other literary treasures she has in store.

I highly recommend Eudora Welty's books to anyone who appreciates great literature and wants to be transported to a different world through the pages of a book.

This is my first encounter with Eudora Welty, and I must say that it has truly whetted my appetite for more.

Eudora has an innate understanding of people. Not only does she understand them, but she also loves them deeply. Just like other great southern literature writers, it is her sense of empathy and wonder towards the human race that makes her stories so endlessly captivating. With just a few words, she is able to transcend her beautifully crafted descriptions and reach that intangible feeling that brings all of her characters to life.

Perhaps there were a few stories here and there that didn't quite capture my imagination, but those probably deserve a second read. For the most part, her writing is exquisite. I think the most beautifully written story in this collection is "A Memory," although for me, it may be more about style than substance.

I have to agree with other reviewers about the brilliance of "Why I Live at the P.O.," and some of my other favorites include "Death of a Traveling Salesman," "A Petrified Man," and the devastating "A Worn Path." These stories are not only masterpieces of southern literature but also a testament to Eudora Welty's remarkable talent as a writer.

I am excited to explore more of her works and see what other treasures she has in store for readers.

This year, I have truly fallen in love with short stories.

I have had the pleasure of delving into the works of Welty and have thoroughly enjoyed every single one of them.

Her stories have a unique charm that draws you in from the very beginning and keeps you hooked until the end.

The way she crafts her characters and weaves together the plots is simply masterful.

Each story feels like a complete world of its own, filled with rich emotions and vivid descriptions.

I know for a fact that I will be revisiting her works again and again.

There is just so much depth and beauty to discover in her short stories that I can't get enough of them.

They have become a source of inspiration and joy for me, and I can't wait to see what other wonderful stories she has in store.

No matter how many times I read these stories, I always discover something new. Currently, reading this collection with the Welty book club, I am deeply impressed by the idea that dreams can serve as a defense mechanism. Several stories in this collection bring this concept to life. I constantly think of Ellen Gilchrist's _In the Land of Dreamy Dreams_, as it could potentially be another fitting title for this collection.

The use of dreams in these stories adds a layer of depth and mystery. It allows the characters to escape from reality, to find solace and hope in the midst of difficulties. Dreams become a place where they can be whoever they want to be, do whatever they desire. They offer a form of protection, a shield against the harshness of the outside world.

As I delve deeper into these stories, I am intrigued by the different ways in which dreams are portrayed. Some are vivid and colorful, while others are more模糊 and elusive. But regardless of their nature, they all have the power to touch our hearts and minds, to make us think about our own dreams and the role they play in our lives.

When one hears someone speaking of great Southern writers, it is usually Faulkner, O'Connor, and Welty who are mentioned in the same breath, especially when it comes to the gothic genre.

However, after reading this first published collection of Welty's, I must admit to being slightly underwhelmed. It should be noted that this assessment is made in the context of the reputation that precedes it. The writing is indeed fine, and some of the stories are interesting, but it is certainly not at the level of Faulkner.

In this collection, the two most traditionally revered stories are the title story and the final one called "A Worn Path." For me, neither was a standout, but of the two, the latter was the better. In this book, the stories that stand out to this reader include, in no particular order, The Key, Why I Live At the P.O., Old Mr. Marblehall, and Flowers For Marjorie. There are no suburban people or strivers in Welty's stories, only those who are afflicted in one way or another. In these four stories, two introduce us to people with less than full mental acuity, one is a scoundrel bigamist, and the other features a family that could be called dysfunctional at best.

The two stories that I rate the highest are back to back in the book. "The Whistle" tells of a poor farming family whose unending night is blighted by the tune of the town's frost whistle, while "The Hitchhikers" shows us what happens when a good man picks up two men with bad intent but who are not in agreement about just how bad they wish to be.

Overall, the stories are interesting, and inevitably, I will try some more of her writing. However, nothing in this book makes me want to rush in doing so.

Welty is an outstanding writer. She has an incredible ability to present stories in a wide variety of psychological flavors. In this text, from one story to another, you would never suspect that you are reading the works of the same author. All the stories deal with themes such as insanity, violence, and the countryside. However, they vary greatly in tone. For example, "The Whistle" has a somber and slow cadence, while "Why I Live at the P.O." is bouncy and happily silly. (
"'Wah!' says Stella-Rondo, and has a fresh conniption fit.")
I had read "Powerhouse" and "A Worn Path" before without even knowing their author. Sections from "Powerhouse" even appear in a textbook I read for teaching prose style. Welty is truly worth a look. Her works offer a rich and diverse exploration of the human condition and the art of storytelling.

Raccolta molto varia, anche se l'impronta della Welty è sempre ben riconoscibile. There is a profound empathy that runs through her works, yet there is also a hardness when it is necessary. This unique combination makes her collection truly stand out.

Among the best short stories are: "La chiave", "La sirena", "Gli autostoppisti", "Un ricordo", and "Clytie". Each of these stories offers a distinct perspective and showcases Welty's remarkable talent for storytelling.

"La chiave" might take the reader on a journey of mystery and discovery, while "La sirena" could explore themes of longing and desire. "Gli autostoppisti" might present a vivid picture of human interaction on the road, and "Un ricordo" could evoke a sense of nostalgia and reflection. "Clytie" might delve into the complex emotions and relationships of its characters.

Overall, Welty's collection is a must-read for anyone who appreciates fine literature and the art of the short story. Cit.

I really liked the writing, but the short stories didn't tell me much.

I want to read something by the author that is not short stories. Maybe she has written a novel or a memoir. I think those would give me a better understanding of her as a writer and a person.

I'm curious to see if her writing style changes in a different format. Would she be more descriptive? Would the characters be more developed?

I'm looking forward to exploring more of her work and seeing what else she has to offer.
