Ages 8 and up. When her Chinese-American grandchildren express their feelings of boredom, their grandmother Ying-Ying embarks on a journey of storytelling. She shares a vivid tale from her own childhood. It was the time of the moon festival, a joyous occasion. Ying-Ying went to the festival with the hope of meeting the Moon Lady, who was said to grant wishes. However, in the excitement and the hustle and bustle of the festival, she got separated from her family.

The story is brought to life by bright illustrations that are filled with a wealth of detail. The text is not only rich but also quite metaphorical and complex, which makes it less suitable for preschoolers. Nevertheless, it is an excellent choice for primary school kids who have a passion for a good story. They will be captivated by the adventure and the emotions in the narrative, while also being able to appreciate the deeper meanings and the cultural context that the story offers.

Here is an interesting tale that is a quick read. Tan has an amazing ability to paint vivid pictures with her words, which I truly enjoy.

This short story commences with a little girl who is attired for Moon Day in a yellow outfit with black highlights. However, she doesn't take a liking to it and desires to get rid of it. So, she smears fish guts and scales on it. As a result, her nanny becomes furious and is certain that the mother will dismiss her and punish the little girl. The nanny instructs the little girl to "stay put" on the party boat while she goes to search for a remedy. But then, the little girl ends up going overboard and... Instead of revealing all the details, I'll let you read the remainder of the story and discover what unfolds.

I thought this one was okay.

The story it presented was an interesting Chinese folk tale that delved into the themes of making wishes and what truly matters in life.

However, when it comes to the formatting of the book, there is an issue. It has an entire page of text placed right next to a beautifully detailed picture.

I believe the book was originally intended for fairly small children, considering it is a picture book. But from my experience, no little kids I know would have the patience to sit through this entire book.

If one were to do a compare and contrast with this particular book, they might consider "Ping" by Marjorie Flack. That book is far more appealing to kids as it has a much better balance of text to pictures.

It engages children more effectively and keeps their attention throughout the reading process.

Overall, while the story in this book is interesting, the formatting could be improved to better suit the intended audience.

I have not only read the picture book with its excellent illustrations but also listened to it. The experience was truly wonderful.

The illustrations in the picture book were so captivating that they seemed to bring the story to life. Each page was a work of art, filled with vivid colors and detailed images that added depth and dimension to the narrative.

Listening to the story being read aloud was an equally enjoyable experience. The narrator's voice was engaging and expressive, adding an extra layer of emotion to the words on the page. It was like being transported into a different world, where I could immerse myself in the story and let my imagination run wild.

Overall, reading and listening to this picture book was a delightful experience that I would highly recommend to anyone. Whether you are a child or an adult, this book is sure to capture your heart and leave you with a sense of wonder and joy.

Lengthy story but I think it has a really good message.
