While I was eagerly waiting for the books I had ordered online to arrive in the mail, I thought it would be a good idea to stop at the store and grab a "quick read" to fill the time until my precious parcels arrived. That's when I spotted "Working Stiff" by Grant Stoddard. The cover looked quite hilarious, and I had a hunch that a funny read was exactly what I needed at that moment.
Grant Stoddard, a college-aged British guy, found himself in NYC. After some couch surfing and girlfriend hunting, he somehow ended up writing about sex for Nerve.com. His job was to engage in a wide variety of unique sexual activities and atmospheres and then report his experiences. This included everything from public subway sex to throwing all kinds of food items at a gay man with a unibrow.
I had rather mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, his sexual exploits were indeed hilarious and were written in a very engaging way. However, on the other hand, his daily grind seemed quite dull. I felt that the parts of the book in between the sex-related content were just pure filler. It was like a bunch of garbage that I was really tempted to just skim through. So, while his adventures were definitely fun and compelling reads, the rest of the book was rather mind-numbing.
Hatte Goddard überhaupt einen Redakteur?
This is a question that keeps popping up when one reads this book. It seems as if there was a lack of proper editorial oversight.
The book has great potential, but it falls short in many aspects. There are numerous errors in grammar, spelling, and punctuation. The flow of the narrative is often disrupted, making it difficult for the reader to fully engage with the story.
Moreover, the organization of the content could be improved. Some sections seem disjointed and lack a clear connection to the overall theme.
If only there had been a more meticulous editor, this book could have been so much better. It could have been a masterpiece instead of a work that leaves the reader with a sense of disappointment.
Hopefully, in future editions, the necessary revisions will be made to enhance the quality of this book and do justice to the author's ideas.
