If I were an English teacher, I would undoubtedly create a special class dedicated to studying her remarkable work.

I firmly believe that her literary creations hold profound insights and valuable lessons that can greatly enrich the minds of my students.

If I were a pastor at a church, Anne Lamott's books would become an integral part of most of my sermons.

Alternatively, I might even create a faith study specifically centered around her books.

Although this text was written in 2007, it remains astonishingly timely today.

It makes one wonder how she manages to hit the nail on the head every single time.

Clearly, she is like a saint on earth, whose words have the power to touch the hearts and souls of people from all walks of life.

Her work has the ability to inspire, console, and guide, making it a precious gift to the world.

Whether in the classroom or within the walls of a church, her books have the potential to make a significant impact and bring about positive change.

Anne Lamott has penned a remarkable series of essays that delve into the realm of faith, all set within the backdrop of the gritty realities of daily existence.

Her words have a unique power that makes readers feel as if she has walked in their shoes during their spiritual odysseys. In these essays, while many familiar topics resurface, such as Anne's family, her struggles with addictions, and her political views, in this particular volume, the themes of love, charity, empathy, and forgiveness take center stage.

Anne openly confesses that she has even managed to let go of her hatred for some of her former prime targets. She remarks, "I don't hate anyone right now, not even George W. Bush. This seems almost impossible, but it's true and perhaps indicates the presence of grace or dementia, or both."

She also admits that while many of our emotions remain constant as we age, our capacity to govern our behavior does evolve. She states, "Sometimes I act just as juvenile as I ever did, but as I get older I do it for shorter periods of time."

I had the distinct impression that she was addressing me directly. Although her sarcasm, black humor, and unwavering honesty deeply appeal to me, I couldn't help but notice that many of the essays felt repetitive, as the stories had already been recounted in her previous works.

Anne, I truly love you. Please gift us with more original and profound reflections on life and faith. So often, I find your musings to be right on the mark, hitting the bullseye of my own thoughts and feelings.

Ugh. As a die-hard fan of Anne Lamott, I must admit that this particular book is not among her finest works.

There are an excessive number of political rants throughout the pages. While it was still somewhat readable, I found myself having to skip numerous chapters because they were annoyingly filled with political vitriol.

The title, "Thoughts on Faith," gives the impression that the content will focus solely on that - thoughts related to faith. However, this book turned out to be more of a compilation of anecdotes with only a passing mention of grace.

Disappointed, I am now moving on to another one of her books, hoping that it will be a significant improvement and more in line with the quality and depth that I have come to expect from Anne Lamott.

I truly believe that she is capable of producing much better works that can touch the hearts and souls of her readers on a deeper level.

Here comes more thought-provoking, humorous and spiritually-aware essays penned by Anne Lamott. I found myself particularly engrossed in the pieces that delved into the death of a friend, her complex relationship with her mother, and the way her son adapted to sleeping in a new abode. These snippets of life were truly captivating and worked wonders. However, when her politics seeped into the writing, it had a bit of a different effect. Even though she and I happen to share a plethora of the same viewpoints, the political content seemed to overshadow and detract from the rest of the book. It was as if it pulled the focus away from the otherwise wonderful and engaging stories and musings that she had to offer.

I may have finished this book, but I am far from finished with Anne Lamott.

Her unique perspective on the world and the way she articulates it through her writing have truly captivated me.

Anne Lamott has this remarkable ability to notice the smallest details in life and turn them into profound and relatable stories.

Her writing style is both humorous and poignant, making it a joy to read.

Each page feels like a personal conversation with her, as she shares her thoughts, experiences, and insights.

I find myself constantly inspired by her words, and I can't wait to explore more of her work.

She has opened my eyes to a new way of seeing the world, and I am grateful for that.

I know that I will be coming back to her books again and again, as they have become a source of comfort and inspiration for me.

In conclusion, while I may have completed this particular book, my journey with Anne Lamott has just begun.

Several of the chapters in this book read more like stream-of-consciousness journal entries rather than tightly crafted essays.

This led me to feel that the book was uneven in tone and quality. However, I did enjoy reading several of the chapters.

Particularly those on becoming more Christlike were quite interesting. For example, I had never considered what Christ would do when faced with a dishonest merchant who had stolen $50 from him.

Would it be righteous anger or loving forgiveness? I tend to be more of the righteous anger type. But Ms. Lamott acted with loving forgiveness, and that was truly inspiring to me.

I also enjoyed reading about her liberal Christian theological viewpoint. However, I thought her diatribes against political figures were out of place and distracting in a book on grace.

Though, I suppose they do serve to show that Ms. Lamott still has some work to do in the areas of love and forgiveness.

Overall, despite its flaws, the book did offer some valuable insights and perspectives.

I have been an extremely dedicated Anne Lamott fan for more than 12 years.

Perhaps it's similar to listening to your favorite album in high school repeatedly until you simply can't bear to hear it anymore. (Goodness, did I really just type the word "album"?)

I began reading this book, and Lamott still writes with her remarkable sarcastic humor, deep spirituality, and honesty, intertwined with her parenting challenges.

However, this time, despite encountering numerous valuable pieces of spiritual advice, I found myself reluctant to read it rather than looking forward to it.

Instead of laughing along with her and finding solace in her life struggles, I now felt irritated that someone with her circumstances was complaining or struggling.

After all, she has more friends in her life than I believe most people have throughout their entire lifetimes, a house with a mountain behind it in California, and a strong spiritual community.

Consequently, she sometimes ends up sounding like she's whining.

That being said, if it's your first Lamott book, you'll likely enjoy it.

If, like me, you've been reading her for years, you might want to simply locate it in the library and read a chapter before bringing it home.

This way, you can determine if it still holds the same appeal for you as her previous works.

I really liked this book. However, it didn't quite reach the level of my love for "Traveling Mercies".

It's similar to the difference between regular delicious chocolate and the exquisite delicious Belgian chocolate.

Nonetheless, I was completely happy, and my admiration for Anne Lamott remains unwavering. I truly desire to be like her.

The essence of the story is that faith and grace won't present themselves as they do in Bible stories. There won't be angels, flames, or harps involved. Disaster typically strikes for me when everything I've relied on ceases to function, including all of my finest skills, intentions, and excellent ideas.... Some seemingly pitiful thing shows up or occurs, which seems entirely insufficient to change this dire situation. But then, miraculously, it is enough.

This concept really intrigued me and made me think deeply about the nature of faith and grace in our daily lives.

This is the first book by Anne Lamott that I have attempted to read, and it will surely be the last!

Her musings on faith strike me as being more about herself than about anything else. I am truly baffled as to how one's thoughts on faith can have so little connection to God or Jesus.

I wasn't initially finding the book especially interesting or inspiring, yet I thought I would persevere. However, when I reached the chapters detailing how she once aided in a suicide and her unwavering support for abortion, and even seemingly taking pride in having had more than one, I knew at that moment that she and I are on entirely different wavelengths in our spiritual journeys.

There was simply no justifiable reason for me to continue reading beyond page 105! It became evident that our beliefs and perspectives are so vastly different that further engagement with this book would be fruitless.

A few quotes worth remembering:

The first quote, "This (life) is only one 6-billionth about you," reminds us that in the grand scheme of things, our individual lives are just a tiny fraction. It encourages us to look beyond our own selves and consider the bigger picture. We should not be too self-centered but rather strive to make a positive impact on the world around us.

The second quote, "It's hard to remember that you are a cherished spiritual being when you're burping up apple fritters and Cheetos," is a humorous yet profound statement. It highlights the fact that in our daily lives, with all the mundane and sometimes unseemly activities, we often forget our deeper spiritual nature. We need to make an effort to be more mindful and reconnect with our inner selves.

The third quote, "Prayer is not asking for what you think you want, but asking to be changed in ways you can't imagine," offers a unique perspective on prayer. It suggests that the true power of prayer lies not in getting what we desire but in allowing ourselves to be transformed. When we approach prayer with an open heart and a willingness to be changed, we open ourselves up to new possibilities and growth.

I absolutely LOVED this book.

Anne Lamott is truly a remarkable author. She is refreshingly honest in her writing, laying out her thoughts and feelings with such openness.

She admits to being flawed, but in reality, she is simply showing us her true humanity. Her journey in search of grace and forgiveness is both relatable and inspiring.

As I read her words, I found myself laughing out loud at her humorous anecdotes and also feeling a sense of hope welling up inside me.

Her writing has the power to touch the heart and make us all realize that we are not alone in our struggles and that there is always a possibility of finding grace and forgiveness in our lives.

This book is a must-read for anyone who is looking for a dose of honesty, humor, and hope.

Anne Lamott is truly remarkable in her ability to cleverly and wittily share personal anecdotes that touch on various aspects of life, including forgiveness, spirituality, motherhood, and numerous other life experiences.

Her voice is captivating, as she unapologetically reveals the often-reckless truths about herself and her past with a tone of love and non-judgment. There are indeed some true gems of wisdom and inspiration within the pages of this book, and for the most part, I found it to be an enjoyable read.

However, despite my overall enjoyment, I don't envision myself ever sharing this book with a friend. The reason being that I find myself in disagreement with her on many fundamental ideas. For instance, her views on certain matters, such as the controversial topic of killing people, are simply not in line with my own beliefs.

Moreover, she seems to rant a little too much about past President G.W. Bush. It appears as though she uses him as a convenient metaphor or theme to express her deep concerns and frustrations about the problems in the world that she feels powerless to address. While I understand her passion, I believe that there are more productive ways to approach and discuss these complex issues.

Overall, while I appreciate Anne Lamott's unique writing style and the valuable insights she offers in some areas, the fundamental differences in our beliefs and her excessive ranting about President Bush prevent me from wholeheartedly recommending this book to others.
