Twenty-five years after penning "Pilgrim at Tinkeer Creek", Dillard has once again achieved something remarkable. She has produced an engaging and far-reaching book filled with tidbits and musings that connect natural history to ethics, theology, and personal experience.

As the book jacket describes, it includes "a natural history of sand, a catalogue of clouds, a batch of newborns [with birth defects] in an obstetrical ward, and a family of Mongol horsemen." The reader also comes across Jesuit theologian Teildard de Chardin and Hasidic Judaism.

This is the classic Dillard, 25 years on, grappling with questions about God, natural evil, and individual experience. "How can an individual matter? How might one live?"

It's great stuff! You either love it or you don't understand what all the fuss is about. The people I've recommended Dillard to are split about 50/50. For my part, I love it.

Her writing is thought-provoking and her insights are profound. She has a unique ability to make the ordinary seem extraordinary and to find meaning and beauty in the simplest of things. Whether you're interested in natural history, theology, or just good writing, this book is well worth a read.
