I'm not entirely certain as to why I made the commitment to spending 455 pages with Annie Dillard this year. It took me a full ten months to complete, partly because Annie Dillard's writing is like potent whisky and I, unfortunately, am a lightweight when it comes to such literary strength.

I'm not sure if I will ever truly fathom her rather strange Catholic/hedonistic/universalist religion. Interestingly, she herself doesn't seem to have a complete understanding of it either. However, her words have this powerful effect on me. They make me yearn to step outside and really take a good, hard look at the things around me. They compel me to grapple and wrestle through my complex relationship with the ugly and the beautiful that coexist in this world. She possesses a great deal more courage and boldness than most people I know. It also appears that she has actually delved deep into the pages of the Bible.

Some of the highlights of my journey with her writing include her absolutely chilling description of a total eclipse. Her comedic tales of the early Pole Expeditions are also quite entertaining. The rascally nature of her childhood comes through vividly in her writing. Everything from "Pilgrim at Tinker Creek" is captivating. And her descriptions of the Puget Sound are simply enchanting.

Overall, my experience with Annie Dillard's work has been a challenging yet rewarding one. It has made me think, feel, and see the world in a different light.
