I firmly believe that Jim Morrison's approach to poetry bore a resemblance to the ancient Oriental method expounded by Wei T'ai in the 11th century. Wei T'ai said, "Poetry presents the thing in order to convey the feeling. It should be precise about the thing and reticent about the feeling, for as soon as the mind responds and connects with the thing, the feeling shows in words; this is how poetry enters deeply into us." Morrison, in an interview, also mentioned, "Listen, real poetry doesn't say anything, it just ticks off the possibilities. Opens all doors. You can walk through any one that suits you... and that's why poetry appeals to me so much - because it's so eternal."

Morrison's influence on my work has endured for over 20 years. I recall classes in graduate school where his poems or name would be brought up, often in a dismissive manner. However, his books of poetry have been among the highest sellers of all time in that genre and continue to be so. Morrison was Blakean in poetic sensibility and Nietzschian in philosophy. He sought to break free from the "Mind Forged Manacles" as Blake put it and desired a "World as a will to power and nothing more" as Nietzsche mentioned.
There is an eternal and powerfully visionary quality about Morrison's work that persists. He was and remains a controversial figure, a poet who attempted to re-create the theater of Artaud in a way that influenced later performers like Alice Cooper and Marilyn Manson. I think that Morrison's contribution to modern poetry was far more significant than what he is currently credited with in the academy. As the poet Michael McClure noted, "One of the things I like about this biography is that it shows that Jim knew himself to be a poet. That was the basis of my friendship and brotherhood with him. I know of no better poet of Jim's generation."

Morrison's work continues to inspire and challenge, and his place in the history of poetry is yet to be fully realized.

I have an intense and profound love for Jim Morrison.

He is an iconic figure who has left an indelible mark on the world of music and art.

The Doors, the band he fronted, are truly one of a kind. Their music is a unique blend of rock, psychedelia, and blues, creating a sound that is both captivating and revolutionary.

But it's not just the music that I love. I am also deeply drawn to Jim Morrison's poetry. His words are filled with passion, mystery, and a raw honesty that speaks directly to the soul.

His poetry is a reflection of his inner world, a world that was filled with beauty, chaos, and a longing for something more.

Jim Morrison's artistry and his ability to touch the hearts and minds of people through his music and poetry is truly remarkable.

He will always be remembered as one of the greatest artists of our time, and his influence will continue to inspire generations to come.

I am proud to say that I am a fan of Jim Morrison and The Doors, and their music and poetry will always hold a special place in my heart.

The American Night is a remarkable work that holds great significance for me.

It contains a partial screenplay and an abundance of lusty and trippy poetry. This collection represents the true poet hidden beneath the famous, and often infamous, front man, Jim Morrison.

The pieces in The American Night reveal even more about death and society than some of his original lyrics. They form a liberating, yet provocative and stimulating, style that is unique to Morrison.

As a perfect supplement to the music of The Doors, Morrison's poetic distinction is enhanced by the smooth sounds and distinct vocabulary of his verse. This has greatly broadened my perspective on poetry.

Morrison delicately balances the abstract and the concrete, revealing not only the thin line between reality and hallucination but also his own remarkable poetic prowess.

His work in The American Night is a testament to his creative genius and continues to inspire and captivate audiences to this day.

I am a die-hard Doors fan, and I firmly believe that Jim Morrison was an incredibly gifted songwriter. He had an uncanny ability to craft haunting melodies that could send shivers down your spine and enigmatic song lyrics that left you pondering their meaning.

However, I must admit that much of what he wrote for the page seemed somewhat half-baked. While it's possible that he might have developed into a writer of some sort after his music career came to an end, we can only speculate based on the evidence he left behind.

It's important to note, though, that most of what is collected here are unfinished notebook jottings. Despite this, there are still some truly excellent bits, and these are often the snatches of song lyrics that showcase his unique talent and creativity.

Overall, while Jim Morrison's written work may not be as polished as some might have hoped, it still offers a fascinating glimpse into the mind of a musical legend.

Some poetry has the remarkable ability to rescue me from a reading slump.

When I find myself in a rut, unable to engage with the usual books, turning to poetry can be a refreshing and revitalizing experience.

The words dance on the page, painting vivid images and evoking deep emotions.

However, it's interesting to note that some poets seem to have an excessive preoccupation with writing about sex.

While it can be a legitimate and powerful theme in literature, it's important to approach it with a discerning eye.

Sometimes, it can overshadow the other beautiful and profound aspects of a poem.

Nonetheless, poetry as a whole offers a rich and diverse landscape that can inspire, challenge, and ultimately help us break free from the doldrums of a reading slump.

I came late to The Doors, but I was hooked for many years.

I even worked hard to be stationed in Southern California, hoping to catch some of the residual magic that the Doors might have left behind.

I went to Venice Beach to see the giant mural of Jim Morrison on the building where he used to stay. That was all over thirty years ago.

To this day, I still listen to The Doors, and the lyrics often pop right into my head.

"The American Night: The Lost Writings" is not as lost as the title implies.

I wore out several cassettes of "American Prayer" in my younger days, and now as I read, the music and the beat seem to enter my reading experience.

There is an urge to follow the silent music by reading out loud.

In some sections, complete songs appear, like "The Soft Parade," "Celebration of the Lizard," and "Run With Me."

One section, entitled "The Hitchhiker," is written as a screenplay draft.

It involves murder and an unbalanced murderer, who seems to be inspired by or the inspiration for "The End."

For me, there was a mix of the known and the unknown.

A great deal of the writing was well worth reading. I guess a few parts were fillers, but all in all, it was well worth the read.

Each line seems to be carefully crafted, carrying a depth of emotion and a unique perspective that is truly captivating.

As I read his works, I am drawn into a world of his own creation, filled with vivid imagery and profound thoughts.

The intensity of his poetry leaves a lasting impression, making me reflect on my own experiences and emotions.

It is as if he has the ability to touch the very core of our being through his words.

I am truly amazed by his talent and look forward to reading more of his poems in the future.

Poetry? Difficult to access?

This statement might hold some truth for many. Poetry often seems to be an elusive art form, with its unique language, rhythms, and imagery. The words in a poem are carefully chosen and arranged to convey deep emotions and complex ideas.

However, it doesn't have to be so difficult to access. With a little effort and an open mind, anyone can begin to appreciate the beauty and power of poetry. One way to start is by reading simple and accessible poems. Look for collections that are targeted at beginners or that cover a wide range of themes and styles.

Another approach is to try writing your own poetry. This can help you understand the creative process and gain a new perspective on the art form. Don't worry about being perfect - just let your thoughts and feelings flow onto the page.

In conclusion, while poetry may seem difficult to access at first, it is well worth the effort. By reading and writing poetry, we can expand our vocabulary, improve our creativity, and gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us.

The truth is that I didn't expect much from the poems of Jim Morrison. However, I was pleasantly surprised to get to know them and understand this great artist. His life is projected in these poems, which surely could have been famous songs in his repertoire.

Morrison's poems are like windows into his soul. They reveal his deepest thoughts, emotions, and experiences. Through his words, we can catch a glimpse of the turmoil and passion that defined his life.

Each poem is a unique piece of art, filled with vivid imagery, powerful language, and a sense of raw authenticity. Whether he is writing about love, death, or the human condition, Morrison's voice is always distinct and compelling.

Discovering his poems has been a truly eye-opening experience for me. It has allowed me to see a different side of this iconic figure and has deepened my appreciation for his artistry. I now understand why his work continues to resonate with so many people around the world.

Let me preface this by saying that I have a certain stance towards The Doors and Jim Morrison.

I do enjoy The Doors as a band, but when it comes to Jim Morrison himself, I have a distinct dislike.

This aversion towards Jim Morrison has most definitely had an impact on my enjoyment of this particular book.

And I fully admit that this is a personal issue on my part.

As someone pointed out in another review, the book basically reads as if a person is in a drug-induced state, attempting to be philosophical.

This is probably because that's exactly the case.

However, to be fair, as someone else also mentioned, these are just snippets of poems that were published after his death.

It's quite likely that they were not ready or perhaps not even intended to be published in the first place.

If you are seeking truly great poetry by a musician, poetry that reads as excellent in its own right, then Bob Dylan is my recommended choice.

His works have a certain depth and artistry that set them apart.
