Foi minha primeira leitura de Guimarães Rosa e, confesso, foi bastante difícil.

The orality, a remarkable feature of his writing, and also the vocabulary used at that time made the reading difficult for me. It was not possible to stop from time to time to check all the unknown words, mainly because many of them had been invented by him.

When it was possible to catch the rhythm, the reading flowed and the sonority that turned and tumbled escaped the verses.

This was a book of short stories, but I still don't feel sure to move on to his novels. Known for being grandiose in size and genius.

I found myself constantly struggling to understand the text, yet there were moments when the beauty of his language shone through.

The unique way he crafted sentences and the vivid imagery he created were both captivating and challenging.

Despite the difficulties, I am glad I took on this reading experience as it has opened my eyes to a new style of writing.

I look forward to the day when I feel more confident to explore his novels and fully immerse myself in his literary world.

This is a set of short stories penned by the author of `The devil to pay in the Backlands' in 1962. There are a total of 21 shorts, each typically around 10 pages long, meaning there are no overly long tales.

They seem to be centered around the 1960s or perhaps even earlier in Brazil. These stories are poignant vignettes that mainly depict the life and times of country folk. They are imaginative, yet not in a surreal or magical realism style. There are elements of Sartre and some of Marquez, but they are not particularly revolutionary. In nature, they are neither violent nor sexual.

The book sleeve features clever motifs or cartoons that summarize each tale under its title. In this manner, I'll rather brutally give you an idea of what to expect in each story (title: summary):

1. The thin edge of happiness: A boy visits the city margins and spots a turkey.

2. Tantarum, my boss: A leader forms a gang to kill Skinny.

3. Substance: Maria Exita, Sionesia, and flour.

4. Much ado: A pickpocket manages to escape up a tree.

5. A woman of good works: An old woman, her deceased husband, and son-in-law.

6. The Aldacious navigator: Four young sisters fabricate a story about travel.

7. Honeymoons: Is it a shotgun wedding?

8. A young man, gleaming, white: Is it a UFO?

9. The horse that drank beer: A murderous boss.

10. Nothing and the human condition: Uncle the landowner.

11. The mirror: Amar looks at his soul in the mirror.

12. Cause and effect: A cow escapes from her field.

13. My friend the fatalist: A fatalist vigilante.

14. No man, no woman: A youth's remembrance of 1914.

15. Hocus Pyschocus: Two plays are required.

16. The third bank of the river: His father leaves and lives on a river.

17. The Dagobe brothers: Bad brothers at a funeral.

18. The girl beyond: Nhinhinha becomes a saint.

19. Soroco, his mother, his daughter: He takes care of his insane mother and daughter.

20. Notorious: What does notorious mean?

21. Treetops: The return of the opening little boy.

Some quotes:

"it may be that the astute malignancy of the dark part of us is incomprehensively striving to deceive us, or at least to delay our scrutinising any truth."

"Could it be that... I had no soul? That what I had supposed to be my self was no more than animal survival, a few inherited features, unbridled instincts, strange passionate energy, a tangled network of influences, all fading into evanescence?"

I'm not usually a fan of short stories, but these were okay. Best of all, they didn't blend into a mess of similarity or, worse, predictability or formulaicity. It's worth a try.

The third margin of the river is the most beautiful story in the world.

It is a place filled with mystery and charm. The flowing water seems to carry with it the whispers of ages past, telling tales of love, loss, and hope.

The banks are lined with lush greenery, providing a peaceful and serene backdrop to the unfolding narrative.

As the sun sets, the colors of the sky reflect on the water, creating a magical and enchanting scene.

People come from far and wide to experience the beauty and wonder of this place, to listen to the stories that it has to tell, and to find a moment of peace and tranquility in their busy lives.

The third margin of the river is truly a special place, a place that will capture your heart and leave you with memories that will last a lifetime.

Hard to find, and easily my most valued book acquisition in recent history.

I was primarily interested in the title story of this collection. It's small, but it packs a resounding punch. The way the author weaves the tale is truly remarkable. The details are vivid, and the emotions are palpable.

I'm still working on the other stories, but I fully expect to be floored. Each one seems to have its own unique charm and depth. I can't wait to see what else this collection has in store for me.

If you can't find it, you could potentially borrow it. However, be prepared to do some begging, pleading, and maybe even a little blood-letting on your part (be forewarned). :P This book is that good, and people are reluctant to part with it. But if you manage to get your hands on a copy, you're in for a treat.

The short stories of João Guimarães Rosa are set in the central part of northern Brazil, in the Sertão region.

This is an underdeveloped area, far from urban centers, with a desolate environment and wild vegetation.

It is materially poor but culturally rich. Rosa draws inspiration from this cultural wealth for his stories.

The characters in his stories are often primitive, crude, and uneducated - untamed people who undergo certain transformations, often with the help of nature, which he glorifies and which serves as a trigger for reaching the transcendent.

In his modernized approach, the narrator, often unreliable, directly addresses the reader as a witness to the described events.

Using unconventional metaphors, neologisms, and unusual language use, he elevates these events beyond the ordinary, presenting them as fantastic and giving them a universal and mythical character.

His most famous short story, "The Third Bank of the River," is a parable with numerous interpretive possibilities.

In it, the father decides to live on the river in his canoe.

While spiritual interpretations and those related to the traditional role of the father are possible, the story also deals with the preservation of memory and the processing of personal loss.

The stories can be grouped according to the themes they explore.

Some focus on personal development, often influenced by nature.

Others show beauty in the awkward, repulsive, and terrifying.

There are also homages to childhood imagination and play, as well as stories that represent the mercilessness of Sertão.

Finally, there are fantastic stories that add an element of the supernatural to the mix.

Seo Rosa writes that it enlightens our minds, indeed!

Guimarães Rosa was (and still is) a very rare case in Brazilian literature. They tried to classify him into styles and -isms, but he managed to escape well from these human inventions of categorizing everything and produced an immensely human work with a universal foundation, even though he spoke about Minas Gerais. Other writers also did this, showing that the regional is also universal and transcends limits.

Rosa, not satisfied, also works on the Portuguese language itself, demonstrating how a language lives, breathes, grows, incorporates, and transforms. Even in Portugal, where the language has a greater unity, there are still accents and regional expressions. Imagine then a country of the dimensions of Brazil, where the Portuguese language spread deep into South America and became one of its greatest unifying elements, which even allowed the formation of the perception of this people as part of a nation, even though it incorporated various elements of Indigenous, African, European, and to a certain extent, Asian languages, given that Japanese immigration was significant.

Minas Gerais is still a connection center between the North and South, East and West of the country and has characteristic dialects called caipiras, which also demonstrate the history of Brazil, formed by a large poor population (compared to few landowners and owners of industries and trade) with little or no school education, and who, in the search to express themselves to be understood, express themselves as they can. After all, the information, once understood by the listener, regardless of whether the speaker uses the standard language or not, achieves its purpose.

The short stories that make up Rosa's work demonstrate all the author's ability to charm with his writing. And once the barrier of the form he used to compose his books is overcome, it is amazement and charm, stories and tales of children, of crazy people, of challenges, of difficult life, of the confrontation of the being with its "I" (ah, Clarice). I will not say that it was easy at first, even for me who am from Minas Gerais, but it was a discovery in some senses, a rediscovery in others, of the simplicity of this people, but also of the arrogance of a few, including those who abuse the unusual forms of the language to impose themselves, as some professions still do, like lawyers who write in a way that even judges cannot understand. This is when the language is a means to be used for communication, and not for the imposition of others over others.

Guimarães Rosa is a true enlightener of the soul and heart.

Guimaraes Rosa is a difficult author.

At times, his erudition is excessive and overly complicates his works.

There are brutal and some confusing short stories due to the use of symbolism that is inherent to the sertão and Brazilian regionalism, both of which I am equally unfamiliar with.

However, there are universal themes in what Guimaraes writes, like the first story in the book, a brutal generational story full of absurdity. And although in general all are short pieces, they are not easy to read just because of that.

He is the greatest Brazilian writer.

This is a truly great therapy, principally, the Mirror.

The mirror has long been recognized as a powerful tool for self-reflection and personal growth. It allows us to see ourselves as others see us, providing a unique perspective that can be both enlightening and transformative.

When we look into the mirror, we are forced to confront our physical appearance, our flaws, and our imperfections. This can be a difficult and sometimes painful process, but it is also an essential one. By facing our true selves, we can begin to make the necessary changes to improve our lives and become the best version of ourselves.

In addition to its physical benefits, the mirror can also have a profound impact on our mental and emotional well-being. It can help us to boost our self-esteem, increase our self-awareness, and reduce stress and anxiety.

Overall, the mirror is a remarkable therapy that has the potential to bring about significant positive changes in our lives. Whether we are looking to improve our physical appearance, enhance our mental and emotional health, or simply gain a deeper understanding of ourselves, the mirror can be an invaluable tool on our journey of self-discovery.
