I have a deep affection for books that bear a resemblance to a journal or a scrapbook.

When you combine this with the fact that it pertains to the authors and illustrators whose books I hold dear, and the additional aspect that their lives were intertwined with World War II, it results in an extremely captivating book.

Comprising just under 100 pages, it offers a swift reading experience.

Being written for children, it progresses smoothly, presenting sufficient historical content to be both engaging and educational.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and awarded it a full 5 stars.

It is most definitely a book that I will preserve for my grandchildren to discover and enjoy in the future.

These two individuals were not only highly successful and talented but also had a happy marriage, a great education, and had traveled to numerous different countries. They were the authors who created some of my favorite childhood books.

This book managed to capture their essence by incorporating photographs, their illustrations, and personal documents throughout its pages. It served as an extremely well-summarized biography, specifically tailored for kids.

Haha, in fact, I still find myself reading it to this very day. It holds a special place in my heart, not only because of the fascinating lives of the authors it portrays but also because of the nostalgia it evokes from my childhood. It's truly a remarkable book that I would highly recommend to anyone interested in learning about these two amazing individuals.

A captivating story unfolds about the daring escape of Margret and H. A. Rey, the brilliant minds behind the beloved Curious George books, from Europe at the very onset of World War II. The tale is exquisitely illustrated by Allan Drummond in the distinct style of George, transporting readers into a world that combines adventure and history. Complemented by numerous historical photographs of the Reys and the turmoil of wartime Europe, it offers a vivid and immersive experience.

While "charming" might seem an odd descriptor given the backdrop of war, this book is truly a beautiful tribute to the Reys. It is a fact that countless children may not have had the same level of excitement in their reading lives were it not for that "curious little monkey." The story not only showcases the Reys' courage and ingenuity but also serves as a reminder of the power of storytelling and the impact it can have on generations.

3.75 stars*.

The true story that lies behind H.A. and Margret Rey, the brilliant minds who penned the original Curious George books, is truly and ABSOLUTELY fascinating!

If you happen to read The Horn Book or have a deep affection for children's literature, then you are bound to love this account.

*This rating is carefully based on the balance between kid appeal and adult appeal.

To be more specific, I would rate it 3 stars when considering it solely as a children's book, as it may not have all the elements that would completely engage a young audience.

However, from an adult perspective, it offers a wealth of interesting details and insights, deserving a solid 4 stars.

It's a story that manages to bridge the gap between the two worlds, making it an enjoyable read for both children and adults alike.

The account of Hans and Margaret's escape from France and the arduous route they took until they finally reached America is truly breathtaking. Despite its appearance as a children's book, this story is, in fact, an engaging read for adults. It offers a unique perspective on a tumultuous period in history through the eyes of the creators of a beloved character.
