My parents and I were sitting in our cozy living room, engrossed in the TV movie that was skillfully adapted from this very book.

That movie had the remarkable feat of introducing the world to one of the absolute finest TV series that has ever graced our screens, namely, THE WALTONS.

I was completely smitten with the show and over the years, I have watched most of the episodes countless times.

During the pandemic, I embarked on a journey to watch all nine seasons once again, and it was truly a wonderful and nostalgic experience.

Somehow, despite my deep love for the show, I had never gotten around to reading the book on which that movie was based.

Thankfully, I have now rectified that oversight and I am extremely glad that I did.

If you have seen the film, you are well aware that it unfolds on a cold and snowy night when the father of the family fails to arrive home as anticipated.

Johnboy, the eldest son, is then dispatched to search for him.

Of course, the story is filled with many other captivating elements, and they all blend together brilliantly, just as any die-hard Waltons fan would expect.

For the most part, the movie adheres closely to the book, although there are some slight differences between the two.

And, as the author astutely points out in a brief foreword, the names of the characters had to be altered for the TV adaptation.

(Some of you may recognize these character names from the much earlier book and film SPENCER’S MOUNTAIN, in which the family first makes their appearance.)

I feel as though I am doing a rather poor job of truly capturing the enchanting mood and magic that resides within these pages.

If you have a passion for the TV series, this book is an absolute must-read.

And if you are not yet familiar with it, I wholeheartedly encourage you to change that.

In all likelihood, when I am in the mood for an extremely easy and nostalgically inclined read, I will probably pick up and read some of his other novels.
