This is a Prequel NOT a Sequel

I don't know why this work is listed as a sequel to Spencer's Mountain. In fact, it takes place beforehand. This is clearly evident when we look at the characters' ages. The kids who are present in Spencer's Mountain had not been born yet in this story, and some characters who had passed away in the later work were still alive here. Additionally, there were a few passages that seemed almost like copy/pastes from Spencer's Mountain, which was a bit disappointing.

The story itself was extremely simple. It really should have been just two chapters instead of being stretched out into a novella. It was an okay read, but it definitely didn't have the same captivating charm as Spencer's Mountain. The plot was too simple and felt rather redundant at times. There wasn't enough depth or complexity to keep the reader fully engaged throughout. Overall, while it wasn't a terrible read, it failed to live up to the expectations set by its predecessor.

Holy crap! What a quick read this is! It is effortless to go through, yet the care that the author put into writing it is truly evident.

After having seen the pilot movie and the TV series, it is extremely hard not to make comparisons. However, when taking this as a stand-alone text, the scenery, the characterizations, the plot, and the dialogue are all masterfully crafted. I don't see anything wrong with a bit of sentimentality.

Nevertheless, the one nickname of the daughter, "Patty Cake," was perhaps a little overdone. It seemed a bit too cutesy and might have detracted slightly from the overall tone of the story. But overall, this is a great read that manages to draw the reader in and keep them engaged from start to finish.

As a teenager in the 1970s, I had the opportunity to read several books about The Waltons. These books offered a different perspective compared to the TV episodes that I had also watched.

When I tuned in to watch the Christmas special, little did I know that it, along with the entire television series, was actually inspired by this very novel. It was only after reading a review that I became intrigued and decided to pick up the book. And boy, am I glad I did!

Even though the characters' names were altered in the TV series, I still found myself able to identify with them in the book. If my memory serves me right, the book and the TV movie didn't differ all that much.

This book had such a captivating hold on me that it was extremely difficult to put down. In fact, if I had been willing to stay up just a little past my bedtime, I could have easily finished it in one sitting. I am now definitely planning to check out the prequel, Spencer's Mountain. If you have a penchant for a heartwarming family holiday story, then this book is most definitely for you.

It offers a wonderful escape into a world of family values, love, and the magic of the holiday season. So, give it a try and let yourself be charmed by the story of The Waltons.

I am a huge fan of the television series. However, I have never read the source material until now.

I should state that I love the 1st season of the TV show. It was really captivating and engaging. But as the years went on, it unfortunately lost the plot and became less interesting.

This book, on the other hand, is very faithful to the descriptiveness of the author. He has an obvious love for the countryside and the nature surrounding the area where he grew up. The details he provides about the landscapes and the environment are truly vivid and make you feel as if you are right there.

Some of the characters in the book were a little more rough compared to their TV counterparts. I actually think they did well by toning down Tony a little for the movie. It made his character more relatable and likable.

Overall, this has been a very enjoyable read. It has given me a new perspective on the story and has allowed me to appreciate the author's original vision. I would highly recommend this book to both fans of the TV series and those who are looking for a good read set in a beautiful countryside.

From the very first time I laid eyes on "The Homecoming" while watching television as a small boy, it has held a special place in my heart as one of my all-time favorite Christmas films.

As the years passed by, I gradually became aware that this wonderful film was actually based on a book. However, it was not until now that I finally got around to reading it. And I must say, I cannot recommend it highly enough.

The theme of family and home, along with the love that binds them, is palpable on every single page. The story does have some differences compared to the film. For instance, the names have changed. Clay-boy, whom most of us are more familiar with as John-boy, and the family name here is Spencer instead of Walton. Nevertheless, the essence of the original source material has been beautifully captured.

It's Christmas time, and Clay Spencer still hasn't made it home yet, and a fierce blizzard is fast approaching. The oldest son, Clay-boy, is dispatched to search for his father and bring him back. It turns out to be quite an odyssey. Along the way, he encounters the sheriff, Ike Godsey, and Charlie Sneeds (who is under arrest for poaching). He also attends services at "the black church" and eventually ends up at the home of two elderly lady bootleggers. They give him a "recipe" and a ride home through the snow in a horse-drawn sleigh.

The book has a happy ending that feels completely natural and not at all forced or unreasonable. In fact, it left this reader with tears in their eyes. While Capote's "A Christmas Memory" (and the 1966 TV film with Geraldine Page) will always remain my absolute favorite Christmas story, this one comes in a very close second.

A quick and heart-warming read, this story is just right for tonight.

I've delved into too many mysteries that are filled with an abundance of evil, but this one is refreshingly different. It is simply full of goodness.

Despite the hardships of the Depression, there is a beautiful Christmas tree standing tall. At midnight, the animals bow down, adding a touch of magic to the scene. There is a turkey and gifts galore.

Even if in the coming week there might be nothing more than love to sustain them, this moment of joy and kindness is enough to warm the heart.

It reminds us that in the midst of difficult times, there is still beauty and goodness to be found.

This story is a gentle reminder that love and kindness can prevail, even in the most challenging of circumstances.

It's a story that will leave you with a smile on your face and a warm feeling in your heart.

It is truly fascinating to read about the remarkable differences between the present and the 1930s. The world has changed in so many ways. Back then, technology was in its infancy, and life was much simpler. People didn't have the instant access to information and communication that we enjoy today. Transportation was also very different, with fewer options and slower speeds. However, there were also some things that were better in the 30s. The sense of community was stronger, and people were more connected to each other. The pace of life was slower, and there was more time for family and friends. Overall, it's important to look back at the past and see how far we've come, while also learning from the things that were good about that era.

Earl Hamner's writing is truly like spun gold; it's as simple as that.

Whenever I pick up one of his books, I can almost hear his voice gently narrating the story.

His works have a unique charm that draws the reader in and makes them feel as if they are part of the narrative.

"The Homecoming" is a particularly great example of his talent.

It is not only a wonderful read for Christmas, when its themes of family and togetherness are especially poignant, but also a great choice for any time of the year.

The story is filled with memorable characters and heartwarming moments that will stay with you long after you have finished reading.

Whether you are a fan of Hamner's work or are new to his writing, "The Homecoming" is definitely a book that you should add to your collection.
