I am an extremely passionate fan of "Theater of the Absurd". Eugene Ionesco, in particular, is one of my all-time favorite writers within this genre of theater and literature. I delved into his works as well as those of others similar to him during a college course I took at Berklee College of Music, which seems like ages ago. "Rhinoceros" stands as a remarkable example of Theater of the Absurd. Just like all works of this genre, it presents a plethora of profound ideas to both the theater-goer and the reader of the book. Even though I read it over 30 years ago, this single book has had a lasting impact on how I perceive the world at times.

As a species, we often have a tendency to follow the crowd, much like rhinos do, even when it may not be in our best interest or that of society. When I look at the politics of our country today, I observe some disturbing parallels, especially from the more "Right-wing" political spectrum. I encourage you to read the book and form your own judgment. You might not end up agreeing with me, and that's perfectly fine! It remains a great read nonetheless.

But truly, I have an intense love for "Theater of the Absurd". This type of theater has also had a significant influence on my sense of humor. It is dark, it is deep, and it doesn't always present a flattering view of human behavior. However, that's okay! Sometimes we require such humor to recognize the weaknesses within ourselves, engage in some soul-searching, and then make changes and grow. Or perhaps not grow at all! As many plays of this genre suggest, people generally don't. (But I, being an optimist, am a bit different from this genre of humor.)

Absolute gold.

When I completed reading 'Rhinoceros', my initial reaction was rather a mix of feelings. There were certain aspects that I grasped quite quickly, yet for the most part, I had the impression that Ionesco was simply going on and on (please don't be too harsh on me). However, I recalled that he was associated with the Theatre of the Absurd. This led me to search for online articles about him. And boy, am I glad I did!

Ionesco can indeed be a challenging playwright if one lacks an understanding of his background and the concepts he explores. Going through the online analyses truly assisted me a great deal. It enabled me to follow his other plays even more effectively.

If you have an interest in plays or books from the 20th century, I would highly recommend giving this book a go. You might find yourself reading additional articles to better understand him, but in the end, you won't be disappointed.

"Rhinoceros" by Eugene Ionesco is a thought-provoking play that delves deep into several crucial themes.

Set in a small French town, the story unfolds as people start transforming into rhinoceroses. This strange and absurd phenomenon serves as a powerful metaphor for the various social and political issues of the time.

The protagonist, Berenger, finds himself in the midst of this chaos, facing the central conflict of whether to resist the pressure to conform and hold onto his individuality or give in like the others.

The play effectively critiques the rise of totalitarianism and the loss of moral values in society. It uses humor and satire to highlight the absurdity of ideological conformity and the erosion of individual freedom.

By presenting these themes, "Rhinoceros" raises important questions about identity, propaganda, and individual responsibility. It forces the audience to reflect on the human condition and the potential dangers of ideological extremism.

This play offers a timeless commentary that is still relevant today, making it a significant work of literature.

Rhinoceros has been reviewed earlier and separately.

The other two plays in question are considerably shorter. The Leader is a sharp political satire that delves into the absurdities and follies of our political systems and the way people blindly follow leaders without much thought. The Future Is In Eggs, on the other hand, is a social satire that explores the theme of man's desire for immortality through procreation. Even though I haven't read the first part of this play, the sequel stands on its own quite well. It can be understood and appreciated as a separate entity without relying too heavily on the first part for its meaning. The repeated use of the word "production" in the play is highly connotative. It reflects the materialism and selfishness prevalent in the modern world, where people are often reduced to mere role players, rather than being seen as whole human beings. The Leader effectively satirizes our political preferences and man's natural inclination towards senseless hero worship. Overall, I thoroughly relished this book. Ionesco's plays are richly multilayered and deeply profound, and I would highly recommend them to anyone interested in thought-provoking literature.

Wow.

How could it be that I never read Rhinoceros before? I had a college professor who recommended it to me, but I ignored her.

Regret doesn't quite describe how I feel now. However, at least I found it after all these years.

Rhinoceros is about conformity and uniformity in all their possible forms - political, social, cultural, commercial, religious, artistic: you name it - and how they can gradually emerge and overtake society before people notice; before it is too late.

The vivid imagery and fast pace of Ionesco's writing don't allow the reader to look away.

Two short plays complete this volume.

The Leader is a farce about sycophantic admiration that gives the impression of a surreal Bob & Ray sketch set in a totalitarian state.

The Future Is in Eggs or It Takes All Sorts to Make a World is a strange, funny tale of two families chattering across generations, which has the feel of an LSD-laced Hee-Haw sketch ending with a serious point about humanity.

Overall, this collection of plays offers a unique and thought-provoking exploration of various aspects of human nature and society.

Sometimes one does harm without meaning to, or rather one allows it to go unchecked. (p. 97)

The play can be anything. That's the beauty of absurdist theatre: it can convey numerous meanings to different people, yet its underlying current is a pessimistic view towards the human condition.

Because I believe I am firmly rooted and situated in the world I inhabit, I have interpreted "Rhinoceros" as a criticism against blind conformity. In the twentieth century, we witnessed two movements that led to the unnecessary loss of millions of lives: Hitler's Nazism and Mussolini's Fascism. People perished because the constituents of both dictators permitted them to act freely, even to the extent of genocide. It's similar to the rhinoceroses running wild, with no one paying attention. At the end, the last human being is fragmented and ambivalent: he desires to preserve his individuality, but he is aware that he is an outcast in a world dominated by rhinoceroses. His "I am not capitulating" thus sounds bitter rather than decisive.

It always pays to observe and think independently. Yielding to peer pressure or following popular trends is never beneficial in the long term. Souls are sacrificed for the sake of conformity, and this is particularly prevalent here in the Philippines.

This is my third encounter with it. I have a profound love for Ionesco, and Rhinoceros is truly a play that couldn't be more apt for our era. Congress is teeming with RINOS. These aren't the type of Republicans and conservatives that MAGA is fond of labelling as RINOS. Instead, they are RINOS straight out of Ionesco's imagination.

I relished reading it once more. However, what I truly desire is to witness it being performed, something I have never had the opportunity to do. I have seen The Lesson and, I believe, one other of his works.

Hopefully, this play will flourish in revival this year. (Though, most likely not in the place where I reside, which at best has a penchant for The Sound of Music.) The Theatre of the Absurd has now become a reality in our lives. It's as if the荒诞的情节from the play are playing out right before our eyes in the political and social arenas.

Ionesco's works have this uncanny ability to mirror the absurdity and chaos that exists within our society, making us question and reflect on the world we live in.

Very absurd yet very true.

Are those rhinoceros? It seems almost unbelievable at first glance. The sight of what appears to be rhinoceros in an unexpected place is truly mind-boggling.

One might wonder how they could have possibly ended up there. Maybe it's a case of mistaken identity, or perhaps there's a strange and unknown story behind their presence.

The absurdity of the situation makes it all the more captivating. It challenges our perception of what is normal and expected.

Could it be that these are not real rhinoceros at all, but some sort of elaborate hoax or optical illusion? The mystery deepens as we try to make sense of this strange occurrence.

Despite the absurdity, there is a certain truth to the fact that we are faced with this puzzling sight. It forces us to question our assumptions and look at the world from a different perspective.

Very absurd very true. Are those rhinoceros? Only time will tell the real story behind this strange and captivating scene.

I only ended up reading the feature play of this collection, which is "Rhinoceros."

Surprisingly, the more I read it, the more I enjoyed it.

Admittedly, a significant portion of the dialogue appeared to be unnecessary, and the reading process involved sifting through painstakingly detailed stage directions.

Nonetheless, the overall social commentary of the play was highly compelling.

I find myself curious, though, as to whether the metamorphosis that the civilians experience is not merely a statement about fascism and herd mentality.

To me, it seems as if the entire human-to-rhinoceros transformation draws a subtle allegory for the process of coming out and homosexuality during a time when it was both illegal and socially stigmatized.

This interpretation adds an additional layer of depth and complexity to the play, making it all the more thought-provoking.

It makes me wonder if the author intended this hidden meaning or if it is a subconscious reflection of the social context in which the play was written.

Either way, it has certainly piqued my interest and left me eager to explore more of the author's works.

Let's just say that I can still take plenty of things seriously. However, I am finding that I am having an increasingly hard time taking things extremely seriously. There are times when I used to approach everything with the utmost gravity, but now, there seems to be a shift. Maybe it's due to the changing circumstances around me or perhaps a personal evolution. I still understand the importance of being serious about certain matters, but the intensity with which I used to do so has lessened. I can still focus and give my attention, but the pressure to take everything to an almost obsessive level of seriousness is no longer there. It's a strange feeling, but one that I am learning to adapt to.

I couldn't find the individuals of Rhino, Leader, and Eggs.

So, I simply marked this collection of his plays.

I truly loved his plays!

They were so strange, yet at the same time, wickedly awesome.

Their uniqueness and the way they made me think and feel were truly remarkable.

Each play seemed to have its own world and characters that drew me in and held my attention from start to finish.

I can't wait to explore more of his works and see what other strange and wonderful stories he has to tell.

His plays have definitely left a lasting impression on me, and I highly recommend them to anyone who is looking for something different and exciting in the world of theater.
