„Tarkvinijos arkliukai“ is like a vacation novel, taking us to a certain Italian village, baked by the crazy heat. A group of friends has been vacationing there for not the first year already, but this time the vacations are completely uninteresting. In the mountains, near the village, there is a drowned man and his elderly parents who firmly refuse to sign the death certificate. And the group of friends makes it their entertainment and a justification for their meaningless vacations – they constantly visit the old people and bring them food. I don't remember if I have ever written about such boring vacations. The morning starts without having slept enough, cold coffee, buns, at least three Bitter Camparis, cigarettes, some kind of unclear love, constant quarrels and reconciliations, then the same food in the hotel every day, more reconciliations, visits to the old people, some kind of unclear wandering around the village, another three Bitter Camparis, meeting with the child's nanny because she always argues with the child's parents about the care, then again Bitter Campari, a cigarette, boredom, hoping for rain and trying to sleep... then everything starts again.

It's a completely boring novel, where it's not even possible to understand the main ideas. Neither about love there, nor about vacations, it's about nothing. I would just call it a novel of dialogues because there are a lot of conversations here, but they are senseless and boring. I would never want to go on such vacations with such boring and uninteresting people. It's better to vacation alone then. I don't find even one interesting character, not even one thread, just some kind of ambiguous love-hate, want-don't want. Maybe the only plus is that little bit of Italy and summer. I have a feeling that that drowned man was perhaps some deeper symbol that I didn't decrypt, but, to be honest, I wasn't even interested in doing that.

Most often in books I notice some kind of special meaning, I take away something more than just the twists of the plot, but this time I can only, like those vacationers, feel regret remembering them. Although I will read this and forget it.

Just finished reading the book for the second time.

The first time was ages ago. I felt like re-reading it after having seen, also for the second time, Cet Amour-là, based on Duras' relationship with Yann Andréa, her much younger "admirer and companion," someone who has written her daily for five years.

Jeanne Moreau plays Duras. It is definitely worth watching. Yann Andrés, whose real name was Yan Lemée, was a young philosophy student at Caen (Normandy) when he discovered Duras, having just read Les Petits Chevaux de Tarquinia (hence my desire to re-read it).

He relates that he fell in love immediately, abandoned his studies and started reading everything Duras has written. She did not respond to any of his letters for five years. Then, in 1975, she sends him a copy of a very short book of hers (36 pages) that had just been published.

It sounds like he was taken somewhat aback and he stops writing her for awhile. She sends him a number of other books, thereafter. He starts writing her again. That summer, he telephones her while she is in Trouville (Normandy). She asks him to come and visit. He comes and stays. He is her companion for 16 years (till she dies).

The storyline of the book is rather "simple," a group of friends who keep going to the same place, each year, for their summer vacation. What matters are the sentiments, the interactions, the love, hate, desire, dislike.... Definitely worth reading and the film worth watching.

The relationship between Duras and Yann Andréa is truly fascinating. It shows how love can develop in the most unexpected ways.
