It took me a bit to get more into this one, especially with what happens to Grandmother Hudson. I only remembered the main thing that happens to Rain and who ends up with, so it was almost like reading it for the first time.
The strength Rain had in the first two books is greatly diminished in this one. At this point the girl has lost so much that she lets others push her around. Victoria is an absolute tyrant in this one and really becomes scary near the end.
I liked the love interest, though I felt like he wasn’t quite careful enough and that things progressed much quicker than expected. And while this is set during a different time period, some of the things he stated made me roll my eyes a bit. He’s still pretty decent for a VCA love interest.
Things really picked up around the 75% mark, making it difficult to put this book down. I liked the realistic depictions of just how much more effort Rain has to make to situate herself in her new reality. It was nice that she kept in touch with her dad throughout the book. I’m glad that despite an outdated slur being thrown around (probably not as outdated at the time this was published), that there were people insisting on how Rain’s condition wasn’t a life sentence.
My only real qualm is with the situation with Brody. It’s pretty serious and she’s still worrying about stepping out of line over the secret? The remark about her name bringing despair in the beginning also made me roll my eyes a good bit.
Overall, I didn’t like this one as much as the others but it still ended up being pretty fun.
