Pandemic reading has been an interesting journey for me. Since March, I have re-read most of Kerouac's works. It has been a wonderful experience to revisit his unique writing style and the vivid worlds he creates.

Then, I came across Peter Beagle's "I See by My Outfit". It is a captivating tale of two young men who embark on a journey from the Bronx to San Francisco in the early 1960s, riding on motor scooters! The title is inspired by the Kingston Trio's joke about the song "Streets of Laredo".

The time period that Beagle writes about seems like ancient history. It was pre-Beatles, pre-Dylan, and pre-hippies. Peter and Phil are on a quest to find Martin and Gibson guitars, and they are evidently talented enough at playing folk music to be entertaining. The book has an innocent style that is quite different from Kerouac's. The vivid descriptions of crossing the desert and the cold nights are truly remarkable.

I haven't read any of Beagle's fantasy books, although I know there are many. He is clearly a gifted writer. I am really looking forward to reading his first book, "A Fine and Private Place", which was written when he was just 20 years old. I add this to the list of books that I wish I had read fifty years ago. As I turn 70, I am finally starting to figure out how to be 25 again through the power of reading.

The references in this work are dreadfully outdated. However, the interaction between the author and his friend remains humorous and extremely realistic.

I discovered that the musings in the afterward of this edition are especially charming. As the author ponders how his friendship has changed from the time when the book was written until his current, later years, it provides a touching perspective.

It is also a delightfully honest reflection on travel during one's youth. In that stage of life, it is effortless to romanticize the events of the past. Beagle's description of the actual misery and discomfort that frequently accompany youthful adventure is invigorating.

This is not the kind of book that makes you feel as if you missed out by not undertaking a similar journey in your early twenties. Instead, it is the sort of book that makes you glad that others embark on such voyages and document them. It leaves you with a hint of longing but mostly a sense of relief that it wasn't you.

And ultimately, it is a book that compels you to hold your friends closer, even when the harsh realities of life make it challenging.

I truly relished this book. The author has a poignant writing style that is utterly charming. At times, the prose may seem a bit excessive, but strangely enough, this only adds to the charm, making it feel as if an old acquaintance is sharing a story with you. It was with a heavy heart that I reached the end of this wonderful literary journey.

One of the few books I have read multiple times is truly a remarkable piece. Surprisingly, Beagle has become one of my favorite authors, despite the fact that his genre is fantasy, which is not typically my preferred genre. However, I regularly reread this book, as well as "Folk of the Air" by Beagle. I have also read "The Last Unicorn" and "A Fine and Private Place", although only once each.

"Outfit" has the added bonus of taking the reader through local areas such as Kansas City, Salina, Hays, Oakley, and Limon. I always find it fascinating to see places I know through the eyes of others. In fact, I could probably point to a quote on every page that I love. Here is just one example:

"The view opens out suddenly, and I realize that we are wobbling along a mountain road, narrow enough that I would hate to meet a fat firefly going in the opposite direction." Another quote that sticks with me is: "That might be the earth's purpose in the universe, after all, to be torn into other peoples' moons." These quotes not only add depth and beauty to the story but also make me think about the world in a different way.

Read this because it was listed in TLU as "other books by this author".

It's dated, for sure. However, it's a remarkable journal-like book that documents his observations as he and a friend embarked on a cross-country journey from NYC to San Francisco (or a place close to there).

I found it truly delightful. In fact, I have read it several times. But that was in the past when I didn't have such a large collection of books. This book offers a unique perspective on their adventure, filled with interesting details and personal insights. It takes the reader on a journey through different landscapes and experiences. Despite being dated, its charm and value still shine through. It's a wonderful addition to any book collection and a great read for those interested in travel and personal accounts.

A quick read that I truly relished.

It tells the story of two beatniks who embark on a journey across the country, traveling from New York to San Francisco on their scooters. Set in the 1960s, this account offers a unique perspective on that era.

Interestingly, it is the first book (?) published by Peter S Beagle, who is typically known as a fantasy writer. This non-fiction work showcases his versatility as an author.

The narrative is engaging and filled with vivid descriptions that transport the reader back in time. It provides a fascinating glimpse into the lives and adventures of these two individuals during a significant period in American history.

Overall, it's a captivating read that I would highly recommend to anyone interested in the 60s or in exploring different literary styles.

I absolutely loved this book and was truly sorry when it came to an end. The writing was simply amazing, filled with captivating descriptions and engaging storylines. The fun situations that the characters found themselves in added an extra layer of excitement to the narrative.

Even today, the idea of riding across the country on a classic scooter is an incredibly challenging one. I was particularly impressed with how the characters in the book planned everything according to the AAA Triptik. Interestingly, the Triptik is still available through the Auto Club, although in this modern age, everyone seems to prefer using their smartphones for navigation. However, as we all know, smartphones can sometimes fail us.

But even back in the early 60's, the Triptik had its limitations. It could leave you driving without any knowledge if a road was outside the strip map. This book serves as a great reminder that the journey itself is often more important than the destination. I am truly thankful that Powell's Book still had a copy of this wonderful book in stock, allowing me to embark on this literary adventure.

A 1964 road story unfolds, taking us on a journey with the author and his friend. They embark on a remarkable adventure across the U.S., traveling from the bustling New York City to the sunny Fresno, California, all on their trusty scooter motorcycles. It was a simpler era, a time long before the advent of cell phones and the internet. Peter and Phil encounter a diverse range of people along the way. Their friendly dispositions often lead them to be warmly invited into people's homes, where they share delicious meals and engaging conversations. However, the journey is not without its challenges. They have to brave inclement weather, face the frustration of scooter breakdowns, and even deal with the police. Through it all, the two friends keep their spirits high, engaging in back and forth jesting with routines they develop spontaneously. This captivating story is truly an enjoyable read!

Compared to Blue Highways, this alternative option falls short. Blue Highways is renowned for its unique charm and offers a distinct experience. It might have features such as scenic routes, less traffic, and a more laid-back atmosphere. However, this other option, while similar in some aspects, doesn't quite measure up. It may lack the same level of natural beauty along the way or have a less efficient layout. The facilities available might not be as well-maintained or extensive. Additionally, the overall ambiance might not be as inviting and relaxing. While it can still provide a decent journey, it doesn't possess the same allure and quality that Blue Highways does. It's like a good imitation, but not the real deal.

I read this book during my youth, and its romantic perspective of hitting the open road really appealed to my young mind.

The idea of freely exploring new places and having adventures was extremely captivating. It painted a vivid picture of a life full of excitement and discovery.

Even now, after all these years, it remains firmly at the top of my list of favorite books.

Its charm has not faded with time. Whenever I think of it, I am filled with a sense of nostalgia and a longing to embark on my own journey.

This book has had a profound impact on me and has inspired me to seek out new experiences and embrace the unknown.

It is truly a classic that will always hold a special place in my heart.

Lovely, lovely book. It is truly a gem that never fails to charm. The sweet nature of the story and the observant details within it make it a delight to read. Each page is filled with wonderful descriptions and engaging characters that draw you in and keep you hooked from start to finish.

The author's ability to notice the little things in life and bring them to life on the page is truly remarkable. You can almost feel as if you are right there in the story, experiencing everything along with the characters.

Whether you are looking for a lighthearted read or something more thought-provoking, this book has something for everyone. It is a book that you will want to read again and again, and one that will stay with you long after you have turned the final page.
