However, Beagle didn't just stick to the traditional depiction of the unicorn. In his book, the unicorn can be turned into a beautiful lady named Amalthea, which is also the name of a Greek deity. Amalthea has a love interest, Prince Lir, who is the adopted son of the king who captures all the other unicorns. Amalthea wants to free them back to the forest.

This is the essence of what this book is about. I'm withholding the other characters and events to avoid spoiling the fun for those who are planning to read it.
