Eve Levine, the former supernatural superpower, has defied all the norms. However, she has always been true to her word, not even once breaking a promise, not even during the three long years she spent in the afterworld. So, when the Fates demand that she fulfill a debt she had sworn to pay, she has no option but to comply.

For centuries, one of the most malevolent creatures in the ghost world has been unleashed upon humanity, evading every effort to recapture her. Now, it is Eve's task to catch this demi-demon called the Nix, who takes possession of the bodies of would-be killers and forces them to carry out their murderous deeds. This mission becomes deeply personal when the Nix targets those Eve loves the most, including Savannah, the daughter she left behind on earth. But can a rebellious witch succeed where a horde of angels have failed?

Unfortunately, this book did not meet my expectations. Eve spent a significant portion of the story grappling with how to be with Savannah. The romance was virtually nonexistent. There was an angel (whose name was eerily similar to Christophe, the love interest) who was constantly late and unhelpful. There was no explanation for this behavior. The ending was absurd. Once again, the angel failed to do what he was supposed to, and there was no clarification as to why. I fully anticipated a revelation that he was somehow in cahoots with the Nix. Then, the ending was a half-hearted bargain reminiscent of Hades and Persephone. I will be waiting for a while before reading the next book, but since it was one I had been looking forward to, I will eventually read it. Hoping that it will be far better than this one.

Haunted is the fifth installment in the Women of the Otherworld series. Once again, we are given a new perspective as the story is told from Eve's point of view. Eve is a quite likable character, and it was enjoyable to finally get to know her, despite the fact that she is dead. However, Haunted is my least favorite of the Otherworld novels thus far.

I have mentioned in my previous reviews of this series that one of the things I love most about Kelley Armstrong's writing is her ability to create a supernatural world that feels completely realistic. That's precisely why I had such a hard time with this story. The ghost world that Eve inhabits simply doesn't seem believable to me. I understand it may seem contradictory to love a story filled with witches and werewolves but not one with ghosts, but the fact that it took me three weeks to finish this book indicates that it didn't grip me.

As with all the other novels in the Women of the Otherworld series, Haunted is well-written. The main characters are interesting, and the dialogue flows smoothly. However, with all the dimension jumping, time travel, and random bit characters that kept popping up, the story never really came together for me. Nevertheless, for those who want to know more about Savannah's real mother, you probably don't want to miss Haunted. Although I do think this is one book in the series that could be skipped without missing too much. Even though this wasn't my favorite WotO story, I'm already onto Broken, the sixth book in the series, and am thoroughly enjoying it!

Terrible. The story was way too drawn out on the adventures. It seemed to go on and on without really getting to the point.

Moreover, it did not explain a very crucial aspect. Why was Trsiel never around when Eve had the Nix cornered? This lack of explanation left a big gap in the narrative.

It made it difficult for the reader to fully understand the dynamics between the characters and the overall plot. Without knowing the reason for Trsiel's absence, it was hard to make sense of Eve's actions and the situation at hand.

Overall, this aspect of the story really detracted from the enjoyment and made it feel incomplete.

TLDR:

3.5 - It wasn't a terrible read, nor was it amazing. It was entertaining and I had a good time reading it. However, I do think the plot was extremely flimsy. The book is only redeemed by the writing, the good pacing, the natural charisma and banter of Kelley Armstrong's characters, and the somewhat unhinged world building.

Look, I enjoyed it more than I initially expected. Do I think it's well-written and fun? Absolutely, but I also love the author and the series, so I'm more lenient towards this book's flaws.

To be clear, I love the rest of the series. I have a particular preference for the werewolf books, but I still enjoyed Eve's book.

HOWEVER

- Plot-wise, this book is a bit chaotic. I usually like Armstrong's smaller plots with random and standard steps as it makes the story feel very real. But in this case, there's no real investigation. The characters just conveniently move from one info dump to another.

- I don't think we should have seen the afterlife. The world built so far in the series was already quite extensive, but it wasn't overly crowded. The afterlife had a vague definition and remained a mystery. Here, it was both entertaining to see how randomly normal and suddenly unhinged it became, but it also lost some of its mystique.

- I like Eve, but this plot doesn't do her justice. She doesn't even really get to reconnect with Kristof (I felt their novella had more emotional impact).

- Some of the violent plots were a bit random and at times seemed like they were just for shock value. I understand the point of this story to some extent, but I feel like it didn't really need to exist.

Bonus points

- The mythology of the Nyx is really interesting.

- If you're a purist and want to read every book in the series, this one is still kind of fun. It reads fairly quickly and has a steady pacing that keeps you engaged.

- The fighting scenes are always really good.

I absolutely adored this book! I was completely smitten with Eve and Kris! (Spoilers ahead)

My sister first began pestering me to read this series about two years ago, but I resisted until just three weeks ago. And for the very first time in our lives, I have to admit that she was right and I was wrong! (Thankfully, she's not on here, so she's not likely to read this)

Although I have enjoyed the other stories, I found them to be a bit slow-paced. To be honest, the heroines have annoyed me a little. For example, in the first novel, Elena tells Clayton she doesn't want to be with him, but then she leads him on, sleeps with him, and gets annoyed when he takes it as her coming back. However, this was largely addressed in the second novel. And while I enjoy Paige, I found her slightly know-it-all nature and her inability to think badly of the coven quite irritating.

Eve, on the other hand, with her kick-ass personality, her all-encompassing love for her daughter, and her ability to see her own flaws, be annoyed at them, and desperately try to correct them, is so relatable. There were parts in this novel that broke my heart (like the community centre and the epilogue), parts that scared me (such as the psycho village - I would have just drunk that potion at the first sign of those men), and parts that made me happy (her and Kris). I didn't know what to make of Kris in the beginning, as he was the main enemy in Paige's first book, but I actually liked his character. I enjoyed his protectiveness of Eve while she did her thing (usually being relegated to the sidelines to watch), and their chemistry, along with his unending patience and love for Eve and his children, won me over.

I didn't find this book as slow as the others, although there were times when it did drag. I love Kelley Armstrong's writing style and story. So, on to the next book - hopefully, I'll enjoy it as much as this one.

This is the book that led me to abandon Women of the Otherworld. The fault doesn't lie solely with this installment. Indeed, a significant portion of it felt like filler, with chapters that meandered aimlessly. Part of the issue is that after five or more books with a similar formula and three characters who sound remarkably alike, it becomes tiresome. The series features different protagonists, but Armstrong lacks the skill to make it work, especially in the first person. Regardless of who is narrating, everything is written in the same voice.

Haunted centers around demi-demon/witch extraordinaire Eve Levine. I was initially excited as she seemed like she would be my favorite character. However, it felt like a complete betrayal of all we had learned about her in the previous books.

What strikes me most about this supernatural universe is the narrowness of Armstrong's world. It is extremely white and straight. The ideal of beauty is blond hair and blue eyes, which you'll encounter frequently. The world revolves around the US, and ultimate power lies with a Judeo-Christian male Creator. Even powerful women are incomplete without a man.

I gritted my teeth when Elena fawned over the controlling, possessive jerk. I rolled my eyes when Paige suddenly forgot about her adopted child and was willing to sacrifice everything for her boyfriend. So when Eve has to choose between her daughter and her lover, we can easily predict the outcome.

Ultimately, everything is resolved through convenient plot devices, but to reduce strong, independent, and devoted mother Eve to someone who abandons everything for the sake of romance, especially when presented as a ridiculous false choice? No, thank you.

Haunted is the fifth installment in this remarkable series. It is narrated by the captivating Eve Levine. This book is yet another wonderful addition to the collection. The story line is truly engaging, filled with twists and turns that keep the reader on the edge of their seat. The characters are brought to life in such a vivid way that it's impossible not to fall in love with them. Eve Levine, in particular, is a strong and complex character who adds depth and intrigue to the narrative. Her perspective allows the reader to experience the story from a unique angle. The author has done an excellent job of creating a world that is both spooky and enchanting. The details are rich and the atmosphere is palpable. Haunted is a must-read for fans of the series and anyone who enjoys a good paranormal mystery.

It holds a special place in my heart.

Every time I encounter it, a sense of joy and excitement fills me.

It could be a book that takes me on thrilling adventures, a song that touches my soul, or a place that makes me feel at peace.

No matter what it is, this favorite thing has the power to make my day brighter.

It is a source of inspiration and comfort, always there when I need it.

I cherish it deeply and will continue to hold it dear for a long time to come.

It is truly one of the most precious things in my life.

3 stars.

This book was way too long for a plot that could have most definitely been novella length instead of over 500 pages. It was easily my least favorite in the series as it really didn't add anything significant to the world or move the series along in any meaningful way. It was just a side quest following Eve, Savannah's mother. Eve was okay. She wasn't my favorite heroine, but she did grow on me by the end.

There wasn't really a proper romance in this. The guy, whose name I've forgotten because he was that forgettable, and Eve had history, but there was no chemistry between them at all.

This was a real slog to get through. I'm not even going to lie. There were just too many details and side tangents that weren't necessary. I'm only giving this three stars because we do get to see Jaime, Savannah, Paige, and Lucas, which was great. Also, the way Armstrong described the afterworld and afterlife was pretty cool. However, other than that, this won't be one I revisit upon a re-read of this series. On to book six!

The story delves into the afterlife of Eve, the mother of Savannah. In the previous installment, Eve sacrificed herself to liberate Lucas and Paige from the afterlife.

This book, while somewhat strange, also feels appropriate. Eve is reunited with Kristoff, and their past, undying love is reignited. The afterlife, or limbo, is depicted as a community of ghosts striving to let go of their former human lives. Eve undertakes a perilous yet adventurous mission that leads to heroism and eventually angelhood.

**** [To avoid spoilers] One must read the book to discover the details of Eve's adventures. They are thrilling even for a simple ghost!

The author reveals a different aspect of Eve, showing her kindness despite her reputation as an evil, defiant witch. Additionally, Kristoff Nast is a rebel in his own right and engages in a sport that is prohibited within the Cabel family. Can you guess what he does??

Ghost Eve is assigned a task by The Fates to track down a missing and murderous ghost.

What I really liked about this story was the interesting portrayal of The Fates and their underworld. It added a神秘 and captivating element to the plot. We also got to see a bit of Paige, Lucas, Savannah, and Jaime, which was a nice touch. Additionally, I feel like I have a better understanding of Eve now, although I still don't have a strong affinity for her as the lead character.

However, there are a few things that could have been improved. For one, I just don't care about Eve and Kris in the same way that I cared about Elena and Clay or even Paige and Lucas. Their relationship didn't seem as engaging or developed. Also, this book was quite dark, with a lot of talk about child murder. While this can add depth and intensity to the story, it might be a bit too much for some readers.

Overall, it was an okay read, but it didn't quite live up to my expectations.
