Deception Point is Dan Brown' third novel, and his last novel NOT featuring his celebrated character Robert Langdon. It reads pretty much like Brown's other books, which might best be described as "guilty pleasure thrillers written specifically to attract potentially lucrative offers from big-budget film producers." It reads a lot like a Michael Crichton knock-off: a completely implausible and ridiculously complicated conspiracy plot based on actual scientific research and theories populated with disposable cardboard characters and fueled with enough action and suspense to keep you reading even though you know it's basically the literary equivalent of junk food.

Verifichiamo gli ingredienti: mega complotto ai danni della società; gruppo di cattivoni che vogliono uccidere perché sì; eroi figaccioni che mostrano doti atletiche di un campione di triathlon; computers con misteriose scritte sullo schermo; missili sparati a caso (quasi quanto la cartaccia della brioche che si lancia al mattino, con la speranza di centrare il cestino).
Da ricordare - nel tripudio galoppante di scemenze - il passaggio del sottomarino e la pisciata in mezzo agli squali.
Al termine della lettura ci si sente più rapinati di uno scippo in strada.

الرواية كانت ممتعة بلا أدنى شك، ومشوقة في بعض صفحاتها، لكن كان هناك أمر وحيد أنقص
من استمتاعي بها، كم التشابه بين حبكتها وحبكة الحصن الرقمي، والتي قرأتها من مدة ليست بالبعيدة

في الختام ، وكما أقول دوماً، هذه النوعية من الروايات تُقرأ من أجل التسلية وتزجية الوقت، أما من
يريد أفكاراً عظيمة وقيماً سامية واقتباساتٍ رنانة، فلن يجد مراده وسيخيب أمله إذا ما قرأها.

Il fatto è che non volevo leggerlo, perché già lo sapevo che sarebbe stata una schifezza. Solo che era in offerta a soli 5 Euro. Mica facile trovare libri con questi prezzi stracciati di questi tempi. Mi sono lasciata ingolosire. E così me lo sono letto.

Un’accozzaglia di stupidaggini incredibili. Ve ne racconto una, tanto per darvi l’idea.

Immaginatevi due uomini ed una donna, i nostri eroi, nel bel mezzo dell’Artide: un freddo da paura, cui non sono neanche lontanamente abituati, dato che vi sono stati portati solo da pochi giorni o, addirittura, nel caso della donna, da poche ore, per mezzo di aerei che volano a Mach 3. E già il fatto che non siano rimasti secchi sul velivolo, perché, anche in questo caso, era la prima volta che ci salivano, è già notevole.

Comunque, torniamo al fatto. Sono sulla banchisa, morti di freddo, e tre uomini cominciano a sparargli addosso. Ovviamente, riescono a schivare tutti i colpi. I cattivi hanno sempre una mira che fa pietà. E i buoni hanno sempre capacità da contorsionisti ed un culo della madonna.

Poi al bellone del gruppo, perché, si sa, i buoni sono anche tendenzialmente attraenti e molto intelligenti (benché sfugga, effettivamente, come faccia una persona intelligente a ficcarsi in certi casini, ma sorvoliamo) viene in mente che sulla slitta c’è un pallone sonda. Lo fa gonfiare (sempre sotto il tiro dei nemici che, in teoria, dovrebbero appartenere a dei corpi superspecializzati e, quindi, ci si aspetterebbe che, quanto meno, con quel costa sovvenzionare tale tipo di addestramento, siano almeno in grado di centrare una sonda che non è esattamente piccolissima come bersaglio … invece no … col cavolo che la beccano) e si fa trascinare dal vento, assieme ai suoi due compagni, su e giù per le colline di ghiaccio, con sbattimenti vari contro i pendii.

A questo punto anche il lettore più credulone comincia a sviluppare qualche perplessità sul fatto che i tre civili, che fino al giorno prima vivevano e lavoravano in normalissimi uffici in zone a clima temperato ed il cui massimo sforzo fisico era stato quello di portare alle labbra una tazzina di caffè, possano ancora essere in buone condizioni. E invece sì. Stanno benissimo persino dopo che la piattaforma di ghiaccio su cui sono finiti si stacca dal corpo principale e precipita nell’oceano artico. E’ solo dopo un pochetto che, bagnati fradici, galleggiando sull’iceberg, denunciano un certo affaticamento e si chiedono come usciranno da tale critica situazione. E’ la fine direte voi.

Ma no. La bellona nonché intelligentona (eh sì, c’è anche la bellona, of course … altrimenti di chi si sarebbe potuto mai innamorare il bellone nel corso dell’avventura?) si rammenta di avere al fianco una piccozza. Ovviamente, durante tutto il casino precedente non l’ha mai persa e non le si è mai ficcata per errore in una coscia o in un occhio … è una piccozza disciplinata questa, che si comporta assai meglio di quegli incapaci dei corpi speciali e aspetta con pazienza che venga il momento di essere adoperata, senza intralciare. E cosa fa la bellona? Batte con la piccozza sul ghiaccio il segnale di SOS in morse.

Ellosò cosa state pensando: “Ma figuriamoci, quando si ha bisogno di aiuto, non si trova mai nessuno neppure se si chiamano al cellulare tutti i numeri memorizzati in rubrica, nemmeno se si è in pieno centro di Milano e si urla sino a sputare le tonsille e questa qui si aspetta che qualcuno senta il suo SOS battuto con un piccozza su un iceberg in mezzo all’Artide? Ma dai …”

E invece sì. Lo sente un sottomarino che, guarda caso, passava proprio lì sotto. Il sottomarino se ne andava per i cavoli suoi, per scopi del tutto estranei alla situazione critica che stanno vivendo i nostri eroi, ma passa proprio di lì nel preciso momento in cui la bellona batte l’SOS e, tra tutti i rumori che presumibilmente rilevano gli apparecchi di bordo, capta proprio la richiesta di aiuto.

Ecco, il tenore del romanzo è questo. Va riconosciuta la furbizia dell’operazione commerciale di Dan Brown. Questo romanzo, esattamente come Angeli e demoni è precedente al Codice da Vinci. Ovvero, prima del successo del Codice non li aveva considerati nessuno. Adesso si smerciano come il pane sulla scia dello scalpore suscitato da quest’ultimo. Eppure, nessuno di essi vale un centesimo bucato.

Meditate, gente, meditate.

نسبتا روان و جالب بود ولی یک جاهایی اش زیادی خیالی بود.مثلا این که رئیس جمهور آمریکا انگار کاری جز رسیدگی به ناسا و سرنوشت سه تا غیرنظامی نداشت!!و هی اتفاقی جان به دربردن های شخصیت های اصلی داستان منطق روایی نداشتند ولی خب در این سبک کتاب ها عنصر اتفاق نقش پررنگی دارد.
آخرهای داستان یک غافلگیری خیلی جالب داشت هرچند آن هم خیلی منطقی نبود ولی واقعا آدم را حیرت زده می کرد.
پرداخت خوبی داشت ولی شخصیت پردازی ها ضعیف بودند.
به عنوان سرگرمی کتاب خوبی بود و ترجمه ی روانی هم داشت.

This a fun read. Better than a couple of the Langdon novels. If you are reading Brown only for Langdon, you are missing out!

Mroczne stonogi z kosmosu.

Amerykańscy naukowcy odkrywają dziwny meteoryt. W jego wnętrzu znajduje się coś, co może zburzyć cały dotychczasowy porządek świata, a przy okazji umożliwić dotychczasowemu prezydentowi kolejną kadencję – jego przeciwnik jest bowiem bardzo negatywnie nastawiony do NASA, którą uważa za bezużyteczną i otwarcie o tym mówi. Gdyby teraz agencja odniosła spektakularny sukces, lud na pewno doceniłby wsparcie obecnego prezydenta dla badań NASA.

Walka o stołek prezydencki z dowodami na życie pozaziemskie w tle. Spisek, komandosi-mordercy, walka na śmierć i życie – cały Brown. Nie do końca moje klimaty, ale czyta się przyjemnie.

This was read at the tail-end of my brief Dan Brown phase (let he who has never enjoyed an airport-bookstore novel cast the first stone), and by this point I was getting a little tired of Brown's storytelling formula. And by "formula", I really mean "formula". Here it is:

How To Make A Guaranteed Bestseller in Fifteen Minutes or Less
-1 intelligent, bookishly handsome man who in no way is supposed to be Dan Brown of course not why do you ask
-1 really intelligent, preferably foreign woman who has an IQ of like a billion but the important thing is she is hot and has very low standards as far as men go (see protagonist)
-5 exotic locations, more if you prefer
-25 full pages of technical/historical/whatever background information that serves only to show the audience how goddamn smart the author is
-3 conspiracy theories found after 5-minute Google search
-8 death-defying situations and improbable escapes
-1 villain of cartoon-level evilness
-3 OMG SO SCANDOLOUS revelations that will ROCK THE FUCKING WORLD

Blend until well combined (or not so well combined, whatever) bake at 350 degrees until it can be adapted for the screen in five minutes or less, serve hot to adoring public on plates made of $100 bills.

Multe i se pot reproșa lui Dan Brown dar nu și aceea că nu ar fi un excelent narator și un autor extrem de bine documentat.
Nu aș fi crezut niciodată că, pe parcursul acestei lecturi, voi căuta cu multă curiozitate pe internet informații suplimentare despre celebrele Delta Force, NRO, PODS, NASA, despre ciudățeniile pomenite din petrologia, geologia sau biologia marină, ori despre Insula Ellesmere, Arctica și Groapa Marianelor.

De departe cel mai digerabil roman al său, în ceea ce mă privește, chiar dacă nu e (și nici nu cred că își propune a fi) nimic mai mult decât o lectură de vacanță, destul de plină de clișee hollywoodiene.

Another fast-paced thriller dealing with the NSA from Dan Brown. I found this novel to be right on par with Digital Fortress and thought that it was a very well-written thriller. From start to finish Deception Point takes the ball and runs with it like any other Dan Brown thriller. I like that the plot moves around in scenery from the Arctic to Washington, DC and a few points in-between keeping the action flowing and the characters moving around instead of being static in one place. The characters are well written and believable and, in this book, Brown has written another very strong female lead character as he also did in Digital Fortress.

I don't know why these two novels didn't get the press that the Robert Langdon novels did, perhaps it's because they deal with the NSA instead of having a religious based theme that stirs up controversy. Whatever the reason, if you enjoy Dan Brown's Robert Langdon novels or are just a fan of a good thriller, I'd recommend giving Deception Point a chance.
