This review also appears on my blog, Read-at-Home Mom.

The Whipping Boy is a captivating historical fiction novel. It's a slim volume that won the Newbery Medal in 1987. The story revolves around Prince Horace, affectionately known as Prince Brat. He has a penchant for misbehaving on purpose just to witness his whipping boy, Jemmy, endure the punishments. When the prince decides to run away and Jemmy tags along, they unfortunately encounter some criminals. In order to outwit these ne'er-do-wells and make their escape, they are forced to switch places.

Among all the relationships depicted in children's books, the one between the prince and his whipping boy is truly extraordinary and fascinating. While the story is primarily an adventure, following the two boys as they strive to outsmart the criminals, it also delves into many crucial themes such as wealth, status, education, and justice. The prince, despite being rich and powerful, has neglected his studies and cannot read or write due to his constant misbehavior. On the other hand, Jemmy, who has nothing to take for granted, has absorbed the lessons meant for the prince and is fully literate. Inside the castle, the prince's crown gives him authority, but outside, Jemmy becomes the more powerful one because of his literacy skills. When the boys trade places, it's not just a simple plot device like in The Parent Trap. Instead, it serves to illustrate the often arbitrary social constructs that divide the haves from the have-nots. The reader implicitly learns that there are different forms of wealth, and that the tables can turn suddenly when circumstances change.

There are numerous other aspects of this book that make it outstanding. Kids will surely delight in seeing Prince Brat face the consequences of his actions after Jemmy has suffered so many beatings on his behalf. However, they will also enjoy the prince's journey towards redemption. Each character the boys meet on their way back to the castle is vivid and memorable, and their clever plan for escaping their captors provides a highly satisfying conclusion.

This book reminds me a great deal of The Tale of Despereaux, and I believe fans of one will find equal enjoyment in the other. It's a short and engaging read with plenty of action, making it an ideal choice for reluctant readers who might be intimidated by longer books. I appreciate Sid Fleischman's straightforward writing style, and although I could anticipate the happy ending from the start, the path he took to reach it was thoroughly enjoyable.

Cute, but WHAT WAS PRINCE BRAT’S NAME???

This simple yet curious question has been on the minds of many. The idea of a prince being called "Brat" is quite amusing and makes one wonder what his real name could be. Maybe it's a nickname given to him due to his mischievous nature or perhaps it's a play on words.

We can only imagine the possibilities. Could his name be something regal like Prince Alexander or Prince Henry? Or maybe it's a more unique name like Prince Maverick or Prince Zephyr.

The mystery of Prince Brat's name adds an element of intrigue to his character. It makes us want to know more about him and his adventures. Will we ever find out what his real name is? Only time will tell.

Synopsis:
Jemmy is the prince's whipping boy. Whenever the prince misbehaves, Jemmy gets punished. Tired of this injustice, he plans to run away. However, before he can, the prince decides to run away first and drags Jemmy along. Soon, they are kidnapped by two highwaymen who mistake Jemmy for the prince. Now, with their roles reversed, Jemmy has the power to decide whether the prince will be whipped or not. Will he help the young prince return home? Or will he take this opportunity to escape?

Personal thoughts:
This book is simple yet entertaining. It's a quick and easy read. I recall reading it during elementary school and enjoying it then. Recently, upon rereading, it seems that it might be more interesting to kids than adults. I was glad to see how Jemmy's character develops throughout the book. At first, all he can think about is his chance to get away. He has some concerns for the prince, but only because he's afraid that the King and others will think he helped the prince get kidnapped. Over time, though, he begins to feel more empathy for the prince. I also really liked the fact that eventually, Jemmy realizes all the things he would be giving up by going back to be a rat catcher in the sewers. His life as a whipping boy is far from ideal, but he also understands that the education he has received might deserve something better than the scavenging life he had before.

I think this book was rather confusing at certain points, yet it was also extremely adventurous.

My favorite character is undoubtedly the whipping boy, also known as Billy. Billy is mean and ruthless, but there is something about him that I find quite funny.

My favorite part of the story is when Jemmy and Prince Horace attempt to escape from Bill and Cutwater. It is a thrilling moment that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Billy is my favorite out of the two antagonists. He has a certain charm that makes him stand out.

This book isn't very lengthy, but in a short amount of time, the characters manage to go to a lot of places. It's amazing how much action and adventure is packed into such a small space.

I can't believe Jemmy was set free from Prince Horace. It was a surprising turn of events that I didn't see coming.

I also can't believe Prince Horace never went back to his palace. What will happen to him? Will his father or the knights ever find him?

I truly wish there was a second book. I want to know what happens next to these characters and how their stories unfold.

The idea behind the whipping boy is perhaps one of the more peculiar footnotes in history.

How that poor child must have felt is truly beyond my comprehension.

Nonetheless, this story is filled with a great deal of humor.

It is both entertaining and adventurous as it describes a time and place that might exist only in the author's imagination.

Yet, there is still a certain element of truth to it all.

We can only wonder what life was really like for the whipping boy and how he coped with his unusual role.

Perhaps this story serves as a reminder of the strange and often unjust ways of the past.

Despite its strangeness, it has managed to capture the imagination of readers and remains an interesting and engaging tale.

I truly have a great affection for this book.

It is a real page-turner, allowing me to finish it in a relatively short period of time.

The author has done an excellent job in creating the characters. They are vividly portrayed and have their own unique personalities and characteristics.

As I was reading, I couldn't help but think that this book would make an outstanding movie.

The story has all the elements that would translate well onto the big screen, such as an engaging plot, interesting characters, and exciting scenes.

I can just imagine how the movie would bring the story to life and captivate the audience.

I would definitely look forward to seeing it if it were ever made into a movie.

Reading about a spoiled prince and his whipping boy offered a rather distinct reading experience. It truly made me ponder whether such a thing could actually occur. After all, what is the significance of punishment when one doesn't bear the consequences oneself but instead has others do so? I suppose that was, to some extent, the essence of the story - to demonstrate that one must take responsibility for one's actions and not shift the burden onto others.

The adventures the boys embarked on while fleeing from the two bandits were thrilling. They constantly managed to escape in unexpected ways. For instance, the dancing bear scared the bandits away, or at the end, the rats came to their rescue. That was truly amazing. It added an element of excitement and unpredictability to the story, making it all the more engaging and enjoyable to read.

I chose this book for a grade 3/4 novel study to integrate my literacy unit with my grade 4 Middle Ages unit. After some online research, I found this book to be a nice cross-curricular novel. During a recent snow day, I had the chance to read the whole thing to start planning my unit.

I believe the book is suitable for a grade 3/4 class (probably grades 3-6), but the Middle Ages connection isn't as accurate as I thought. For instance, the book mentions Lords' white wigs, which weren't introduced until the Renaissance. The illustrations also show clothing from that period instead of the Middle Ages. Although these details are minor and most students wouldn't notice or make the connection, if a novel is promoted as "Medieval Times," it should at least try to be accurate.

That being said, I will still use this novel for my novel study. However, I will focus more on the character traits and development rather than the society and culture the characters live in. My class also has difficulty with kindness and consideration, so highlighting Prince Brat's behavior could lead to a good discussion and lesson. The chapters are short, so students feel successful when they can complete them without too much trouble or time. I also like Prince Brat and his transition and growth, which is well-written despite the novel's brevity.

This book loses points in my review because of its historical inaccuracies. Usually, this isn't something I'm overly concerned about, but it's important when looking for a cross-curricular connection. Nevertheless, as I mentioned, the story is enjoyable and has other strong aspects.
