A great mystery; the characters were well developed and the plot was well constructed. I liked the small town atmosphere that the author created.

The book was a real page turner, not full of action, but the mystery was well crafted and kept my attention. The characters weren't as well rounded as Sharon and the Gang, but were decent enough for a standalone book.

The conclusion was rather anticlimatic and fell flat, especially if you're used to reading Sharon McCone shootouts and I felt the suicide near the end of the book served no purpose except to up the gore factor. Abusive men don't sudden get "conscience" and shoot themselves.

The title of this book is a bit misleading. My expectations were to read a blood and guts tale of a front-line medic working in hot war zones. Instead, it was a story of a junior nurse working in a fairly calm military hospital in the USA,. It could have been the story of almost any hospital-based nurse - everyday drudgery interspersed with complex relationship issues and the occasional medical drama.
I really liked the author's empathetic style and his description of the various characters he met on his fairly short medical journey.

First in new series. Like this better than the Sharon McCone mysteries by this author.

I was not ready for this to end. If you are a fan of Anita Blake and any of the Darynda Jones novels, you will ABSOLUTELY LOVE this book. The story builds with twists that you do not see coming. I hope to learn more about Lukas and Emma. There are so many ways this series can go so I'm committed to the ride. Just amazing you will not be disappointed.

With thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for my ARC.

I really enjoyed this book, it was a strong beginning for the series, with both likeable and horrid characters, the fun is working out, who is who.

Emma Bellamy is one assignment away from making Detective when she’s assigned to Supernatural Squad, and it’s her worst fear becoming true, because nobody wants to be assigned to Supernatural Squad.

While attempting to solve the mystery of a missing werewolf, Emma meets a mysterious vampire, manages to get herself killed and wakes up in the morgue.

An excellent read, I’m looking forward to the next title in the series.

This was. lot of fun to read! I see that the author has several other books out and I’m going to have to read something else by her.
The story is a fairly straightforward one of solving a murder. The main character is new to the supernatural world and you see everything fresh through her eyes. She’s a sympathetic and likable character. The strength of the book is in its fast pace and interesting characters. If you like your urban fantasy light and without too much romance (there’s certainly romantic possibilities hinted at though) this would definitely be one to try.
My only regret is not having tried this author sooner!

In a brand new series from Marcia Muller, she told us a cryptic tale in Point Deception, the first book in the Point Deception trilogy series. In this mystery, we were introduced to Rhoda Swift, the local deputy in this fictional Sonoma County town. She was haunted by the thirteen-year-old murders of two families that haven't been solved. On the anniversary, she believed the anniversary had created a new crime spree, when a local woman's dead body turned up on the shores of Point Deception. For Guy Newberry, a best-selling author who had cracked the mysteries of infamous towns, they would discover the shocking truth, while the connection between them grew stronger.

This isn't part of any of her other series. Not bad. Not as good as the earlier McCone books, but better than the last 10 years' paint-by-numbers ones.

I enjoyed the murder mystery at the heart of this book; the sleepy, suspicious, haunted oceanside town; the family of officers; and the back and forth perspective between journalist and cop. This book managed to keep me on the edge of my seat!
