Great, nearly breathless tale of the vertices of a lovers' triangle" Reed, Louise Bryant, and Eugene O'Neill. Then, that triangle and the two key pieces of Louise and Reed land in the Communist Revolution and both die young, painfully and tragically for it.
If you open this, you will meet Detective Rhoda Swift. Her small Northern California community experienced genuine horror 13 years before this book opens when someone mass murdered several people in the fall of the year. The small town never fully recovered, and Rhoda went on a drinking drugging binge that lasted years. Today, she is back as a detective, but her control over her world is fragile at best.
Ben Newberry he is a freelance writer who explores troubled towns to see why they began to disintegrate. His most recent book dealt with a small Alabama town that was on the cusp of falling apart. His publisher has sent him to the small Northern California town where Rhoda Swift lives to essentially dissect its difficulties and write about its status as a crumbling community. The town simply never recovered from the mass murders of years earlier.
He arrives close to the anniversary of the killings, and he's just in time to learn about the death of a young woman who had been in the town as a little girl when the murders occurred. You can read this to determine whether her death connects to those earlier killings. As for Rhoda Swift, she's convinced there is a connection. She enlists the help of the freelance writer in a rather unorthodox and hard-to-believe move to solve the crimes.
This is not a great or memorable book after the manner of the Sharon McCone books. It's short and it's decent, and you will largely enjoy it if you start it. The connection between the detective and the rider is interesting, but the author ensures that it doesn’t overpower the plot.
I am absolutely amazed at how much I loved this book! I have been looking for a new series since many of my current favorites are ending. Brimstone Bound has catapulted Helen Harper's series to my followed series and made my TBR pile much higher.
A young rookie cop is assigned to work with the "usual" supernatural characters that live just out of sight of human Londoners. This job is not on her bucket list but she needs the work experience, so on duty she goes. By the end of her shift, she's dead! WTH!!! But she doesn't stay dead for long and now she has a brand new list.
A really good entertaining story line that is still light hearted enough to keep you chuckling as this young police woman finds herself in a world she has no clue about.
Absolutely amazing! I was a little hesitant at first to read. I am a big fan of urban fantasy, but find first person novels hard to relate to. That was not the case this time. Harper did a wonderful job right from the get-go. Emma is a strong female character and I loved the suspense. The ending was amazing and I am fascinated by the secondary characters the the relationships that developed with Emma. I highly recommend this book.
I have read a lot of books about World War II but this is the first set in New Orleans! It was an interesting and engaging read and I loved the main character, for all her flaws. A fairly short book, this is a good introduction into a genre which brings together fiction and history.
I loved the world-building in an alternate London it was vivid and well written. The MC is a kick-ass heroine who is very close to completing training to become a full fledged detective.
I really enjoyed the original and well done take on the supernaturals in this world. It keeps some of the elements generally expected while adding new and intriguing elements. It was very well written
I feel this is a fantastic beginning to a new series. I am very excited for the next book.
Emma and Lukas have a fantastic team dynamic and are engagingcharacterswith great dynamics.
The book has a well paced stiry arc that keeps you interested. I will definitely be reading more from this author.
I received this book from NetGalley for an honest review.
