The name and the cover of the book were such that I would not have otherwise been drawn to it if I hadn't found it in the university library's café. It turned out that it was a traveling BookCrossing book. I took it with me, even though the back cover text was annoyingly adjectival. Now, after two years of keeping it, I finally managed to read the book to the end.

The book consists mainly of short episodes that tell glimpses of the life of a Cuban-American cleaning lady in the United States. I also classified the novel as a short story collection because the episodes can be read as standalone short stories (and that's how I've always read a few from time to time). The main characters became so familiar that now, after two years of acquaintance, it felt almost a bittersweet feeling.

I noticed that I often returned to the book when I needed some "brain candy" entertainment. The text is indeed that delicious, easy and quick to read, and neatly organized in a pleasant way. When reading, it felt as if one had gone for coffee with someone and listened to their storytelling.

A really nice and warm-hearted opus despite its rather plain appearance.

Beautiful and enchanting.

Pobre Lydia, a name that might initially evoke a sense of pity. But beneath that lies a remarkable story. Despite her circumstances, she manages to craft a wonderful life for herself.

Her journey is a testament to the fact that it isn't money that makes you truly happy. In a world often fixated on material wealth, Lydia stands as a shining example.

She finds joy in the simplest of things, in the warmth of a smile from a friend, in the beauty of a flower blooming in her small garden.

Her life is filled with love, laughter, and a deep sense of contentment. She has learned to appreciate the present moment and to make the most of what she has.

Lydia's story is an inspiration, reminding us all that true happiness can be found within, regardless of our financial situation.

It is a lesson we would do well to remember in our own lives.

I really enjoyed this.

It was an experience that brought a lot of joy and satisfaction.

The details and the way it was presented were truly remarkable.

I found myself completely engaged from start to finish.

It had a certain charm that made it stand out.

The emotions it evoked were genuine and palpable.

I could feel the passion and effort that went into creating it.

It was like a little escape from the ordinary, a moment of pure pleasure.

I will definitely remember this and look forward to more like it in the future.

It has left a lasting impression on me and I'm grateful for having had the opportunity to experience it.

A tiresome montage about a Cuban woman in New York.

It seems to unfold at a glacial pace, as if every frame is reluctant to move forward. The story of this Cuban woman, perhaps filled with hopes and dreams, is presented in a way that makes it almost painful to watch.

The scenes drag on, lacking the energy and momentum that could have made it an engaging and captivating piece.

One can't help but feel a sense of frustration as the montage plods along, with no clear direction or purpose.

It's as if the filmmaker was more interested in creating a mood or atmosphere than in telling a compelling story.

Overall, it's a disappointment, a slow and tiresome montage that fails to leave a lasting impression.

Maybe with a bit more editing and a stronger narrative, it could have been a better piece, but as it stands, it's just too slow for words.

DNF - Good but not great.

The writing in this book is truly beautiful. The author has a remarkable way with words, painting vivid pictures and creating a captivating atmosphere. However, after reading 100 pages, I find myself still not fully hooked.

There are just so many good books out there waiting to be discovered, and unfortunately, I don't feel that this one is worth devoting a significant amount of my time to. It's not that it's a bad book by any means, but it simply doesn't have that certain something that makes me eager to turn the next page.

I'm sure that there will be someone out there who will absolutely love this book. Everyone has different tastes and preferences when it comes to reading, and perhaps this one will strike a chord with someone else. But for me, it's a case of good but not great.

A Tugging, Poignant Account of the Immigrant Experience in America

The immigrant experience in America is a complex and often heart-wrenching one. It is filled with hopes and dreams, but also with challenges and hardships.

Immigrants leave their homelands, leaving behind familiar faces, cultures, and ways of life. They embark on a journey to a new country, filled with uncertainty and the unknown.

Once in America, they face language barriers, discrimination, and the struggle to find work and a place to call home. They must adapt to a new way of life, learn new customs and traditions, and build new relationships.

Despite the difficulties, many immigrants persevere and find success in America. They contribute to the country's economy, culture, and society, and make it a more diverse and vibrant place.

Their stories are a testament to the human spirit and the power of perseverance. They remind us that America is a nation of immigrants, and that the immigrant experience is an important part of our history and our future.

I have a great passion for other works created by this author. However, when it comes to this particular piece, it falls short in comparison.

The characters within this work simply lack the captivating charm and depth that one would expect. They seem rather one-dimensional and fail to truly engage the reader on a profound level.

While the author has demonstrated remarkable talent in their previous writings, this work unfortunately does not live up to the same standard. It is a disappointment to see that the characters, which are often the heart and soul of a story, are not as interesting as they could have been.

Despite this, I still hold out hope that the author will continue to produce great works in the future and perhaps redeem themselves with a more engaging and well-developed cast of characters.

Lydia, who hails from a prosperous family in Cuba, feels a profound sense of disappointment when she has to work as a cleaning woman to support her family in New York.

Through a series of vignettes, we gain insights into Lydia and the people in her life, with all their flaws and imperfections.

This work offers a thought-provoking exploration of the Cuban American experience, delving into the lives of emigres and their children's challenges in grappling with identity, as well as universal themes such as regret, love, and poverty.

The book is presented in a non-linear fashion, which means it is a slow and steady read, and may not appeal to all readers.

Even fans of this type of fiction might find the author's Pulitzer-winning work more enjoyable.

Nevertheless, it is recommended as an additional purchase for those interested in exploring the Cuban American experience and the complex themes it encompasses.

Vähän tylsä mutta väkevä. This simple phrase holds a certain charm and mystery. It might describe a person who appears a bit dull on the surface but has an inner strength that is not immediately obvious. Or perhaps it refers to a situation that seems uninteresting at first glance but has a hidden power or significance.

It could also be used to describe an object or a place. Maybe it's a plain-looking building that houses a great deal of history and character. Or a seemingly ordinary book that contains profound wisdom and inspiration.

In any case, "Vähän tylsä mutta väkevä" reminds us that there is often more than meets the eye. We should not judge things too quickly or superficially, but rather take the time to look deeper and discover the hidden qualities and strengths that lie within.
