\\"Tis the season - the season for cozying up on the couch, indulging in Christmas movies, and, of course, delving into this year's \\"Christmas book.\\"
I've had this particular book sitting on my shelves for numerous Christmases. This year, I finally decided it was time to pick it up and give it a read. I purchased this book before I became a member of Goodreads, so it was a bit of a random buy.
I completed this story in the early hours of this morning and then made my way downstairs to log it into my reading challenge. Out of curiosity, I started reading all the reviews of this book. There's really nothing I can say or add to the already beautiful reviews.
Before you decide to buy or borrow this book, it would be a good idea to read several of the reviews. The story isn't quite what I expected based on the title, but I still found the storyline to be thought-provoking and well-written. In fact, at the beginning, it took me a few pages to get accustomed to the author's writing style. However, once I did, I was truly impressed by its eloquence.
All in all, I can say that this book is a real gem, and I'm extremely happy that I've held onto it all these years.
A Sad but Moving Book
This is a book that will touch your heart deeply. It tells a story that is both sad and yet, strangely moving. The characters are well-developed and you can't help but feel for them as they go through their trials and tribulations. The plot is engaging and keeps you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end.
The author has a unique writing style that makes the story come alive. You can almost see the scenes playing out in front of your eyes. The descriptions are vivid and detailed, adding to the overall atmosphere of the book.
Despite the sadness that pervades the story, there are also moments of hope and love that shine through. These moments make the book all the more powerful and leave you with a sense of satisfaction at the end. Overall, this is a book that I would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys a good read that will make them feel a whole range of emotions.
Not a 'cozy' Christmas read at all. Instead, it is a melancholy and absorbing character study that shies away from a tidy resolution. The titular Edward Ives is a foundling of unknown origin. As an adult, he discovers satisfaction in various aspects of his life - his marriage, his family, his work, his Catholic faith, and his community.
But then, tragedy strikes when his teenage son, who had decided to become a priest, is brutally murdered. Despite this heart-wrenching loss, Mr. Ives continues to fulfill his role in the community. He engages in good works and even corresponds with his son's murderer. However, his grief lingers on through the decades, leaving a profound impact on him.
Hijuelos' omniscient narration skillfully builds up a sensitive and complex portrait. It not only showcases the man and his family but also provides a vivid picture of New York over the decades. This story delves deep into the human psyche, exploring themes of grief, loss, and the search for meaning in the face of tragedy. It is a thought-provoking and poignant read that will stay with you long after you turn the last page.
Simply the best. This phrase holds a world of meaning. It implies a level of excellence that is unrivaled, a standard that is set so high that few can reach it. When something is described as simply the best, it means that it stands out from the rest, shining brightly in a sea of mediocrity.
It could refer to a person who is the most talented, the most dedicated, or the most innovative in their field. They have worked hard to achieve their status and are recognized as the top in their area of expertise. Or it could describe a product that is of the highest quality, the most reliable, or the most user-friendly. It has been designed and crafted with care, taking into account every detail to ensure that it meets the needs and expectations of its users.
Being simply the best is not easy. It requires a combination of skill, hard work, determination, and a passion for excellence. It means constantly striving to improve, to learn, and to grow. It means never settling for second best and always aiming for the top. But when you achieve that status, when you are recognized as simply the best, it is a feeling like no other. It is a testament to your hard work and dedication, and a source of pride and satisfaction that will last a lifetime.
