This statement seems to hold some truth.

It might be better for someone who has been playing for years and has become jaded. They have likely seen and experienced a great deal, and perhaps this new situation offers a change that they are more receptive to.

However, for a newbie that is still excited, it is a bit depressing. They are full of enthusiasm and anticipation, looking forward to a certain experience or outcome. But when they encounter this particular situation, it dampens their spirits.

It's important to consider the different perspectives and emotions of both the experienced player and the newbie. Understanding how this affects them can help in finding ways to address the situation and make it more enjoyable for everyone involved.

Maybe there are adjustments that can be made to better accommodate the needs and expectations of both groups. This could involve providing additional support or guidance to the newbie, or finding ways to reignite the passion of the jaded player.

By taking these factors into account, it is possible to create a more inclusive and fulfilling environment for all players, regardless of their level of experience.

Love Updike's humor and sense of wonder.

He is truly one of the best writers in the literary game. His works are filled with a unique charm that captivates readers.

What stands out particularly is the sense of frustration that often permeates his writing. It adds a layer of depth and authenticity to his stories.

I hold him in the same high regard as Bernard Darwin and Wodehouse when it comes to being the best golf writers. Their ability to capture the essence of the game and the emotions associated with it is remarkable.

Updike's writing style is engaging and his descriptions are vivid, making it easy for readers to immerse themselves in his world.

Whether it's the excitement of a close match or the disappointment of a missed shot, he has a way of making the reader feel as if they are right there on the golf course.

His works are not only entertaining but also thought-provoking, leaving a lasting impression on the reader.

Overall, Updike's contributions to the world of golf writing are significant and his works will continue to be enjoyed by readers for years to come.

Updike truly manages to capture all the diverse feelings that the average golfer experiences.

This book offers a much more engaging and enjoyable read compared to his classic work, Rabbit Run. The reason for this lies in the fact that in this particular piece, Updike himself is the main character, rather than Rabbit Angstrom.

By making himself the central figure, Updike is able to provide a more personal and intimate perspective on the game of golf and the emotions that come with it.

The reader is able to identify with Updike's experiences, frustrations, and joys on the golf course, making the book a truly immersive and relatable read.

Overall, this book is a must-read for any golf enthusiast or anyone who enjoys a well-written and engaging story.

He doesn't like golf.

However, he is addicted to it, which is quite a strange situation.

It seems that despite not having a genuine affection for the sport, he just can't break free from its hold.

Moreover, he really, really needs to find himself a different golf instructor.

Perhaps the current instructor is not able to meet his needs or is not teaching in a way that suits him.

A new instructor might bring fresh perspectives, new techniques, and a more personalized approach to his golfing journey.

By making this change, he hopes to improve his skills and maybe even develop a true love for the game.

It's time for him to take this step and see if a different instructor can make a significant difference in his golfing experience.

My least favourite Updike book that I've read so far is a real disappointment.

Even though golf is my absolute favourite "hobby", this particular book failed to engage me.

The story seemed to lack depth and the characters were not as well-developed as I had hoped.

The writing style, which is usually one of Updike's strengths, didn't quite work for me in this case.

Perhaps it was because the subject matter didn't resonate with me as much as I thought it would.

Despite my initial excitement, I found myself losing interest as I progressed through the book.

It's a shame really, as I had high expectations for this work.

However, everyone has different tastes and what doesn't work for me might be a great read for someone else.

Overall, it's safe to say that this is not a book that I would recommend to others.

Not what I expected, just like a golf score!

I was truly taken aback when I received this book. I had no anticipation of it being a compilation of published stories and articles centered around golf. To be honest, I was a bit disappointed at first. However, as I delved into the pages, I found myself surprisingly engaged. The book presented a fascinating exploration of the love/hate relationship that golf seems to evoke in so many people. It was a good and easy read, filled with anecdotes and perspectives that offered a unique insight into the world of golf. Whether you're a die-hard golf enthusiast or someone who has only a passing interest in the sport, this book has something to offer. It makes you think about the complex emotions and experiences that are associated with golf. Overall, while it wasn't what I was initially expecting, it still managed to capture my attention and provide an enjoyable reading experience.

This volume is a treasure trove that contains a wonderful collection of stories, articles, and speeches penned by the late great John Updike. The common thread running through all of these pieces is his true love: golf.

As for me, I'm someone who adores golf but unfortunately lacks the time (and sometimes the funds) to hit the greens as often as I'd like. However, through this remarkable book, I've discovered that reading about golf can be a surprisingly satisfying substitute. It's almost like methadone for a heroin addict, providing a sort of fix.

Updike's writing in this book is as exquisite as ever. He has an uncanny ability to describe the game and its courses in a way that makes it seem as if he's extracting thoughts directly from my own head. He also makes an interesting observation about how playing a round of golf with someone creates a special bond that is unique among golfers.

Moreover, there's a very useful article in the book that highlights Updike's favorite golf writing. From his recommendations, I've already managed to obtain PG Wodehouse's The Golf Omnibus, which is a collection of his works on the game.

In conclusion, if you have a passion for golf or, more precisely, if you enjoy reading about golf, then this book is an absolute must-have.

NB: The copy I own is a beautiful hardback first edition that my girlfriend was kind enough to get me for Christmas. It's a cherished possession that I'll no doubt return to again and again.

Some things are indeed not uninteresting, but genius can only be guessed with great difficulty.

Genius is often hidden beneath the surface, requiring careful observation and analysis to uncover.

It may manifest in various forms, such as exceptional creativity, remarkable intelligence, or unique skills.

However, recognizing genius is not always easy, as it may be overshadowed by mediocrity or hidden by the complexity of the subject matter.

Moreover, genius is not always immediately apparent, and it may take time and effort to fully appreciate and understand its significance.

Nevertheless, the pursuit of genius is a worthwhile endeavor, as it can lead to new discoveries, innovations, and advancements in various fields.

Therefore, we should always remain open-minded and curious, and be willing to explore and discover the hidden genius that lies within ourselves and others.

I recently discovered a 30-year-old book written by a great author.

Now that I am in semi-retirement, I have the luxury of playing golf once a week. Although I am still far from being a great golfer and am only approaching the mediocre level, I have developed a deep appreciation for the sport.

Surprisingly, I had never read this particular book before. However, after picking it up, I was immediately impressed by how well the author was able to capture the essence of golf.

The book not only provides valuable insights into the techniques and strategies of the game but also delves into the psychological and emotional aspects that come with it.

It has been a wonderful read and has enhanced my understanding and enjoyment of golf even further. I highly recommend it to any golf enthusiast, regardless of their skill level.
