A disjointed collection of golf anecdotes. Partly taken from Updike's books. Even for a golfer, not really interesting to read.

These golf anecdotes seem to lack a coherent thread. They are randomly pieced together, perhaps from different sources within Updike's works. As a result, the overall reading experience is rather disjointed and unengaging.

For a golfer, one might expect these anecdotes to offer some unique insights, humorous moments, or valuable tips related to the game. However, in this case, they fall short. The lack of a unified narrative or central theme makes it difficult to maintain interest and connection with the stories.

Perhaps with some additional editing and organization, these anecdotes could be transformed into a more engaging and enjoyable read. But as they stand now, they fail to capture the essence and excitement that golf enthusiasts might be looking for.

A good book awaits the fans of John Updike, a writer whose work I have held in high regard for a long time. It may also pique the interest of golfers. If you happen to be both a golfer and an Updike enthusiast, this volume is a compilation of short pieces that Updike wrote during his career. All of these pieces at least have some connection to the game of golf. There isn't anything truly novel in this collection, but it offers us a leisurely exploration into the lesser-known works of one of the most accomplished stylists in American literature. It allows us to delve into the mind of Updike and experience his unique perspective on golf and life. Whether you're looking for a light read or a deeper understanding of Updike's writing, this book is worth checking out.

I really enjoyed reading this wonderful collection of essays on golf.

It was truly engaging, especially when Updike shared his personal experiences and talked about his own game.

I found myself able to relate to many of the struggles he described, which made it even more interesting for me.

The chapter on one of his lessons stood out as the best and the funniest as well.

It was filled with humorous anecdotes and valuable insights that kept me entertained from start to finish.

Overall, this collection of essays is a must-read for any golf enthusiast or anyone interested in the game.

It offers a unique perspective on golf and provides a great deal of entertainment and inspiration.

I would highly recommend it to others.

A delightful anthology of Updike's writings, which mainly cover the 1990s, has emerged. These musings do not merely provide entertainment but also enlighten and enliven an inexpert and frequently downcast golfer.

Updike manages to make the experience of what I suspect is the vast majority of recreational golfers far more bearable. I have now come to realize that there are numerous individuals like me, and we all endure the same doubts and sorrows, face trials and tribulations, and experience ups and downs. He makes these not necessarily seem normal but at least shared. With a delicate utilization of the English language, he brings out these irritations, employing phrases and constructions that make them vivid and real.

This anthology is truly a superb read. It offers a unique perspective on the world of golf, one that both novice and experienced golfers can appreciate. Updike's writing is engaging, thought-provoking, and often humorous, making it a pleasure to read from start to finish. Whether you are a die-hard golfer or simply someone who enjoys a good read, this anthology is well worth your time.

At the zenith of my summer social activities and slightly exhausted from devouring 15,000 pages of literature this year, I chose to engage with this piece over the past week. I had purchased it some time ago with the plan to read it during the height of golf season. To put it in different words from what I stated in my review of Don DeLillo's "End Zone," the connection between literature and sports is rather brief. Of course, there are excellent sports writers, but even the most gifted among that specific group probably couldn't "carry the jockstrap" of an average prose craftsman. Here comes John Updike, the author of the massive "Rabbit" series, who incidentally is a fanatical golfer. "Golf Dreams" is a compilation of various golf-related works that Updike penned over the years; it includes excerpts from novels, articles for sports publications, speeches, and personal stories related to the game.

Updike delves into non-statistical/analytical/objective/competitive viewpoints of the game that will offer any amateur golfer understanding and comfort during what is surely a lifelong battle for improvement that might be unachievable. It might seem exaggerated to non-players, but seeing the game from the philosophical, spiritual, socioeconomic, psychological, and religious perspectives that Updike brings to light is truly a revelation. I will surely shoot an 89 in the next round I play after reading this. There is no doubt about it. It's guaranteed.

"Golf camaraderie, similar to that of astronauts and Antarctic explorers, is founded on a shared experience of transcendence; whether fat or thin, a scratch golfer or a duffer, we have been somewhere together where non-golfers never venture."

A gem, one of my favourite books, "JU" is truly a remarkable piece of literature.

It vividly and perfectly describes the emotional and spiritual highs and lows that are an inherent part of the game of golf. The author has masterfully captured the essence of the sport, taking the reader on a journey through the joys of a perfect shot and the disappointments of a missed putt.

The detailed descriptions and the exploration of the inner thoughts and feelings of the characters make this book not just a story about golf, but a profound exploration of the human experience.

I find myself constantly drawn back to this book, and I know that I will reread it again and again. Each time I do, I discover something new and gain a deeper understanding of the game and the people who play it. "JU" is a book that will stay with me for a long time, and I highly recommend it to anyone who has an interest in golf or in the human spirit.

If you're a golfer, this collection of well-told, golf goodies is an absolute no-brainer.

It's incredibly easy to envision oneself within the pages of most of Mr. Updike's stories. Especially for those of us who reached adulthood during the timeframe when many of the tales unfold, namely the nineteen sixties and seventies.

We all played on municipal courses when they were often in rather questionable conditions, yet still cherished every single second of it.

We each vividly remember our golfing buddies, both past and present, and their erratic swings at the ball, the bets won and lost, the last-second heroics, the serpentine putts that miraculously found the hole against all odds.

We recall the honors we didn't earn due to lucky and unlucky bounces, the pros we idolized and attempted to imitate, the purchase of those magic balls and clubs that were supposed to be foolproof.

We remember the mentors who had a profound impact on our game, for better or for worse, and the sun shining warmly on the back of our necks or the chilly winds when the more serious players had headed south for the winter.

John always manages to find a truly unique angle from which to view the goings-on. For example, he presents lady golfers as a continuation of the myth of the Amazons, and a caddie who knows John's golf game, life story, and finances better than he does.

If I have one small criticism, it's simply that he can sometimes become overly erudite when stretching a metaphor. However, we can easily forgive this indulgence in the exploration and exposition of such a noble game.

Other than the short story "A&P", which I also have a great affection for, this is the only Updike work that I have ever read. Growing up in an environment filled with terrible golf, thanks to my father and my high-school self, I derived a great deal of enjoyment from this collection. The essays chronicling Updike's continuous (and mostly unsuccessful, as he himself puts it) endeavors to master the golf course are far more engaging than the few short works of golf-based fiction included. These fictional pieces are not so bad as to cause the book to lose any stars, but they do give the impression of being filler.

I am now determined to read whatever Updike works I can lay my hands on and we shall see how things progress. I am eager to explore more of his writing and discover the unique perspectives and literary styles that he has to offer. Whether it be his novels, short stories, or essays, I am confident that there will be much to appreciate and learn from.
