I truly believe that if you are a die-hard Stephen King fan, you will definitely enjoy McCammon as well. McCammon writes in a somewhat simpler style. King himself has confessed that he has a tendency to be overly verbose or have what he calls "verbal diarrhea."

Do you have a passion for a great Good Vs. Evil story? Well, this one is a really good example. On the very first day I picked it up, I couldn't put it down for hours. However, then I lost my momentum as I skipped reading for a week. I highly do not recommend that! It can really disrupt the flow of your reading experience.

This is an excellent read that has a twist that completely took me by surprise. It was like it hit me right in the forehead. It was just awesome. The way the story unfolds and the unexpected turn of events make it a truly captivating and engaging read. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good thriller with a unique and exciting plot.

Boy -- I really WANTED to like this book...

To me, Robert McCammon is truly a hidden treasure. He is like a less known, less formulaic, and more lyrical version of Dean Koontz. When comparing the relative quality of these two writers, I have always wondered why their relative fame wasn't reversed.

However, this particular book, "Mystery Walk," just didn't deliver for me. Similar to a number of his previous works, it takes place in the deep south, during the 50's and 60's, an era that McCammon clearly knows and cherishes. But for some reason, this book failed to generate a strong sense of time for me. Despite all its period trappings, the mystical remembrance that it was supposed to evoke simply didn't materialize.

Part of the problem lies in the fact that this novel simply meanders. While other McCammon books have immediately drawn me into the story-line, and even his most reflective works, like "Boy's Life," had a whimsical charm, "Mystery Walk" never gained a proper pace or a distinct identity.

Oh, and by the way, this is also a horror novel, yet I'm not sure I felt even a momentary chill while reading it...

I still have two more McCammon books sitting on my shelf, namely "Mine" and "Usher's Passing." I'm hoping that those books will hit the stride that the author is clearly capable of.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that these remaining books will offer a more engaging and satisfying reading experience, redeeming the disappointment I felt with "Mystery Walk."

The only other McCammon story I have read apart from this one was Swan Song. I truly thought it was amazing. In hindsight, I should have read this one first. It was really good, yet I couldn't help but compare it to Swan Song, and in that regard, it fell a little short.

It was a typical good vs evil story with a slight twist. There wasn't really anything new here, but the writing had a certain charm that drew you in. In my limited experience with his writing, I've discovered that he's better than most authors I've read at making you want to read 'just one more chapter'. The story reminds me of the old Stephen King books. You know, the ones that must have been well-edited because they didn't drag on and on with excessive descriptiveness.

Billy has the ability to see dead people. It's something that most in his maternal family line can do. Unlike in the movie The Sixth Sense, this gift doesn't end there. These ghosts are trapped here and need to be helped to move on from this world. This is where Billy's gift/curse comes into play. Now, this skill wasn't exactly embraced by the other residents of his small town. A significant part of the story revolves around the way the family is treated. Bigotry and fear were rampant in backwood towns like this in the 50's and 60's. It didn't make for a great childhood for Billy.

I'll stop here. There's obviously a lot more that happens, but I don't want to spoil the fun for you. Suffice it to say, if you're a fan of King, you will probably be a fan of McCammon as well.

McCammon's book is solid, but this one doesn't quite reach the level of his masterpiece "Boy's Life".

Nevertheless, it is still highly readable, especially if you are a fan of King.

It's a story that will remain etched in my memory for a long time, just like all his other novels that I have had the pleasure of reading.
