3.5 stars to be honest.

King and McCammon are my two favorite authors. They are the guys who got me hooked on reading horror during my teenage years and are the very reason I still have a passion for it today. Of course, I haven't read everything these two masters have written, and Mine is one of those books I've avoided over the years. Admittedly, it's because the cover simply never appealed to me.

This story is about a woman named Laura whose child is snatched from her by a deranged woman named Mary Terror. Mary used to belong to a cult that was very similar to the Manson family. She is obsessed with finding and bringing a baby to her Manson-type leader because she lost the baby that was theirs many years ago.

The first half of the story does a good job of developing the characters of Laura and Mary Terror. However, it starts to drag a bit towards the middle. But then it picks up again as Laura gets closer to getting her baby back. (For some reason, the Chili's song keeps popping into my head!) Unfortunately, the big chase scene where Laura gets so close to her child before Mary gets away keeps repeating itself over and over again. By the end, it becomes quite tiresome.

The writing is good because it's McCammon, but the book is way too long. 500 pages could easily be reduced to 300 pages, and then perhaps I would have enjoyed it more.

If any other author (besides King) had written this book, I would probably round this review up to 4 stars. But I hold McCammon's novels to a higher standard. I plan on reading Ushers Passing next, hoping that it will surpass my experience with Mine.

This was my very first encounter with a Mccammon book. Currently, I have three more of his works sitting patiently in my to-be-read pile. As I delved into this particular book, I couldn't help but think that it might have offered a more enhanced reading experience if its length had been somewhere between 250 and 300 pages.

Perhaps with a more concise presentation, the story could have been tighter and more engaging. The pacing might have been improved, allowing for a more seamless flow from one event to the next.

Nevertheless, I still found certain aspects of the book to be quite interesting. The author's writing style has a certain charm that kept me turning the pages, eager to discover what would happen next.

Despite my initial thoughts about the length, I'm looking forward to exploring the other books by Mccammon that await me in my tbr pile. I'm curious to see if they will offer a different reading experience and if my opinion of his work will change or evolve.

Overall, while this first Mccammon book had its flaws, it also had enough merit to make me want to continue reading his works and see what else he has to offer.

This book, like all of McCammon's tomes, is exquisitely well crafted and written.

There is no superfluous content in his books, which is something that cannot be said for many renowned horror/thriller authors. Every plot point holds significance, and every detail serves a purpose.

However, for me, the book began to lose momentum around the midpoint. The beginning is truly excellent, with details about Mary Terror, Storm Front, and Laura's marriage - I was completely captivated. Mary Terror might just be one of the most fascinating villains in literature. But once the stage was set and all that remained was the chase, I started to feel fatigued.

There was never a moment when I thought something was unnecessary, but due to the nature of the plot, the chase simply wasn't as engaging as learning about the characters themselves. In the end, the story took the only possible direction. Spoiler - Laura catches up to Mary, they struggle, and Laura retrieves her baby. Unless McCammon was willing to take a big gamble with a plot twist, that was the only way it could unfold. The journey there was enjoyable, but we always knew where it was headed, and that just isn't as compelling.

Nevertheless, we have a story filled with amazing characters who inhabit a plot that can't support them throughout the entire journey. Even so, I highly recommend taking the ride anyway because there is so much to cherish here.

First, I truly have a great passion for McCammon's books.

However, it should be noted that this particular one is my least favorite among them.

It is an extremely long and convoluted story about an insane baby snatcher who seems to be stuck in the 1960s, pitted against a very resolute and mourning mother.

Despite the considerable length of the book, McCammon manages to maintain a brisk pace throughout.

The narrative weaves and turns, keeping the reader engaged even as they wade through the many pages.

The contrast between the deranged baby snatcher and the determined mother creates a tense and emotional backdrop for the story.

Overall, while it may not be my top pick, it still showcases McCammon's skill in crafting a captivating and detailed tale.

The character that McCammon creates in this novel is truly terrifying.

Mary is extremely disturbing, to the extent that I had to put the book down on several occasions just to get away from her.

Mary Terror is a character that will remain etched in my memory for a long time.

The subject matter in this book is also highly disturbing, which means that this book may not be suitable for everyone.

However, if you have a penchant for dark and disconcerting tales, then you should definitely give it a try.

Toward the end, there were a few elements that pushed the boundaries of credibility a little too far.

But I can overlook that because the book was written so beautifully.

The author's skill in creating such a vivid and creepy world is truly remarkable.

Overall, it's a book that will stay with you long after you've finished reading it.

Wow! Another unforgettable read by Robert McCammon!

This is going onto my top 5 favourite books of all time.

I alternated between the physical book and the audiobook narrated by Isabelle Gordon. She did a fabulous job of bringing each character to life.

As always, McCammon's writing is mesmerizing. I absolutely loved everything about this book.

The story of a mother's love for her newborn son and the deranged woman who steals him from the hospital is truly captivating.

The cross country chase to try to get him back and the horrific events in between make this a cracking read.

This was an exciting, nail-biting book from start to finish.

It gets my highest recommendation and I'm truly sorry it's over.

I had an absolute blast with this story!

McCammon has once again proven himself to be a master storyteller. His ability to create such vivid characters and a thrilling plot is truly remarkable.

The audiobook, with Isabelle Gordon's narration, added an extra layer of depth to the story.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good thriller or a heart-wrenching story of a mother's love.

It's a book that will stay with you long after you've finished reading it.

Now, let me tell you how to write true suspense! 'Mine' is a masterclass in building and maintaining tension that never relents for a moment. It's like a non-stop thrill ride that doesn't even give you a chance to catch your breath. I'm not exaggerating when I say that this book had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. In fact, I think I may have caused myself some permanent internal damage from continuously tensing up.

From the very first page, McCammon had a firm grip on me and he never let go. I found myself completely invested in the story, unable to put the book down. And now, I'd really like my balls back, Robert!

One of the things that makes 'Mine' so great is the protagonist, Mary. She is hands down one of the most deranged and terrifying characters I've ever come across. McCammon does an amazing job of putting you right inside her messed-up head, making you feel every ounce of her insanity. What's even scarier is how realistic she seems. She's not just a fictional character; she feels like a real person, which makes her all the more terrifying.

But that's not all. McCammon doesn't hold back at all in this book. Some of the places the story goes are truly shocking and disturbing. It's twisted and fucked up in the best possible way, and I absolutely loved it! The opening scene, in particular, is one that will stay with me forever. It's so powerful and memorable that it's burned itself into my memory.

In conclusion, I would highly recommend 'Mine' to anyone who loves a good thriller. If you enjoy having your heart race and breaking out in a cold sweat, then this book is for you. Just be prepared to be scared out of your wits!

What if your precious baby was snatched away from the hospital just 2 days after you gave birth? The very thought is enough to send shivers down one's spine. And then, to discover that the woman who stole him is not only dangerous but also completely insane.

Even though this is a fictional account, it feels like a real-life horror story that touches upon every conceivable fear within us.

McCammon's characters are developed with such meticulous detail that they seem almost real. He takes the reader on a thrilling cross-country chase that culminates in a final showdown of brutal proportions.

The story is action-packed and heart-stopping, an emotional rollercoaster that keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

However, it's important to note that this book is not for the ultra-sensitive.

Content concerns include extreme violence, adultery, cursing, drug and alcohol use, stealing, anti-police slurs, and sex. So, if you're looking for a light and fluffy read, this might not be the book for you. But if you're a fan of intense thrillers that push the boundaries, then this is definitely worth checking out.

This was an absolute roller coaster, and that much is undeniably true.

However, for me, a significant portion of the book could have been entirely omitted without having any impact on the plot.

This made it a bit tedious at times, despite its truly fantastic storyline.

Mary Terrell was a member of the terrorist organization known as The Storm Front.

The group disbanded following an ambush in which many members were either killed or injured.

When Mary discovers that an anonymous member of the group is arranging a meet-up, she jumps to the conclusion that it is her deceased baby's father, Jack, who was the leader of The Storm Front.

She decides that she will go to the meeting place with the intention of bringing her Lord a child.

All she requires is a baby.

The story then unfolds with Mary's desperate attempts to achieve her goal, facing numerous obstacles and challenges along the way.

Will she succeed in bringing a child to the meeting?

Or will her plans be thwarted?

These questions keep the reader on the edge of their seat, eager to find out what will happen next.

Despite the flaws in the pacing, the overall concept of the story is engaging and thought-provoking.

Mine, by Robert McCammon, is truly one of the most terrifying books I have ever had the misfortune to read in my entire life. And this is taking into account the fifty or so Stephen King novels, the ten or so Dan Simmons works, and the twenty or so Dean Koontz books that I have also completed.

Right from the very start, Mine hurtles forward at a breakneck pace, bombarding the reader with raw and visceral details that made even me, a die-hard horror fan, tremble in my chair. I have never despised a character as much as I loathe Mary Terror. She is a drug-addicted, delusional, sadistic, psychopathic, and downright evil monster with not a single redeeming quality. Every time McCammon describes her cradling poor Laura Clayborne's stolen baby in her enormous arms, I feel an increasing sense of gratitude that she is not, and will never be, a real human being.

Laura's character, along with the tragic subplot of Belinda "Didi" Morse, completely enthralled me. Each and every one of the minor characters was also well thought-out and three-dimensional. Come to think of it, there wasn't a single moment in this text (as there often is in most horror novels I've read) where I thought, "Why is she doing that?" or, "Come on! Get on with it!" The characters behaved exactly as I would envision them doing in such a tense and harrowing situation. The action never flagged for a moment, I never lost faith in Laura and her fierce determination to retrieve her newborn son, and I never once regretted spending ten dollars on this thrilling novel.

Mine is, without a doubt, McCammon's best work to date. It is well worth reading and has quickly become a new favorite on my personal list.

My first McCammon book in years, this novel has truly made me re-think my opinion of the author. And it's for the better.

"Mine" is a wild and intense ride that takes the reader right to the edge of madness. It is filled with chaos, mayhem, and betrayal at every turn.

The story follows a race between two women who are feverishly determined, crossing the country and leaving a trail of blood and bodies in their wake.

My favorite character is the antagonist, "Mary Terror." She was once part of a radical and violent anti-government faction in the 1960s called the Storm Front.

Back then, she was young, idealistic, and in love with the wrong man. She paid a heavy price for her choices.

Years later, still among the FBI's most wanted, the survivors of the Storm Front are called to a secret gathering, and Mary starts formulating big plans.

She is a complex character, both terrible and sympathetic, and she is the driving force behind the novel.

"Mine" does feel a bit dated in some ways, but it still holds up quite well, especially once the plot really gets going.

It takes a little while to build up momentum, and a few of the plot twists and character developments didn't quite ring true for me.

However, all in all, it was a good read. I was also a bit surprised to see so many posts calling it "horrifying."

While there were several fairly graphic scenes, nothing was overwhelming, and only one scene really began to border on disturbing.

I had actually hoped for more in that regard than the book delivered. I consider it more of a suspense/thriller than a horror story.

But an unexpected bonus was its portrayal of the 1960s and the Storm Front, both in the past and in the present. These aspects were surprisingly well done and presented.

If I could, I would give it another half-star.
