This is not my favorite work by Simmons, but it is still a good read. He delves into the incredible true story of how Ernest Hemingway, while residing in Cuba in 1942, assembled a motley spy group for the war effort. From this starting point, he extrapolates and weaves an engaging narrative. In the afterword, Simmons provides us with valuable insights, revealing which elements of the story were factual. Surprisingly, it turns out that a significant portion of it is based on real events, much more than one might initially anticipate. This not only adds an element of authenticity to the story but also makes it all the more fascinating. It gives readers a unique perspective on Hemingway's life during that time and the role he played in the war. Overall, despite not being my top pick by Simmons, this book offers an interesting and thought-provoking read.
