Harold Bloom was an American literary critic and the Sterling Professor of Humanities at Yale University. In 2017, Bloom was called "probably the most famous literary critic in the English-speaking world." After publishing his first book in 1959, Bloom wrote more than 50 books, including over 40 books of literary criticism, several books discussing religion, and one novel. He edited hundreds of anthologies concerning numerous literary and philosophical figures for the Chelsea House publishing firm. Bloom's books have been translated into more than 40 languages. He was elected to the American Philosophical Society in 1995.
Bloom was a defender of the traditional Western canon at a time when literature departments were focusing on what he derided as the "school of resentment" (multiculturalists, feminists, Marxists, and others). He was educated at Yale University, the University of Cambridge, and Cornell University.

I have an intense love for this book.

The characters within it are so vivid and lifelike that as I was engrossed in reading, I became deeply involved with them.

Their world is completely foreign to my own, yet the author, through his remarkable writing skills, managed to make me yearn to enter their world and be a part of it, even if it was only during the time I was reading this amazing book.

The relationship between Reuven and his father is truly exceptional.

This is the second occasion that I have read this book, and perhaps I enjoyed it even more the second time around.

Once again, I wasn't prepared to let go of the characters, and fortunately, I didn't have to, as the story of Reuven and Danny continues in "The Promise" (which I am also re-reading!).

Chaim Potok is an extraordinary author, and if you haven't had the pleasure of reading any of his work, you really should do yourself a favor and experience his brilliant storytelling.

It's an opportunity to be transported to different worlds and become invested in the lives of his captivating characters.

You'll be glad you did.

One of those books that only start getting good after a hundred pages or so.

I couldn't read it the first time round. It was really a struggle.

However, I decided to give it a second attempt.

And after that initial struggle, it actually gets pretty good.

The story starts to unfold in an interesting way, and the characters become more engaging.

But overall, it's outdated.

The language and some of the concepts may seem a bit old-fashioned to modern readers.

Nevertheless, it still has its charm and can be an enjoyable read for those who are willing to put in the effort.

It's a reminder that sometimes, we need to be patient and give things a second chance to truly appreciate them.
