Initially, I was drawn to pick up this book simply because my favorite color happens to be purple. Little did I know that I was about to embark on a journey into the profound and heart-wrenching depths of this novel. Right from the start, I found myself completely captivated by it. The unique form of the book, written in the style of letters, instantly reminded me of the powerful and poignant writing in The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank.
Although the beginning of the story was rather depressing, it was the glimmer of hope at the end that transformed it into a somewhat happy book. It was a beautiful contrast that added depth and complexity to the narrative. One of my favorite aspects of this novel is the courage of the author, Alice Walker. She was not afraid to broach the topic of a potential homosexual relationship, even during a time when homosexuality was widely frowned upon. This boldness and authenticity made the story all the more engaging and thought-provoking.
I would most definitely recommend this book to high schoolers and older readers. It has the power to touch hearts, open minds, and spark important conversations about love, acceptance, and the human experience. It is a literary gem that should not be missed.
