Back in the 1980s, when this collection was first published as part of the Vintage Contemporaries series, I was captivated. Reading it again this past week, I'm even more in awe of Carver's words.
The seven stories in this book are told with such care and tenderness. It's as if Carver allows us to hold the warm, beating hearts of his characters in our trembling hands. His clear, clean, and sparse prose is a wonder. One can't help but wonder how he pulls it off, but he does, with his distinct voice that we can only call Carver magic.
For poetry lovers, there are fifty-two Carver poems. My favorite captures an evening with Charles Bukowski. It's a hilarious and insightful piece that's well worth the price of admission.
The four short essays on life, inspiration, writing, and teaching offer valuable insights. Carver urges us to keep writing, no matter the odds. He emphasizes the importance of having a dedicated space to write and the need for endless revision. He also warns against tricks in writing and stresses the importance of precision.
Raymond Carver's work is a treasure trove of literary excellence. His words have stood the test of time and continue to inspire and delight readers today.

“That's all we have, finally, the words, and they had better be the right ones.”
― Raymond Carver
