FINALLY - A short story collection that I can wholeheartedly recommend. There isn't a single dud in this collection. Some of the stories have the power to break you a little, delving deep into the human condition and touching on the raw emotions that lie within. But then, there are also those moments when you'll find yourself laughing out loud, caught off guard by the unexpected humor and wit. Raymond Carver's ability to craft these little perfect nuggets of hope and despair is truly remarkable. His writing is so细腻 and precise that it draws you in from the very first sentence and doesn't let go until the very end. Each story is a masterclass in storytelling, exploring themes of love, loss, and the search for meaning in life. If you're a fan of short stories, then this collection is an absolute must-read.

Exemplary, masterful short stories are a true delight to read. Raymond Carver's works are a prime example of this. His ability to capture the essence of human relationships and the complexities of life in just a few pages is truly remarkable. Each story is like a small window into a different world, filled with vivid characters and powerful emotions.

I have been thoroughly impressed by Carver's writing and will definitely be on the lookout for more of his works. His unique style and voice make his stories stand out from the rest. Whether it's a story about love, loss, or simply the everyday struggles of life, Carver has a way of making the reader feel deeply connected to the characters and their experiences.

In conclusion, if you're a fan of short stories, I highly recommend checking out Raymond Carver's works. You won't be disappointed.

A lot of the stories really made me go “????”. I found myself constantly scratching my head, completely confused and bewildered.

It made me wish, oh so strongly, that I had a literature teacher by my side. Someone who could patiently explain to me what was so incredibly special about this guy and some of these rather puzzling stories.

I mean, some of the情节 seemed so strange and convoluted that I just couldn't wrap my head around them. Maybe a literature teacher would have the knowledge and the expertise to break it all down for me, to make it all make sense.

With their guidance, I might be able to understand the deeper meanings and the hidden nuances within these stories. It would be like having a key to unlock a whole new world of understanding and appreciation.

So, here I am, left with my questions and my confusion, longing for that literature teacher to come and save the day.

Well written, and a few amazing stories were presented.

However, quite a few of them just didn't deliver the expected impact.

The overall quality was a bit uneven.

On the other hand, Altman's film was very good indeed.

It managed to capture the essence and engage the audience effectively.

The director's vision and the way the story was told made it stand out.

Despite the flaws in some of the other works, Altman's film was a shining example of great filmmaking.

It had a unique charm and a narrative that kept the viewers hooked from start to finish.

It was a pleasure to watch and left a lasting impression.

Overall, while there were some disappointments, Altman's film was a definite highlight.

This collection of stories that I am rereading for the third time dates back to 1994 and is the selection of tales by Carver that Robert Altman used for his film Short Cuts. Thirty years have passed and it still has the same power. However, I wonder if in these times of political correctness and revisionism, these stories will not be censored or modified to adapt to the current social thinking.

The characters in the stories are completely current as the themes they deal with are the same as we have now: difficulties in couple relationships, insecurities and fears where we don't know how to value the present, lack of communication…

Raymond Carver writes like few are capable of doing. In a short story, he is able to portray a complete story, developing complex characters, and the reader knows how they act and think. The characters are normal people in everyday situations, middle or lower-middle-class workers, but where Carver makes us see human misery in the form of envy, jealousy, infidelities, cowardice or where some take advantage of others. Raymond is one of the representatives along with Charles Bukowski or Tobias Wolf of that literary movement known as dirty realism, where the writing style is dry, simple and austere, with hardly any adjectives or metaphorical concessions.

In the story "Neighbors", Carver shows us how curiosity or snooping on the neighbors' objects serve as vital stimulants to reactivate and get out of the mediocre lives of his protagonists.

In the story "It's Not Your Husband", the inferiority complex of a husband is manifested when he loses his job and his wife, who has already lost her youthful freshness, is the breadwinner of the family. The first one looks for others to tell him how lucky he is to have a beautiful wife when that is not the case. He looks for a hold on past or present fortune because he knows perfectly well that his future is plummeting towards a dark tunnel.

In "Vitamins", selfishness and cowardice are combined. The male protagonist tries to take advantage of his position to be unfaithful to his partner for pure immediate pleasure without thinking about the possible consequences of his act, and then shows great cowardice when the situation gets complicated like a veteran war monger who pretends to take advantage of the defenselessness of the woman who accompanies the protagonist, humiliating both.

In "Will You Please Be Quiet, Please?", an episode of infidelity that occurred years ago by the wife shakes the life of the protagonist, raising the question of what it means to be a man and if any violent act is justified. It is the story that I liked the most.

In the story "So Much Water So Close to Home", the husband plans to spend a weekend of fishing and drinking with his friends, and nothing in the world will make him miss this planned entertainment for weeks, and the fact that they find the corpse of a woman who is being searched for by her family and the police is not a sufficient reason to change the plans. Not out of charity or humanity. The author shows us the lack of responsibility and empathy towards others in a society where appearances matter a lot.

In "It Seems Like a Lot of Fuss" and in the poem "Lemonade", the drama of the death of a child appears. This vital tragedy is developed in an austere way, without artifice and without beating around the bush, we see the devastating consequences for the parents.

In "Tell the Women We're Going", the contained violence in the protagonist is present when he does not accept the consequences of his acts due to his lack of responsibility. Brutal.

With each reading, I have liked Carver more and more.

Unbelievable! The horror that exists between men is truly astonishing. It seems that in this world, there are times when the actions and behaviors of men can be so cruel and heartless.

One might wonder what drives such horror. Is it greed, power, or simply a lack of empathy? Whatever the cause, it is a sad state of affairs.

However, it is also important to note that not all men are like this. There are still those who are kind, compassionate, and strive to make the world a better place. It is these individuals who give us hope and remind us that there is still good in the world.

We must not let the horror overshadow the good. Instead, we should focus on the positive and work towards creating a more peaceful and harmonious world for all.

Oddly enough, I didn't like this collection of stories too much at first. I thought them abrupt, lacking in depth, and the dialogue seemed silly, unrealistic, and a bit clumsy. However, somewhere in the middle, after reading a few stories, Carver's style just demanded to be appreciated. By the end of the book, I was happily left wanting more. It was quite a turn around!

For every story, it's as if you're just picked up and plunked in the middle of these characters' lives for a short period of time. Just enough to know something important about them, and then plucked right out to be dropped onto the next. They're mostly snippets of a time and place in a life, or several lives. There isn't a traditional beginning, middle, and end to their stories. They just exist as they do, as little fractions of time.

It's pretty darn genius once you get used to the unsteady floor underneath you and get your footing. You start to see the beauty and the power in these seemingly simple and fragmented tales. Carver has a way of capturing the essence of a moment and making it feel profound and meaningful. His writing style may take some getting used to, but once you do, it's truly a rewarding experience.

Daily stories, full of realism, seem simple in theme but deeply explore human relationships and human nature in general. For me, first of all, Karl Weber, I will definitely try to read all of his collections in the original.

These stories often present ordinary life scenes, yet they manage to uncover the complex emotions and motives hidden within. Through the portrayal of different characters and their interactions, we can gain a better understanding of the diverse aspects of human nature.

Karl Weber's works are known for their authenticity and depth. His stories have the power to touch our hearts and make us reflect on our own lives. By reading his collections, we can embark on a journey of self-discovery and learn valuable lessons about love, friendship, and the meaning of life.

Whether it's a story about a small-town romance or a drama set in a big city, Karl Weber's writing always manages to engage and captivate the reader. His ability to bring characters to life and create a vivid and believable world is truly remarkable.

In conclusion, Karl Weber's stories are a treasure trove of human experiences. I look forward to delving into his collections and uncovering the many gems that lie within.

Wow,

I did not realize that it has been a year and a half since I started this book.

Although it is under 160 pages, it was perfect for reading over a long period of time as it was composed entirely of short stories.

Some of these stories lasted around 20 pages, while others were only 3 pages long.

I truly enjoyed several of the stories. They were engaging and held my attention from start to finish.

However, there were also some that were a bit boring. They failed to capture my interest and led to a loss of my desire to continue reading the book.

But, despite this, I did manage to finish it. YAY!

This accomplishment makes me feel a sense of satisfaction.

I am glad that I stuck with it and completed the reading journey.

It has been an interesting experience, filled with a mix of emotions and thoughts.

Overall, I would say that this book had its highs and lows, but it was still worth the read.

I was completely taken by the humanity of these stories as I read them in one sitting. The lives described were enticingly normal, filled with platitudes that demonstrated the beauty of our own everyday existence. However, in an instant, they were torn open by the wretchedness of a moment. These stories offer solemn reflections on the nature of men, violence, sexuality, and unforeseen consequences. They provide a look at the threads that make up the fabric of life. We see how the simplest of actions can have far-reaching effects, and how the most ordinary of people can be thrust into extraordinary situations. It is a reminder that life is both beautiful and fragile, and that we must cherish every moment.

I have never been clear to myself why I can't have the companionship and the unity of thought that I should have with American works. But nevertheless, for the umpteenth time, I decided to try again and this time my choice was the selected collection of short stories "Interstate" by Raymond Carver. For two reasons: first, because of my lack of focus these days, I thought a short story would be a better option for me, and second, because of my strange urge to follow the works of a particular writer until I can 

... And how cold and lonely Carver's works are. What a bitter wind of deceit and delusion blows through them in the form of a human being. How real they are and how brutally they wound a person. With the brilliant endings in the short works. Truly brilliant. How simple and easy these final paragraphs fit into the puzzle of the story that I, the reader, wonder: What happened? Is it really that easy? Where did that peak and excitement go? Why didn't anyone's heart stop in the embrace of all this separation? Why did it go forward so simply, "like drinking water"?

The main and peripheral theme of all the stories in this collection - which has been selected by a director for his film - is separation and the end of a love relationship in the midst of daily life and open wounds that are still there every day. Simple separations, without shouting and crying and without fast and violent actions. Simple separations that took shape over time. There is an acceptance and a sadness in the hearts of these few-page heroes. A resignation that is not, an acceptance, a pre-knowledge with respect in all of them. All of our characters on the last pages are alone or tell us the story of their loneliness, and this loneliness and this story come out from behind the pages of the book and shine on a person's face like a fog or like a cloud. You can't continue his stories one after the other because these clouds also shine and become thick. Maybe you can go through each one: a great loneliness in the heart of a small hero for each day.

I'm glad that the story "When We Talk About Love" was included in this precious collection. I had wanted to read it for a long time. It was very close to me and very realistic for me.
