These nine stories and a poem are familiar to the readers of Carver from his earlier collections. However, according to the director Robert Altman, they served as the inspiration for the plot of his own film "Short Cuts" in 1993. Some of the stories are so concise that they leave little impression. Nevertheless, the two longer stories about how to deal with death, namely "So Much Water So Close To Home" and "A Small, Good Thing", are extremely harrowing and are among my favorites. The introduction by Altman provides valuable insights into how these minimalist stories were transformed into a movie that I greatly enjoyed at that time. It is fascinating to see how the director was able to take these short stories and create a complex and engaging film. The combination of Carver's writing and Altman's vision resulted in a work that is both thought-provoking and emotionally impactful. Overall, the relationship between these stories and the film "Short Cuts" is a testament to the power of literature and its ability to inspire other forms of art.
