One of the best alternatives I ever tried was truly pure magic!

It was an experience that left me completely amazed and satisfied.

The moment I delved into it, I was transported to a whole new world of possibilities.

Every aspect of it seemed to be carefully crafted and designed to perfection.

The features and functions it offered were not only innovative but also highly practical.

It solved many of the problems and challenges I had been facing with other options.

I couldn't help but be impressed by its simplicity and ease of use.

Even those who are not tech-savvy can quickly adapt and start using it without any difficulties.

In conclusion, this alternative is definitely a game-changer and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a better solution.

It's truly a magical find that has exceeded my expectations in every way.

World War I in a world where magic exists. Fletcher Arrowsmith, a young man from a small town, decides to leave and head to Europe. There, he trains to become a flier in order to fight against the German forces. However, the reality is much more harrowing and terrifying than he had ever expected.

The "of course" in the original text is the reason why this story doesn't receive a better rating. Even with the element of magic added, it still feels like familiar Great War material. Busiek fails to convey the sense that, despite all the bloodshed and horror, this was an exciting time for many of the participants. Additionally, as other reviews have noted, it is an adventure that is almost entirely white and male-dominated.

This lack of diversity and the failure to capture the true essence of the era make the story somewhat平淡 and unremarkable. While the concept of magic in a war setting has potential, it is not fully realized in this narrative.

Great series by Busiek and company.

This is an alternate history that combines magic, magicians, dragons, and demi-humans who are regarded as a lower caste. It is set during the First World War between Britannia and Prussia.

The protagonist is a young man who enlists with the intention of fighting "the good fight." However, he soon discovers that wars are truly horrific and that neither side is innocent.

Busiek is extremely talented in creating well-developed characters, and the story is paced in such a way that it reveals the world and its inhabitants gradually, without overwhelming us with excessive information.

Pacheco, unfortunately, passed away a few years ago, but his excellent artistry lives on. The battle scenes are depicted in a way that is not overly gory.

Definitely looking forward to picking up volume 2 and continuing this exciting journey.

I am deeply enamored with the worldbuilding presented here. It offers a fascinating and magical rendition of World War I, which is both unique and captivating.

Admittedly, the message and the characters might bear a slight resemblance to some common clichés. However, this does not detract from the overall quality of the work. In fact, it is really well-drawn, with great attention to detail and a vivid imagination.

I wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone who has a penchant for horror-of-war stories. It provides a fresh perspective on a well-trodden theme and is sure to keep readers on the edge of their seats.

Busiek writing a World War 1 story with fantasy elements initially sounded extremely promising. And I am truly thrilled to discover that it is indeed a great piece of work. Fletcher, despite having a rather dumb name, provides a fascinating perspective. We get to witness the early wonder of joining the war effort through his eyes, which is then contrasted sharply with the later horrors of war's harsh reality. Busiek is truly remarkable at telling fantastical stories. At first glance, these stories may seem to be idealistically wholesome or falsely nostalgic. However, as the narrative progresses, they reveal their emotional realism and offer thoughtful commentary on the earlier idealism. What's more, this is a really cool fantasy version of WW1, and it also looks great visually! I'm quite bummed to find out that this series doesn't have the 15+ volumes that Astro City does. But at least they're finally making a second story arc in this world. The quotes add an extra layer of depth to the story. For example, "Hasn’t it ever occurred to you that everyone pretends? That’s how they learn to be something new." makes us think about the masks people wear and the process of self-discovery. "We just — that’s what we do, isn’t it? They attack. We fight back. They fight back. And then it’s all about fighting back and it doesn’t really matter how it started any more, is it? And it spreads and spreads…" highlights the senseless cycle of war. And "I’d thought these men — and the generals and kings and so on — were masters of the world. And maybe they were, once. But now, they’re just trying to hang on. To keep fighting back. To hold the line, whatever it costs. To hold things together." gives us a sense of the desperation and the struggle to maintain order in the chaos of war.
