Toni is a truly remarkable individual, known for her wisdom and extensive knowledge. For the most part, I find her interviews to be highly enjoyable. However, there is a significant drawback. The interviewers often tend to ask the same questions over and over again, and the information presented is repeatedly written as if it were an original idea or something that is absolutely necessary. As a result, this book becomes extremely repetitive. By around page 170, it becomes almost unbearable to continue reading. In fact, it was a torturous experience getting through all 287 pages. I must admit that I very ineffectively skimmed the last 100 or so pages.

On the positive side, though, I was able to extract some really good quotes from the first 130 or so pages. Toni's words made me think deeply and reflect on various aspects. One of my favorite interviews in the book is the one with Toni Morrison by Charles Ruas, which spans from pages 93 to 118. In this interview, Toni delves into a plethora of relevant cultural topics. She is not only highly enlightening but also refreshingly honest in her responses. It is moments like these that make the book somewhat redeemable, despite its flaws.

There is no writer who holds such a special place in my heart as Toni Morrison.

Her writings and talks have a profound connection with me, deeper than that of any other writer. I am completely obsessed with her languages, enamored by her beautiful soul. I highly admire her values, and most importantly, I am greatly inspired by her imagination.

A few years ago, I first read "Song of Solomon" and immediately fell in love with Toni Morrison. In fact, she was the one who ignited my curiosity to read more literature. I loved her so much that in 2018, I made a decision to read all of her 11 fictions, and that turned out to be my best reading year ever. From then on, I have continuously kept her words around me, feeling closer to her... even though she has left us. I chose "Conversation with Toni Morrison" to be included in my 2019 reading goal #womenpioneers because, indeed, she is my heroine.

In 1993, Toni Morrison won the Nobel Prize in Literature, making her the first African American to receive this honor. Although I haven't read enough African American literature to make a comprehensive judgment, Toni Morrison clearly blazed a new trail in the literary territory. And, I firmly believe that no one can write like Toni Morrison.

Reading "Conversation with Toni Morrison" has made my love for her writing even more meaningful. This book is a collection of her interviews from the time when she wrote "The Bluest Eyes" to "Jazz" (including "The Bluest Eye", "Sula", "Song of Solomon", "Tar Baby", "Beloved", "Jazz"). It provides such valuable insights from Morrison's own words about the inspirations behind these books. I obtained numerous clues to solve the questions that I had when reading her 11 fictions, and it makes me eager to reread them all again. The greatest收获 I got from this book was learning about Morrison's writing life. It is such a serene experience to listen to (read) her talk about her life as a writer, a woman, a teacher, and a mother. She never boasted that 'I am a bestselling author, or an award-winning author, or whatever'. She simply said, 'I am a writer'. Her work is an act of giving, allowing people to see and witness themselves, and also presenting the great beauty and hope that art is capable of. What a precious gift Morrison was to the world, and her work will always be.

The songs of Toni Morrison will forever resonate within me.
