Maybe it's because my expectations have built up so high throughout the book that the ending simply can't quite measure up.

Or perhaps it's just a quirk of my own reading preferences.

Either way, it's a curious phenomenon that I can't quite figure out.

Despite this, I still highly respect Susan Howatch as a writer and continue to be drawn to her books.

I re-read this book after many years.

The first time I read it, I didn't realize it was based on Caesar, Antony, and Cleopatra. Nevertheless, it immediately became one of my favorite books. This shows how timeless this story of love and power is.

The book begins in the UK and New York, post-World War I, and is told in the first person by a succession of interesting characters based on real Romans. The character based on Cleopatra, Dinah, gets two sections to herself. She is clearly the main character and is a strong, powerful lady doing her best in a man's world.

However, this leads to my only criticism. One of the other main characters, the only other female (Sylvia, based on Caesar's wife), is so meek and pathetic that it makes for painful reading. I understand that she is supposed to be strong in another way, like country singers who put up with their cheating men. But seriously, she's just annoying.

Overall, though, it's a great book, and I'm looking forward to reading it again in another 15 years or so!

Each of them had their own unique personalities and backstories that made them come alive on the pages. It was truly a pleasure to get to know them as the story unfolded.

However, I must admit that some of the plots were a little bit contrived. They seemed a bit forced at times and didn't always flow as smoothly as I would have liked. But, on the other hand, I understand that this book was drawn on a large scale and perhaps these contrived plots were necessary to fit all the elements together.

The title, unfortunately, does not suit the tale. It doesn't really give any indication of what the story is about and may even mislead potential readers. I think a different title would have been more appropriate and would have better captured the essence of the book.
