Mesmerising, extraordinary, absolutely beautiful.

These words truly capture the essence of what lies within the pages of this remarkable piece.

'There is no beyond, there is only here, the infinitely small, infinitely great and utterly demanding present'. This profound statement forces us to stop and truly consider the nature of our existence.

It makes us realize that the present moment is all we have, and it is both infinitely precious and infinitely challenging.

We are constantly bombarded with distractions and pulled in different directions, but this passage reminds us to focus on the here and now.

To appreciate the small details, to embrace the greatness that surrounds us, and to meet the demands of the present with courage and determination.

It is a call to action, a reminder to live fully and authentically in each and every moment.

So worth reading, this piece has the power to change the way we think and the way we live.

It is a must-read for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.

I really didn't enjoy this book at all.

By the time I reached the halfway point, I was already on the verge of giving up. However, I felt that since I had already put in so much effort, I should persevere and continue reading.

Finally, when I finished the book, my reaction was simply, "Thank goodness that's over."

This is a long and rambling novel that lacks a single attractive character. I seriously doubt if it would have ever been published if its author hadn't been Iris Murdoch.

Looking back, I can't seem to identify any redeeming features in this book. It was a real struggle to get through, and I don't think I would recommend it to anyone.

I'm disappointed that I wasted my time on this book, and I hope that my next reading experience will be more enjoyable.

I firmly believe that I have perused every single one of Murdoch's books, and they never disappoint. This particular volume is a long and intricate one, filled with a plethora of characters that truly engage the mind. It delves into profound philosophical concepts while also sprinkling in copious amounts of humor. One of the most charming aspects is the exquisitely drawn little dog named Zed. His presence adds a touch of warmth and playfulness to the story. I cannot recommend this novel highly enough. It is a literary gem that offers a rich and fulfilling reading experience. Whether you are a fan of Murdoch's work or simply a lover of great literature, this book is sure to captivate and delight you.

I have no clue what her intentions were. However, it mostly 'works' despite being extremely long and diverse.

The Philosopher and His Pupil are two kinds of bad guys. Strangely enough, they are both appealing to women. The Pupil is consumed by envy and is even violently crazy. The Philosopher, on the other hand, is dignified yet unknowable. Neither of them is as kind-hearted as the priest or the quaker.

There is a great deal of other commotion as well, and there is even a cute dog.

It's a rather strange and complex situation, full of various elements and characters that interact in unexpected ways. The long and diverse nature of it all makes it both fascinating and a bit overwhelming at the same time.

As the title implies, and given that the author taught philosophy at university, philosophy serves as the foundation of this book. In particular, moral and, in my opinion, existential philosophy are prominent.

The story is set in a small fictional town in southern England. The main characters are the McCaffrey family, yet there are numerous other individuals as well. Many of them are influenced by John Robert Romanov, who was born in the town and has become a renowned philosopher. He has come back to complete his "great book" but has begun to question his own beliefs.

At certain moments, the philosophy presented in the book feels a bit overwhelming to me. However, the underlying tales of love, belief, loyalty, and family more than compensate for that. This book likely requires at least one more reading to be better understood and appreciated. Whether I will ever manage to find the time for that is a different issue altogether.

Iris Murdoch was a remarkable writer with a vast body of work. Her letters from 1934 to 1995, published in "Letters from Iris Murdoch," offer a fascinating glimpse into her life and thoughts.

Her memoir, "Iris," provides further insights into her personal journey.

Some of her notable novels include "A Severed Head," "The Sea, the Sea," "The Black Prince," "The Bell," and many others. Each of these works showcases her unique writing style and profound understanding of human nature.

In addition to her original works, several of her novels have been translated, such as "Under the Net," "The Sacred and Profane Love Machine," "A Fairly Honourable Defeat," and more.

Iris Murdoch's literary contributions have had a significant impact on the world of literature, and her works continue to be studied and enjoyed by readers today.

I was truly astonished by the captivating nature of a book that predominantly relies on telling rather than showing when it comes to描绘 people's emotions towards one another. Murdoch is an extremely proficient dialogue writer, and she has fully envisioned the idiosyncrasies and motivations of each of her characters.

However, there isn't a particularly intricate plot to discuss. Despite Murdoch's talent for introspection and character interaction, given the length of nearly 600 pages in my copy, there were sections that felt rather sluggish. Additionally, the cast of characters was perhaps a touch too extensive, making it difficult for every character to receive truly meaningful development or for all the storylines to be neatly tied together.

It's not that all storylines must be neatly resolved (in fact, the little concluding section at the end of the book, in my view, was extraneous and a bit tiresome). It's just that certain elements got lost or weren't developed sufficiently for me to start truly caring about them. On the other hand, there were other aspects that I did care about and wished there had been more of.

Somehow, I just didn't click with this book.

The characters within its pages seemed rather boring to me. They lacked that certain spark or charm that would have made me truly care about them.

I'm not trying to say that this is objectively a bad book. There are likely many people who would find it engaging and enjoyable.

However, for me personally, I felt a sense of relief when I finally finished it. It was as if a burden had been lifted.

Perhaps it was the writing style, or maybe it was just my own mood at the time.

Either way, this particular book just didn't resonate with me in the way that I had hoped.

But that's the beauty of reading - everyone has different tastes and preferences.

And who knows, maybe I'll pick up another book by the same author in the future and have a completely different experience.

For now, though, I'm glad to have moved on to something new.

Like reading a soap opera, this story went on a bit long.

At times, it felt as if the plot was stretching and meandering without a clear direction.

The characters seemed to be involved in endless dramas and convoluted relationships that could have been more streamlined.

However, despite its length, there were still some redeeming qualities.

The descriptions were vivid, painting a detailed picture of the settings and the emotions of the characters.

It was as if the author was trying to create a rich and immersive world for the readers to get lost in.

But perhaps with a bit more editing and tightening, this story could have been even more engaging and impactful.

As it stands, it's a bit of a mixed bag, with both its strengths and weaknesses.

Nevertheless, it still managed to hold my attention to some extent, making me curious to see how it would all end.

I have extremely mixed feelings, and I strongly suspect that this particular novel might not be the most ideal introduction to Murdoch.

Reading this book demands a significant commitment as it consists of hundreds of pages dedicated to the detailed development of characters. The plot is rather minimal, yet there are numerous strange personalities. I discovered that this was far more surreal than I had initially anticipated, and the incestuous tendencies were more prominent than I would have liked...

Having said that, I did take pleasure in the philosophical discussions and Murdoch's exploration of obsession. Despite its strangeness, this novel leaves me with a great deal to contemplate - which is often a characteristic of outstanding writing. It makes me question various aspects of human nature, relationships, and the power of obsession. The way Murdoch presents these ideas forces the reader to engage deeply with the text and think beyond the surface level.

Overall, while this novel may not be everyone's cup of tea, it does have its merits and offers a unique perspective on certain themes.
