I was driving down the mountain. The wind was gently caressing my face through the open car window. I had a job starting in a month, but until that moment, there was nothing but uncertainty before it. It was like a gaping void, and I was afraid that if I wasn't careful, I would slip through it and go completely mad.

This book, for me, is really more of a 3.5-star read.

Although this is the first book by Julia Alvarez that I've had the pleasure of reading, it's crystal clear that this is where she found her unique voice. She skillfully highlights the contradictions and expectations that come with being a woman, and tells captivating stories about her family. It's an incredibly interesting collection. The authenticity shines through on every page, making you stop and really think about the various aspects of life and relationships.

Overall, it's a nice collection that's perfect for an easy afternoon read, allowing you to escape into the world of the author's words and thoughts.
