In one of her essays, she clearly and meticulously lays out her unique process for writing.

She shares the places and moments where she manages to get and save her precious impressions and vivid mental images.

I vividly remember that upon reading her words, I was almost overcome with the urge to write myself.

As someone who has always regarded myself as having nothing particularly worthy to declare or express, this was a truly remarkable feeling.

Moreover, I have a special affection for the essay she wrote on speaking Spanish in the US.

I find myself referring to this particular piece to my students all of the time.

It serves as a valuable and engaging resource that helps them better understand various aspects of language and culture in a different context.

Her writing has truly had a profound impact on me and my teaching.

It has opened my eyes to new possibilities and perspectives, and has inspired me to explore my own creativity and expression.

I am truly grateful for having discovered her work and look forward to reading more of her essays in the future.

I really liked this piece

because I have a bit of a crush on Ms. Alvarez. It was truly interesting to get to know her story as it was seamlessly woven into her fiction.

I'm not entirely sure if a non-fan would enjoy this Q&A about herself and her writing. However, for me, it was very informative.

It answered several questions I had. For instance, I now understand why she requires a translator for her Spanish editions.

Also, I got an idea of how much of some of her books are based on facts. I absolutely love the way she expresses things and the ideas she delves into.

Moreover, she provided me with valuable insights into the identity conflicts that my immigrant husband experiences.

Her work has given me a deeper understanding of not only her as an author but also of the complex issues that many immigrants face in a new country.

I look forward to reading more of her work and learning even more from her.

Overall, this Q&A was a great read for me and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in Ms. Alvarez and her writing.

This thoughtful and illuminating collection of essays by the self-described “Vermont Writer from the Dominican Republic” is truly a remarkable work.

It is divided into two distinct groups. The first, “Customs,” takes the readers on a journey through the author's memories of growing up in the Dominican Republic during the last years of the Trujillo dictatorship. It vividly描绘s the hardships and challenges her family faced, as well as their eventual escape to New York.

Here, she further explores the difficulties of assimilating into a foreign Anglo culture that was not always welcoming.

The second part, “Declarations,” is a collection of her profound thoughts on writing. She delves into the process of how she transforms her personal experiences and rich imaginings into beautiful poems, engaging novels, and thought-provoking essays.

One particular piece, “Goodbye, Ms. Chips,” stands out as it delves into her difficult choice between the vocations of writer and teacher. This collection offers a unique and captivating perspective on the author's life and her creative process.

She has this remarkable charm that makes me want to write.

Every time I think of her, a flood of inspiration pours in, compelling me to tell my stories.

I am completely captivated by her tone. It is so calm and restrained, yet there is a hint of loss in every sentence.

It's as if she is carrying a hidden burden, a secret sadness that she reveals only through her words.

This unique combination of qualities makes her words truly enchanting.

They draw me in, making me want to explore the depths of her emotions and understand the stories behind her expressions.

With her as my muse, I feel like I can create something truly beautiful and meaningful.

I am eager to put pen to paper and let my thoughts flow, inspired by her presence and her voice.

She is the driving force behind my desire to write, and I am grateful for the inspiration she provides.

One of the shortest essays in this collection was my absolute favorite.

In it, she courageously confronts the problem of her being in between. As a Dominican American author, she finds herself not fully welcome in either place.

She is in a liminal space, straddling two cultures and yet not entirely belonging to either.

The quote within the blockquote, "I'm making a country that's not on the map, and that's why I'm trying to put it down on paper," is both powerful and poignant.

It speaks to her sense of displacement and her determination to create a space for herself and her experiences.

Through her writing, she is attempting to give form and substance to this intangible "country" that exists within her.

It is a beautiful and moving exploration of identity, belonging, and the power of words to shape our reality.

Her essay serves as a reminder that we all have our own unique stories to tell, and that sometimes, the most profound insights can be found in the shortest of works.

Even though there were a few essays here that fell flat for me, and even though it gets to me the way Alvarez (in my opinion) tends to downplay certain privileges she's had, this was an engaging collection for me.

My favorites were the ones that were about Alvarez realizing she wanted to write and having to figure out what that meant for her life. It was truly fascinating to follow her journey of self-discovery in the realm of writing.

"Family Matters," which is about being a writer who comes from a big, close-knit family and the conflicts between those two things, was easily the highlight for me. The way she described the challenges and joys of balancing her writing career with her family obligations was both relatable and touching.

Overall, despite its flaws, this collection offers valuable insights into Alvarez's life and her writing process. It makes me eager to read more of her work and see how she continues to grow as a writer.

I can't claim that I read every single word of each and every essay in this book. However, I truly did appreciate Alvarez's straightforward and conversational style. It provided me with some valuable insights into her writing process, as well as her own personal journey as an immigrant and a Dominican American woman. She constantly feels eternally displaced, both in her homeland and in her new home.

My most significant complaint regarding these essays is that they gave the impression of being a bit repetitive. This is likely because they were gathered from various sources and written for different purposes. But at times, they had to cover the same ground in order to make their point. Perhaps if I hadn't attempted to read the book straight through, I wouldn't have noticed this as much.

Nonetheless, I did come across some interesting tidbits that I plan to utilize in order to put her work into a conversation with that of Junot Diaz. I believe this will lead to a more in-depth exploration and understanding of their respective works and the themes they explore.

I checked this book out of the sem library.

As I was flipping through the pages, I happened to land on a page that said ‘Vermont’. That single word was all I needed to pique my interest.

I decided to only read the Vermont essay in the book. However, I have to return it soon.

From just reading this one essay, I have the impression that the author seems like the kindest person on earth.

The way the author described Vermont was so vivid and full of love. It made me feel as if I was actually there, experiencing the beauty and charm of the place.

I can't wait to explore more of the author's works and see if they all have the same kind of warmth and kindness.

Even though I only had a brief encounter with this book and the author's essay, it has left a lasting impression on me.

I'm grateful to have found this gem in the sem library.

I read this for a Single Author graduate level English course and really enjoyed it.

As with most of Alvarez's work, a deep understanding of the Trujillo regime and Dominican Republic history is essential to truly appreciate her writing.

I had the opportunity to read this collection of essays prior to delving into her novel, "How the Garcia Girls Lost their Accents."

This sequence proved to be beneficial as it provided me with a solid foundation to better comprehend the intricate historical details embedded within her fictional narrative.

The essays offered valuable insights into the social, political, and cultural context of the Dominican Republic during that time period.

They helped me to grasp the significance of the events and experiences that Alvarez portrays in her novel, enhancing my overall reading experience.

By familiarizing myself with the historical background, I was able to connect more deeply with the characters and their struggles, and gain a greater appreciation for Alvarez's masterful storytelling.

Overall, this collection of essays was a valuable addition to my study of Alvarez's work and a great way to prepare for reading her novel.
